As I mentioned in the video there are many different methods to index a lathe spindle, each with its own pro's and cons.
My favourite shop teacher covers one simple way of doing it, in typical YouTubalCain style here:
• SHOP TIPS #178 Larger ... (Thank you Marc Banks for the link)
Tom Walter shows his method using a spare gear: • Video
Yet another approach from Johnny Q90: • Simplest Dividing Syst...
The two professionally manufactured CNC indexers of which I am aware:
Divisionmaster: (Note: The original Divisionmaster is no longer in production, however a similar item can be found linked on this page: www.jeffree.co.uk/modelenginee... )
Sherline CNC Rotary Table Indexer: amzn.to/2FJXmfv
No doubt there are other commercial variants out there, these are just the two that I have researched, and of course I ended up purchasing one of them.
There are also a few home brew versions out there, so be sure to let me know what else is available in the comments below.

Hey Folks, please enjoy TGT#2, all about that fancy digital indexer!
That final cut was magical.
My favorite part of this whole series is whenever Chris uses a tool with a motor, I just imagine the ancient equivalent is a very very tired assistant/apprentice spinning hand cranks and gears to run the lathe.

Kinda ironic given what the device is for!
Hearing Chris list off the parts and their functions, reminded me waaay too much of the classic 'Rockwell Retro Encabulator' video.

Hard to believe there was a time where we didn’t see any videos from you for over 2 years. Can’t think of a KZread experience without interesting videos like these.

I've always loved your narrated, somewhat instructive or descriptive videos. It's a real treat when you're able to release one of these. Thanks as always for sharing your work. 🙂

Very Clever! “Runout” the bane of our existence. Thanks
Thanks Chris. Keep these short tool videos coming. I'm sure they'll be popular and appreciated.

LMAO! Listening to Chris explain this amazing set up reminds me of hearing Alan Millyard explain how he saws engines into pieces ( with a plain old hacksaw ) and then engineers them into insane multi cylinder masterpieces! If any of the fans of Clickspring are unfamiliar with Mr.Millyard, this is high praise!
Chris, this is a crazy amount of work just to get out that runout error... fabulous job!
I also love freeing up brain to make other mistakes!
This is why Chris is so frikking amazing. 6 minutes that I would love to see expanded out.
I would love to see how you have your cutter mounted to your lathe. Also, a little more info on what lathe you are using and why you chose it instead of something else. Thanks for the videos, they are all informative and enjoyable.
I feel like my interest in your channel and similar makers has wormed its way into my art. I’m in my freshman level sculpture class and have recently become obsessed with adding moving elements with gear mechanisms. It’s so fun! I know it’s not the same of course but I can really see the appeal, because seeing my little “machines” come to life is quite the feeling.

Check out the artist David C. Roy! Wired did a video about his work on here and it's so cool. He makes kinetic mechanical wood sculptures that are amazing to watch in motion!
I love this series so much. I’d love to see how you store and organize your hand files, hand tools, and miscellaneous measurement equipment! 🤍
Yay! Also, seeing that manual crank on the spindle of that stepper made me gasp and think "back EMF protection must be heavenly good nowadays!"
So neat! Never thought to check the runout at the back of my lathe - but now I'm curious. I think I would have been quite inclined to try fixing the runout rather than adapt to it.
While I am in awe of your ability to hunt down and eliminate errors such as the unexpected runout on the rear end of your lathe, what I find even more impressive is the near anticeptic conditions. I couldn’t say for certain that my kitchen is as clean as your shop. Please explain this sorcery! How do you keep everything so spotless? I didn’t notice a vacuum cleaner in the introductory video to this series, but I must assume there is one involved. You must spend at least as much time with whisks and rags as you do working the fabulous pieces seen in your vids.
Love the pitch forks. Time to come up with a fresh music box project. Don't think I've seen you cover something like that before.
As someone who only heard "I do black magic" I love your videos and thank you for showing solutions to what I'm sure are complex problems so as many people can attempt your dark arts.

Presumably no chickens are harmed during or for the making of these videos ;) Magic it may be, but not of the black kind.
If Clickspring were a band, the indexer would definitely be their favorite instrument.
This is my favorite type of ASMR video. Relaxing, informative, intriguing.
So satisfying seeing that last cut make the gear perfect. I am afraid to even try cutting a gear yet. You videos are a great encouragement to me to try new stuff.
I purchased a Sherline lathe in no small part due to your videos. I would greatly appreciate a more in depth look at your Sherline lathe.
Thanks for filming, and don't stop!
I for one would love to see the tool post rotary cutter you're using to make the teeth.
Wooooo! More clickspring and more tools! What a good afternoon!
Thanks for the in-depth, Chris. There’s more to the setup than I was aware of when your Division Master first appeared, back at the Wilding Clock. 👍
You are in deed a Madmad of a mashinist for trying to make the excetric lathe addapter for your cnc. I know your chanel since u startet youre clockwork videos and i just love every single video, keep up the good work. Greetings, an austrian Mashinist.
The Happiest Words in my Life: G'day Chris here and welcome back to Clickspring The Saddest Words in my Life: Thanks for watching! I'll see ya later!
Soooo...What is the sawblade method of indexing? Thank you for all you do, I can't get enough!
The idea of a peice of wood as a dividing plate is excellent idea for a quick and nasty setup I think I might have to steal that idea
That final pass when you don’t see it perfectly line up… tears
It’s crazy to me that adding a free moving joint acts to remove error.

