As someone who had the original, this was a must for me. I really like how they have retained the original design and functionality. I don’t need blue tooth or MB6 even at this price point. Overall, very happy with the look and feel of this anniversary edition.

@@CasualWatchReviews Yes, I am a bit surprised. I think people are making comparisons with cheaper square models which I can understand to a point. However, I really like the recrystallized screw back case, gold accents (buttons, screen, keeper, LCD, etc), the nod to “Project Team Tough” as well as the made in Japan heritage. I think the changes are sympathetic and in keeping with what I was hoping for and I can certainly experience a touch of quality, albeit understated. Too many “upgrades” would have turned me off. Each to their own but overall I think the price point is reasonable (I paid retail £269) and I’m very happy to add this to my collection (apart from packaging!)

I'm 52 and I have the exact same story. I bought three. Two of them I will not touch, and I'll wear one. As a kid of the 1970's, to have this watch in 1983, I felt so cool... I had to have this watch.

Don’t knock it until you try it. It’s a great watch.

If you're really into the anniversary then fair enough but if you want the look of the original with modern features then the DW5610 is the way to go for a third of the price.

This is actually my daily driver and I love it! The sunburst LCD definitely makes the watch stand out. Practicality of a G-SHOCK, made in Japan quality, 1983 original style, and again, the amazing LCD. For me the 5000u is more functional but looks too boring for me.

The 5000u (JDM baby!) is my daily driver, but I did pick this beauty up for “dressier” occasions.

I wish this had Though Solar, Multi Band and Bluetooth but… I’m still rocking it and love it.

Does the sunburst lcd look in person the same as it appears at 0:14 in the video? I mean is that strange light/shadow pattern visible to the real eye?

I've got enough G-Shock's to officially qualify as a hoarder and this is by far in my top 3 favourite G's. I found the gold 'recrystalized' buckle and keeper massively ugly/tacky/goofy/uncongruent so replaced the keeper with a rubber piece robbed from a spare band I had lying around and replaced the buckle with the shiny gold buckle robbed from another watch (the DWE-5657RE that I put a regular silver coloured buckle on) so now the gold buckle matches the buttons on the 5040PG. Much much better than how it came from the factory. It's a great watch and well worth the price. Yeah yeah, heard all the mansplaining, you can get the 5000U for similar money and have more features but this isn't an either/or scenario, it's get both and enjoy them for what they are.

I’ve purchased the gold recrystallized version which I love mainly because of the positive display… it’s a breathtaking beast of a watch and I’m feeling the 80’s vibrations :) obviously this is merely my opinion

From a collector’s point of view, it’s a bargain. I fully restored an original 1983 version (3k value I think) and I keep it along with the 5030 and now the 5040 versions and they look awesome.

How do you find the legibility. The gold makes the LCD hard to read at a glance I felt.

I have still got my 1984 5200c and 1988 5600c both still going . I also have the 5030 and 5035 anniversary models, all good squares ,Premium models, but I use a 5600e that I've had since 1996 still going strong all these years on and only on battery number three! All G shocks are good, but you don't have to buy a premium square to get a long lasting watch! Just get the basic 5600e it's just as tough? It's in the Guinness book of records to prove it!

Anyone knows if a metal bezel face fit on it? 5600 won't fit. I tried. great review. very accurate. I got the watch.

I don’t know but I wouldn’t take a gamble if it was me, been burned with that before. Unless the aliexpress listing calls the model number out in the listing specifically, I wouldn’t risk it personally.

I bought a 40th anniversary Eric Haze full metal square. Both watch and box are thoughtfully designed pieces of art worth the price. This, not so much.

Watch boxes are ridiculous- stacks of them taking up space in my place. For pricey watches make ‘‘em small or useful travel cases, and sub 500 make from egg carton - A ok for me. Thanks for the vid

This is a tribute and anniversary edition, I think it offers great value for money. It's not the functionality this is made for, it's made precisely for a tribute to the grail GShock DW5000 and it does the job perfectly. That is how it must and should be. These five year releases, tributes with each their own personalities, are awesome! Real build quality like the originals is what I'm looking for, and the choice was between a GW5000 and this one, but this one was sold out. I got hold of a DW5735 and a DW5630 crystal. Same sunburst gold display and new square bezel. A good replacement if not quite right collecting object.

