Have you ever looked at some of the higher level people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and wondered if you could get to that point with your competition abilities?
This is the question from our friend George who is new to BJJ and wants to become a high level BJJ competitor. But his worry is that he is too old. He's 18.
In this video I share the fact that I think it's more than possible for him to become high level in Brazilian Jiujitsu if he goes after it. But ultimately what I think doesn't matter.
What matters is that George takes action towards what he wants. That's the only way he will find out if he can truly be a good Brazilian Jiujitsu competitor.
I also touch on the mental block that seems to be coming with our friend.
If you're interested in being a BJJ competitor or have a dream that you're chasing. I hope this video is useful to you.
Thanks for watching!

The thing I really like about Jiu jitsu is that you can chase your dreams and not get brain damage in the process like in other martial arts such as MMA or Boxing...

This is awesome. I'm 33 and started training about 15 years ago. I trained in the military and a little extra for the first 5 years, took the next two years super competitive, competing every other month and then on and off for the next 3. I haven't been able to train properly for the last 5. I just got back on the mat and I have that hunger back. So at 33 I'm getting back into jiu jitsu/kickboxing at a moderate level. It's definitely possible

18... man you are still a baby. Some of the fastest black belts in bjj got it in 3 years. Men's physical fitness peaks at 30, you've got 12 years to make something happen... that's a long ass time.

@its me google it. These are the people that log it like a full time job. They are getting 40 hours a week of Jiu jitsu. You go 4 times a week... So that's what 4-6 hours a week... See how doing it ten times as much gets a belt ten times faster?

Joel Reed The only person to get their black belt in 3 years that I know if Geo Martinez... He's a Eddie Bravo 10th Planet Black Belt. But he and his brother started as breakdancers with a high level of body control and mental learning skills. Bj Penn got his Black Belt in 5 years.. Really... You want to spend as much time as you can at a belt. Because once you get to Black... You are competing against guys who have been Black Belts longer than you have been training. Getting a belt quickly isn't all that great.

They say it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill (any skill). If I did bjj 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year, for 5 years, that would be 10,000 hours. If I do it 5 hours a week, 50 weeks per year, I'm looking at 40 years to get my 10,000 hours. Hours in the sport matters, not years (if you're barely putting any time towards it). You get the belt by putting the hours in. I'm not talking about any freebies. This guy from the video is talking about being a top competitor, he's going to have to put in 40 hours a week if he wants to be a top competitor.

There is No Perfect number of age to start Training Martial arts. The question ist how do you fill Up the Time? Do you train Smart without injuring yourself but still giving 110% every Session? You can definetely become High Level competitor even Starting mid twenties... The only Thing you have to Remember is that between 28-35 Years of age you have your highest Potential and after that your Regeneration will decline and learning new skills will be Harder... So Start now! You can still achieve everything If you want it Bad enough.

Hey chewie! I'm a blue belt and a really small guy (48kg and 1.58m), i always have many dificulties rolling with bigger and heavier guys (wich is 90% of my rolls, cuz most of the guys of my gym are +70kg) and i always end up at the bottom of them, im fast but i cant do many things when my opponent knows how to put his weight well on me and i need some space to move and make somthing work, so im often fighting from the bottom of a half guard or side control (even when the guy is a heavy white belt) and its been really hard to get out of this kind of situation... so do you have any tip to make me survive a little better against these giants?

Ok! I gotta question. I'm about to complete 35 and started practicing JJ for about 4 months now, being very consistent for about 1 and a half months (I'm totally aware that this is very little time in JJ... nonetheless...). Even though I LOVE to practice, one thing I'm noticing is that I don't really have that crazy drive to submit, tap my opponent and I think I'm not doing as good as I should, being smashed right and left... I get a bit frustrated and question myself if that lack of drive will affect my journey in a way that hinders me to the point of no evolution. Any advice or thoughts on that? Really appreciate it! Love your videos! Keep it up! May the force be with you! 😂

If it's any help I'm 1 and a half years into BJJ, I've felt the same way recently. There are guys at my gym who used to wrestle and even though I technically have more experience and knowledge they can usually out work me. One thing that helped me was going to my first tournament, it made me understand what it means to fight 100%. Since that tournament I'm able to force myself to go to a higher gear than before. I would say before and during tournaments is a good time to push yourself as hard as you can. Other than that I'm usually going 60%-90% depending on who I'm rolling with. Also one tip, even if you are in someones bottom half guard, side control or mount you can work your escapes and sweeps. Make sure to have one in mind, if you don't know, ask the person you're rolling with to show you one.

I wrestled for 14 years and one thing I have learned in my short time so far going to my BJJ gym is that I need to NOT go for things aggressively. Granted my Professor isn't putting me against other white belts, so every time I start pushing hard to find a sub, the higher belts find my mistakes. I was always more of a mid line wrestler though, when I first started I was much more of a defensive wrestler who caught people making mistakes and as time went on I learned to be more offensive. I think that taking this method in learning BJJ may benefit me, but it seems like a good path for those who are not extremely driven toward submissions. I finally started catching some of the blue belts in subs because instead of driving toward a submission I found an opening while rolling defensively.

I wish I started that young. When I was 22, I got hooked on Muay Thai and now, I'm a 34 year old white belt that is 8 months into training. I can only imagine what could have been if I started BJJ instead of Muay Thai 12 years ago.

I just started BJJ. I am 33. I am doing my first white belt tournament next month. I plan on giving the young bucks a run for their money. Start small. Train to compete. Then train to be the hurdle in front of you. Best at a local tournament? Then move up to larger tournaments? Sounds like black belt is a ways off for this guy... probably should just enjoy the ride!

18 too old? didn't Eddie Cummings not start competing at a higher level until the second half of his 20s? As he was working in Academia before then. it was his divorce and losing his job that motivated him to throw himself full on into jiu jitsu. Also my professor didn't get his black belt from roger gracie until later in life he's in his 40-50s, he competed recently and was beating guys half his age.
