It’s about the hypocrisy of a “fan”, who is the ultimate consumer, criticizing the mainstream success. “I met a boy wearing Vans, 501s and a Dope Beastie T, nipple rings new tattoos....And in between sips of Coke he told me that he thought we were selling out.” Great song and dope album. In my fav top 5 best albums of all time for sure. That album opened my mind to so many sounds. Check out 46 & 2

If you listen carefully during that bass solo at about 2.5 mins, you can hear an excerpt of comedian Bill Hicks; "consume, be fruitful and multiply". The entire album is mostly a tribute to him, as he had passed away less than three years prior to its release (aged 32, pancreatic cancer), and had become associates with Maynard.

Correct interpretation once again ! Many artists get accused of "selling out" as soon as they get some commercial success, especially bands that labor in obscurity with a rabid cult following for many years before then. My favorite quote about the phenomenon was about Metallica getting mainstream success: "People tell us we sold out, and I say, damn right. We sold out every seat at every show at every venue we played." Can you picture yourself in a sold-out Chesapeake Arena (home of the OKC Thunder), screaming along with 40,000 other people FUCK YOU, BUDDY FUCK YOU, BUDDY FUCK YOU, BUDDY FUCK YOU, BUDDY I can, I was, I did. If you ever get a chance to see Tool live, go for it immediately. They're the only band I've seen with a better stage show than Pink Floyd

I'm glad you enjoyed this song. It's an old favorite of mine. Early TOOL is the best. I'm going to ask again that you listen to Tori Amos. I sent you a long ass message on Instagram, so I'm not going to do that again, but I will say that Maynard sang with Tori at her RAINN benefit concert in the late 90s on her song Muhammed, My Friend, and it's really lovely. They harmonize together beautifully. Tori says at the beginning that she occasionally calls up Maynard to sing her lullabies when she can't sleep. Can you imagine?

@@Skunz Tool tend to make their lyrics deeper than expected, so when they go straightforward with their lyrics is entirely possible that someone tries to read more than what is being said. TL:DR Some mfers tend to overthink their lyrics, that's why even a song so direct can have its message misunderstood

There was a KISS tribute album where Maynard, Tom Morello, Brad Wilk, and Billy Gould formed Shandi's Addiction and did a cover of Dr. Love that fucking slaps. I have a feeling you'd love it. Yeah, you, reading this comment!

You need to check out the title song from this album called Aenima. It’s another song where he is just sick of everyone’s bullshit. In that one he basically calls out all of Hollywood/LA. Considering where your from I think you will like it 😂

to be fair...the Glenn Miller Orchestra is still a fun show. tO0L's 10,000 days tour was better, though....but mushrooms were ingested for that one...so, it's not fair to compare.

This is just one song. I’d say listen to a few songs form a band before you judge. Especially since this song is totally tongue and cheek and more of a “fun” “messing around” type song from them. Try listening to Pneuma and tell me you have the same opinion.
