I realize this video was over 5 years ago but thank you for the honest review. I had just purchase the Grizzly 8” jointer with the fixed bed a couple months ago but hadn’t taken out of the crate yet due to pneumonia hitting me bad. I feel encouraged in its future use from your review of your Grizzly jointer. I too have tired of buying upgrades and now buy the one that I really want.

One thought on the position of your fence - what we used to do at college was to leave the fence as far back as possible and use that portion of the blades solely for edge jointing. With practice, you don't actually need to use the fence for planing a face and can therefore spread the wear across the rest of the blades. I've also found that moving a fence can make it slightly out of square on some machines. ;-)

I suppose one of the huge advantages of the spiral cutter head is that you don't need to spread the ware in the same way as I have to on my Axminster Tools 250mm planner / Thicknesses or you'd call it a jointer / Thicknesses planner combo as it has traditional 3 blade set up. got it last year and they have now bought out a spiral head cutter, gutted bout that. Anyhow keep up the great work, love your work!

We have all purchased tools at a lower price point. I know you are value based on your decisions but would like even more. For example, I needed an impact driver and my favorite cordless is 20v Dewalt. The impact driver was $120 with no batteries. However, Home Depot had the 18v drill, impact and 2 batteries for $99. For the amount of use it made sense, to me, to go with the Ryobi. Great video!

Hey Jay, thanks for the tool feedback. I'm considering buying the Grizzly G0690 table saw and watched one of your videos the other day where you talked about it verses the SawStop. It was exactly what I needed to know. The SawStop is my ultimate wish list saw, but not my favorite price. I should be purchasing a G0690 in the very near future.

Great tool talk Jay! I have the same jointer (2 years now), and it's been a great machine. Like you, I tend not to move the fence because of what you mentioned. I have put 100,s of bd ft through it, and the blades are still as sharp as when I got it. Maybe in a few years I might have to spin them.

+GuysWoodshop that's great to hear about the blades. I gummed mine up really bad with a long run of yellow pine but a couple q-tips and mineral spirits cleaned them up real quick. Cut like new after that.

+Jay Bates 2 In a production environment having to re-square the fence every time would be completely unacceptable. Considering the difference in the cost of the machine, though, it's a very small price to pay in a hobby shop. Wax any bare metal surfaces with paste wax, it will make your wood slide easier, prevent gumming up, and prevent rust too.

I used to have the 6" non spiral version of that jointer. The fence issue was the same with mine so I never moved it. It was hard to get the fence squared up on mine in general as it was very finicky. I've upgraded since and would probably not buy the jointer again but mostly because of the size I had. Good talk though, I look forward to more videos like this. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the cyclone.

I've operated the same jointer for several years now. Don't have the issue you and others have with the fence coming out of plumb when moving it. I've had problems with the sheave on the motor moving out on the shaft; the vibration at low rpm alerts you; red thread lock seems to extend "MTBF". Thought about drilling a hole in the end of the shaft to mount a keeper. As you know, it's impossible to lay a straight bar across the two sheaves w/o dismantling the damn thing, so I can only suspect the drive-to-head alignment is off a degree or two. I needed to devise a way to block the motor carriage to properly tension the belt. I also note the significant positive effect the DC has on operation. Note to Stew ... I assembled it myself ... if you don't have an engine lift or a 'gantry', you'll need to crib the thing fore-and-aft a few times before you can slip the base under it. I wish Grizzly [who is not my favorite supplier] could incorporate a damper on the foot release ... I have to hold onto the infeed table so it won't slam down. Would I buy it again? Hmmmmm.

Thanks Jay. Since Grizzly is running this on sale AND free shipping I have one coming. This was a hard choice as I also got the G0454Z Planner instead of the 12" Jointer/Planer combo unit. Your review and the fact that since I have two units instead of 1 made up my mind. Less re-setting up from moving beds around on the single unit. A few more $$ for 2, but I think in the long run a better choice. Now, how do I move that boxed 1/2 ton Planer into the shop, oh my aching back.