The gold "tang" or whatever it's called is garish. I'm fine with the buttons and buckle being gold but the tang being gold is too much. I do like the matte finish of the caseback. I've worn the GW5000u with its shiny caseback and it makes the case stick to my skin whenever there is even the tiniest amount of moisture (ie, some sweat). a GW5000u with a matte finish caseback and maybe different accents to spice it up a little (but not too much) would be perfect.

Mine came in yesterday and I had the same misgivings about the packaging.

Never owned a Gshock and this has been sold out for about 3 weeks on the Canadian site. It was available today and I jumped on it. Yes, it’s doesn’t come with all the features of the 5000u and it’s not the best value watch like the 5610. But is watch collecting really always about value? Because if you really want value, no need to have a watch as everyone owns a smart phone. Anyways, it’s limited edition (who knows how many actually produced) and I personally think it looks awesome (love the red like the original 5000c). I’m excited and can’t wait to get my hands on the 5040, first Gshock. I have my eyes set on the the metal 5000, but need to know if I can pull it off as it does wear big due to the 2nd inflexible link. Thanks for the video.

Yep, but those ones are also titanium and the case are machined to a much higher standard. They are pretty amazing in person.

I love that watch - I also go one. Funny thing, I build a custom 5 years ago to pay homage to the DW-1983 and it looks almost identical to this one. I'm just a bit bummed about the price - the 25th anniversary square was much cheaper but basically the same watch as this DW-5040PG.

This is why I hate greenwashing. It doesn't matter that the old packaging was perfectly recyclable, the packaging needs to appear as recyclable as well. The tin box wasn't good only for watches, you could store all kinds of dodads inside for years, if not decades. The new boxes will be thrown away immediately by most owners . The thing is that recycling paper and molding such boxes requires a fair amount of water and energy. Since they will fall apart immediately all that water and energy literally goes to waste.

G shock has gotten extremely cheap on their packaging. Nice watch awesome video!!

Since is not solar I wonder how long will the battery last.

I have read people having them last as long as 5 years on the odd occasion. Still can't beat the solar ones though.

Definitely not worth it in terms of objective functionality, but collectors buy subjectively and emotionally, which means these will sell out easily even at that price. I'm on the fence about it myself.

I wish they would make different versions of the GW5000U (ie, with different accents, colorways, etc.). A GW5000U with the red border would be the perfect modernized version of the original, IMO. Some folks like to say you can get that with the 5610, but c'mon the screw-on caseback is what really differentiates the premium versions from the everyday versions. All the bluetooth and other features that Casio has been releasing in the last five years for their square G-shocks are kind of silly, although I'm sure some people find them nice.

I just looked on their site, that is a misprint in their description. It doesn’t have solar and I’m sure it doesn’t have whatever the ‘flash’ alert thing is either. If it had solar it would say ‘tough solar’ on the watch.

I get it from a collectible standpoint, very little of what we do makes actual sense. But from a practicality and function standpoint it makes no sense at all. I have the JDM 5000U that I paid less for and is just as special. To the real collector I can see it, but for someone just wanting a cool square G-shock its a waste.

Hey! Good question. It’s actually a process of heating then cooling the metal to give the surface that pattern, I had explained it but I cut it predicting the inevitable comments from people who know more about metals telling me I explained it wrong 😂

For this price it needed Sapphire. 5610 still the better option.

I bought one. It's my new favourite. I've got about 30 g shock watches

The packaging I agree is awful, very cheap and nasty. The gold coated hw on the strap is a bit too blingy for me, the dial is really dim and dark unless you reflect it at a certain angle or go outside and it looks like someone dehydrated has taken a piss on it, and the case back is nice and dark but feels a bit ridiculous. Otherwise good.

I bought the 35th anniversary and sent it back. Now I bought the 40th anniversary and sent it back. Too much for too little. The GW-5000U is less imported from Japan, has more features, and is also a screw back. Pass.

People will buy it because they need every new piece released. But it's the same as the previous anniversary piece but way more pricey and it has a star in the side button. No tough solar and this new 'recrystalisation' steel process sounds like bs to me?!

I completely disagree. Nobody worries too much about every other brands doing the same thing (homages, revivals... You name it). Nowadays, I would say a digital G Shock is no less a piece of "history" than any mechanical watch. Either mechanical or quartz, a mouvement is a mouvement. This watch is meant to be owned by collectors, fans of the brand. Plus, this particular model is made in Japan. I guess the labor cost is not the same than in Thailand, without speaking about the materials used and the fabrication process.
