you forgot to mention CSP is the successor to RETAS, made by the same company. RETAS is what the anime industry used up until CSP came out

As someone who's been using Toon Boom Harmony Essentials for years, it's important to note too that the different version are VASTLY different in what they offer (you can see the differences on their website). Essentials, the cheapest of the versions, does not offer any of the textured brushes, only the basic round ones, tilted and no pen-pressure ones. Pencil brush does not have pen pressure at all. It has a restricted dimension setting and won't go bigger than 2048x1556. Essentials does not have node view. It does not have the X-sheet. There are way more differences than the ones I've written above, but those are the ones that have caused issues for me personally when doing my job. I've been meaning to upgrade for years, but it's so expensive. *edit: i know this was mentioned in the video. just wanted to underline that even as a freelancer that's been working on professional things the other options are still too expensive for me, which is why I use Essentials still. When I can't use Essentials, I use clip studio paint to animate in.

@@julianc691 As the person you have asked didn't respond, as a 2D/3D Animation student who recently graduated, I can tell you my experience and opinion after trying both. The premium Toon Boom Harmony version might be one of the best options, but it's too expensive, so in the end it all depends on different factors. Instead of Mac it would be better to use Windows as you have more animation software options that might be good to use without them being too expensive (Mac user here talking form experience. I needed to try and get Windows bc of the Mac software limitations while studying), but for Mac, Clip Studio Paint is probably the safest option(also Toon Boom Harmony premium if you have the money to afford it but as a student I wouldn't go straight to it and try other less expensive options). There's also Krita and OpenToonz as animation softwares and I believe they are free (I haven't try it yet but a classmate used it and said it was pretty similar to toon boom in the way it works) Toon boom Harmony is a really intuitive program, but it's too expensive, the cheapest option isn't that good (you don't have the pen pressure so your lines have a variety depending on how you draw so it ends up more "rough" looking, and a lot of other things as the one who commented before said, it has a lot of downsides) and for a student the other options aren't quite affordable. I would say that you do the trial version of each program and see which feels better for you first. Clip Studio isn't as intuitive but a student can afford it, the end result might end up more clean (in case you are used to do a lot of layers for colors, details, shadows and lights, Clip Studio is actually better than Toon Boom in that case as in toon boom you only have one color layer(which you can cheat by doing a copy of the frames' timing and do only shadows in another timeline, yes, but it's not as comfortable, at least for me) also you have the pen pressure in almost any brush you might want to use so for lineart I find it better) and you have actually a lot more brushes and options, as the users also make brushes, and once you get used to it, it's actually pretty good. For example in my case I ended up using Clip Studio Paint more for lineart, color and the end result(without the effects and stuff that it's done one Premiere and After Effects) bc it was more confortable to me, while to make the base movement( key frames, in-betweens, and etc) I found it easier to use Toon Boom Harmony (the cheap version bc I cannot afford the premium ones and bc in class we used Toon Boom Harmony premium, I had to get at least the cheapest one to do the assignments or else I would have to spend all the day in class and try to get free seats...), so I usually do my roughs in Toon Boom, and clean it up in Clip Studio. Also for backgrounds you can "cheat" a bit in Clip Studio thanks to the 3D assets but you can do that too in Toon Boom by Exporting a 3D camera from a 3d programs, let it be blender, Maya or 3D max, but if you don't want to learn a lot of programs, just go for Clip Studio, it's a pretty complete program and has other utilities too aside from Animation.

Thank you for talking about the payment types up front. I absolutely despise subscription-based software. Unless a company has to maintain servers or other infrastructure for the product to operate in some fundamentally required way (not just adding something to force it to need that), then subscription is all about cash grab and trying to screw people out of their money. At the lowest cost for TonBoom of $200/yr (inflation?), that translates to $2k over 10 years. And if you don't with to keep paying it, suddenly what? You can't do your work anymore? It seems cheap, but it's not. And the ONLY reason for that model is to get more money out of people. That said, you get a like and sub from me for letting me know this up front.

Yes, the Toon Boom Harmony Premium perpetual license is currently $2,292.00 USD. Or you can make an annual $1,044.00 payment (every year for the rest of your life! ... or at least however long you want to continue using Harmony) or $128.50 a month (for the rest of your life! ... or at least however long you want to keep using Harmony Premium). If you're going to use Harmony on an ongoing basis and you don't work for a big animation studio who is paying for the Harmony license, it is very expensive. $128.50 a month subscription fee for 1 year = $1,542.00 .

One thing that destroys me about CSP is how often files get corrupted and sometimes make files vanish. When I try to use a backup version of the file, most of my progress is gone so if I were to animate with it, I’d assume most of my animations would just flip me the bird

"Toonboom harmony is the leading animation software for frame by frame and puppet rigging animation" Live2D cubism: "Am I a joke to you?" lol Also, CSP's biggest feature that sets it apart isn't the price. That's great too, but the biggest thing that sets it apart is without question it's stability. People really forget how terribad alternatives are by comparison.

What I wanna know is... why there's no character creator program or addon for any of these 2D animation programs? It doesn't make any sense why any artist would manually create characters in Photoshop over and over again. Something like Reallusion's Character Creator but for 2D would be awesome. Let the software generate a 360 rig with all the limbs, fists, facial expressions, etc.

Toon boom is the best. It's specifically designed for 2D animation and as someone who has experience with it. It's definitely worth learning especially for jobs. However, you have to think more on a financial mindset and what you are going for. Toon Boom is expensive. And if your only goal is to learn frame by frame animation, I would get a cheaper alternative.

@@jeanandre4023 I agree. The video lists also the price point, but if I'm not mistaken Harmony is more expensive than Moho and Moho if price is a topic, would be more comparable to Clip Studio. Also for animation it seems to me Moho and Harmony are made for, while clip studio tries to be more of a jack of all trades and master of only few, and those few are not animation tools.