Jay, If you decide your next video on public opinion, I would vote for your grizzly band saw, I am very interested in your thoughts and experience after purchase, I recently went for a Porter Cable 14", however, I'm not quite convinced simply due to the missing fence, and the cost to add an aftermarket one, thank you for sharing your experiences, could not agree more with not buying "upgradeable" versions of tools.

Unless I come up on a super good deal for a less ideal tool, I always save for the best that I need. Like, I would love to get a saw stop, but I can't justify the price tag when I can buy a powermatic in the same size range used from a reseller in my area for 1/3 the cost. Just waiting on them to get in an 8 or 10 inch PM or grizzly jointer I can buy for around $800.

Hey Jay, I'm about to receive this jointer and Ive seen some setup videos on it here on youtube. I'm curious to know how you managed to lift and place the jointer on the stand? My understanding is its several hundred pounds. Ive seen guys use motor lifts and even tractors to lift it and place it on the stand, neither of which I currently have. Thanks in advance for your help.

I had it placed in the back of my truck. From there I wiggled the top to rest on sawhorses. Then I can pick up one side at a time and add a block to elevate the top on the sawhorses, slide the base in from below, then remove each block one at a time back and forth to place the top on the stand.

Hey Jay, thanks for the review. I actually just purchased the same jointer and am currently working through setting up the infeed/outfeed tables. I plan to do a video on my channel as well once it's setup and I've had a chance to use it. I've noted similar complaints, but overall glad you would purchase it again as that makes me feel better about my purchase. I also could not justify the more expensive brands as this one seemed to fit the bill and with the spiral head and massive infeed support it should last me forever. I would be interested to know and see how much flutter you've seen in the drive belt. I thought mine had quite a bit, but Matt Cremona looked at his and noted a little more on his so I'm not sure if it's cause for concern. Thanks for the review.

Your weld joint is actually stronger than the metal itself, kinda like the glue is stronger than the wood. If you could get to the back of the brace you could epoxy some 3/16 flat stock that would take most of the "flex" out.

Great review, did you use one with the standard blade cutters before this one? I'm curious of the difference in cut and life of the cutters.

Very informative video and great timing since I'll be in the market for a jointer soon. Will this be a gateway to doing sponsored or promoted Tool Talks? I know you say that you don't do typical tool reviews but was just curious.

+Michael Gomez I have no clue what the future has in store for this series in regards to other companies. But I have a couple tools of mine scheduled in future videos that were sent to me. I will always make it clear if I paid for a tool or not and will refuse to talk about any tool in a way that doesn't reflect my honest opinion.

I definitely agree with you in getting good stuff (I'm about to buy an $8500 CNC which sucks because I already have a $3000 CNC). Having said that, a 12" jointer is no joke. You have to be really serious about woodworking to get a 12" jointer. I would love to get one but personally don't have the space.

Nice review/non-review Jay. I hate reviews that spend most of the time regurgitating machine specs that can be easily found online. Love your no-nonsense approach. I bought the same machine roughly 5 months ago and I've had several issues - some have been resolved and others are on-going. I can get into details if others want but right now I have a question for you, Jay. How "smooth" does your jointer run? Mine just doesn't seem to be right. No matter how much I adjust the belt (tight, loose, or anywhere in the middle), or make sure the pulleys are aligned and square, this machine has (IMO), too much vibration. The original belt was fairly tweaked when I got it so I had it replaced. No help. The motor pulley set screws were loose as was the cutter head pulley bolt. Tightened those and still no help. Running the motor only without the belt installed indicates a vibration-free motor. Guess it could be the cutter head assembly. To their credit, Grizzly has been great at resolving issues but I'm about to ask for another machine. Not sure how that will go over after 5 months but I've spent more time problem solving than squaring up stock. Thanks for all you do ...