Yeah I thought that was pretty cool
That run out was both surprising and alarming to me as i would one day like to purchase a tabletop lathe. And your fixes for both were inspired. I would have torn the machine apart a dozen times trying to fix the error.
Very useful tool! And the "successor" of the Divisionmaster has a very attractive price, well worth looking.
Often wondered about this set-up. Very impressed and it's way more sophisticated than my very basic use of a 76 tooth old gear. :)

Chris, seeing all your amazing work, that you are able to accomplish in your tiny shop, is more than an incentive to make the best out of my own tiny shop!
This is just good video! Fun to watch. Presentation is always enjoyable. Thanks
Nice. I really like to see the whole setup with the horizontal milling attachment.
Gday Chris, im in the middle of cutting 2 gears now, a 14t and 56t 2.5 module, well as luck would have it I got to the last tooth on the 14t gear and realised I must of miss counted somewhere and screwed up, the worst part is the gear is in the middle of a 200mm long shaft, 40mm diameter gear and 18mm shaft either side, new blank make now and try again tomorrow, frustrating but a good learning curve to not to loose consultation, I’d love a setup like your now,😂 great video mate, Cheers
Nice work. I need to measure the run out on my lathe as well. Taking a look at that indexer too. Thanks.
Okay now do the rest of your shop, all of the things you have learned along the way, and everything else! Lol thanks Chris you are awesome!
Chris, thanks for TGT#2, helped a lot!
Ohh man, another video that makes me think I need a lathe, as well as that awesome indexer. Great video. Really enjoying the regular uploads, and the great videos
Beautifully done!
As always excellent video. Always learn something from your videos
That cnc indexer is a great addition to your tooling Chris and it will reduce mistakes.
These tool videos are great. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week 😎
Thanks for yet another great video!
Great stuff Chris, thanks for sharing.
Поздравляю,удачное приобретение. Ждём новых шедевров от вас.
Brilliant! I may try to make something like this for my lathe eventually.
Slick setup, like how you dealt with the runout. I'd probably go on a gear making binge with one of those lol
Great now I have more questions than before watching. Hahaha
Good lord you should be a machinist instructor! Seriously!!! I have learned an incredible amount just watching your videos.
Thank you so much truly, Ive been trying to find a good way to cut gears and this is really going to help especially seeing as the complete controller kit is only 150!!
Nice video as always. Greetings from France
beautiful work!

damn I wish you'd make these more frequently
The money one pays for a Sherline Lathe there should be zero run out. It just goes to show dearer is not always better.

He wasn't using his sherline lathe, he was using his Chinese import lathe---The big red one. Sherlines are a bit expensive, but considering the quality, it's actually very reasonable, especially if you buy used. I got my mill and lathe both, with accessories, for $500usd. Buy the same thing new and it's about $3k. Anyway I think the quality is great for what I paid lol
beautiful
This is magic
Amazing 😍
Very interesting
Very cool.
Two eccentric adapters and a paper shim. Just to overcome that your equipment wasn't built by someone as meticulous as you. I'm sure you have considered in place grinding the ID of your spindle?
is there a brake that maintains the position against cutting forces?
I noticed 1 of the clickspring patrons is Charles frodsham and co. Frodsham clocks ⏰ are famous
These workshop tours are going to be some of my favorite videos. Beyond amazing what can be done in such a small space. But i will admit i would like to know what you suck at. Just to make myself feel a bit better lol. Joking of course. What you accomplish is what is possible if people turned off their devices and actually focused on doing something better in life. Time to wipe
Where do you get the gear cutters for making the watch parts? I can’t find ones small enough anywhere
I think you deserve to get yourself a nice schaublin lathe.
Could something like this be connected to a mill to make helical gears?
Yay
Я думаю можно было сделать привод на шпиндель зубчатым ремнем, тогда было бы не критично биение. Так же можно шаговый мотор присоединять к шпинделю электромагнитной муфтой, чтобы все было закреплено стационарно.
Hello Chris, I have a question, what is your daily work? :-) Greetings from Germany
Cool
What Mill do you use?
Sherline in Vista, CA ehh?? That's 10 mins from me, whaddya know.
If you can't measure any error then it's time to use these parts to make a new micrometer. Precision intensifies. 😉
Wooohoo
How much does a setup like this cost?
Down to a few hundredths of a millimeter of runout -- but how much is that in thousandths of an inch?
Chris I love you and all, but what the hell is a newton-centimeter 😂 that’s a new one! Fun fact, centimeters are in fact not a true metric unit.
Wow..there are arms in there... all this time I thought Chris was just a pair of talking hands