+woodshock Does it affect performance of the machine or just the noise it generates when its vibrating?

  • @woodshock8832

    @woodshock8832

+David Blehar Well, no I don't think it affects the performance so much (I can get my lumber square and all), but there's just too much vibration for my liking. Not sure how that will affect things long term but it can't be good. Someone mentioned Matt Cremona commenting about his Grizzly jointer has "belt flutter". Mine definitely can be described the same way which may contribute to the vibration but I've already had the belt replaced once. Like you Jay, this was my very first jointer purchase. I don't have a point of reference which is why I was asking you about vibration. The closest comparison I have is my Rigid 4512 table saw and it runs perfectly smooth. Even the Rigid bandsaw that I paid $75 for on Craigslist runs vibration free after performing a few mods. I contacted Grizzly and after all the issues I've had they offered to repair or replace the jointer (the tech emphasized they will try to repair first). Great, but that means I have to crate it up for shipping which would be a pain. Still have the box the base came in but I'd have to build a crate for the bed and other parts. Or, he said I could just leave it assembled and ship in one container. Not sure which way to go. I don't have much (any) experience building crates for large machinery - anyone have suggestions? Please know I'm not bashing Grizzly - I really want to love this machine. The other issues I can live with but not sure about this vibration. If that's just the nature of the beast, I guess I can learn to live with that as well - otherwise, back it goes. I'd just hate to go to the trouble of sending it back and get the same result in return. What would you guys do? Jay?

+woodshock I failed to mention I have the same machine, just got it a few weeks ago actually. I have recently had to replace a 12 inch combination machine with 2 separate machines (long story). In comparison to that machine in jointer mode, this is a bit louder, has a bit of a "jump" when it first fires up that the Jet didn't have. I don't recall the jet having any notable vibration, but didn't think much of it. The grizzly vibrates a bit (certainly more than my table saw) but I'll say this: the cut quality out of grizzly's spiral head runs circles around the spiral head on the Jet combo machine. I wonder if the vibration you have really is out of the ordinary. I'd be curious to see/hear what yours is like compared to mine. I'll take some video of it if you're interested. Maybe try out the old nickel test. Just thinking that you'll be in a world of disappointment if you go through all the trouble packing up the old machine and getting a new one only to find its exactly the same. If its got a bit of vibration but it gives the same quality results I'm experiencing, I'd forget about it.

+David Blehar Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'd definitely be interested in seeing a a video of your machine. I can do the same. Maybe also get some footage of the running belt. This will at least give us some frame of reference. I'm perfectly happy with the cut quality but the ("normal" or excessive) vibration combined with the other issues I've had leave me with a bit of buyers remorse. I've had the belt replaced, the fence replaced TWICE (original had a significant twist - 1st replacement was beat to hell due to poor packaging - third was a keeper). The threaded, wedge shaped clamp that pulls against the locking collar to lock the fence in place was split preventing the fence from staying in place. (also looked like someone took a grinder to it) However, even with a new threaded clamp, the fence will fall out of 90º due to the weight of the fence. (really a poor design, IMO). I've fixed that with a makeshift workaround but not sure how long it will last. The final issue is the long-handled, out feed adjustment lever won't fully tighten up and has a moderate amount of play in it. The nut seems to be stripped or something and it's inaccessible without removing the bed from the base. Really not a big deal since the out feed table height is rarely adjusted but still... On the plus side, Grizzly does seem to care about the customer.

Hey Jay, I see Grizzly has some combo jointer/planers I'm considering (to just use the jointer functionality), since it gets you a wider jointer bed for less money - they have a combo 10" for $1225. www.grizzly.com/products/10-Jointer-Planer-Combo/G0675 Once you get into the 12" you're talking $2500 to $2800 and may as well get a dedicated jointer. What do you think about the 10" combo unit above? Either that or I may just get a dedicated 8" model like you did... Just subscribed...
