In this video we’re going to do a ballistics gel test and review of the following hunting ammunition fired from the following test rifle:
- 45-70 Government Winchester 300gr Jacketed Hollow Points
- Marlin 1895 Trapper chambered in 45-70 Government with a 16 inch barrel
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

For goodness sake, change your clickbait thumbnail and title! You ruined a perfectly good ammo test video, by titling it with some BS about some dangerous ammo we should be warned about, which is obviously far from reality. You are doing Winchester a disservice, tbh, with that title. Remove the words "Too dangerous", you knew that was false, and knowingly placed it there as clickbait. The thing is, it was a really good video, but the content did not match the title. Deception, to gain views from people who expected something else - that does not build trust. Edit: And I just had a quick scan through your other video thumbnails and titles - for most of them you've done the exact same clickbaity thumbnails and titles. Do I feel like watching any of them now? No, because I know the title and thumbnail probably has nothing to do with the content. Trust is gone. Something to think about. To end this is on a good note, I repeat: the actual video and ammo test was really good. And that leather stock ammo holder is absolutely beautiful!

I have used the same Winchester 300 grain load for years. Same bullet expansion from a Marlin 1895 with a 22" barrel. They even expand well past 100 yards on deer. None of the bullets ever exited a deer so they dumped all their energy on target. It's the best deer stopper I have ever used. Thanks for another great video.

Used these for several seasons on deer and they never really wowed me. I never lost a deer but I never put them down as quickly as one would think. All my deer were shot at very close ranges too. 60 yards might have been the longest shot. Maybe as distance increases performance may too. Not sure. I switched to 405 grain flat nose running at 1550 fps and they are very much a better close range deer stopper for me. I do think Winchester is still producing some great ammo though. Thanks for sharing.

People don’t realize that the 45-70 was a Rolling Block design but the had the Colt SAA with the 7 1/2 inch barrel. Though Custer had the Colt SAA he decided to leave the two Gatling guns behind, they shot the 45-70 and it could have changed what happened at the Little Bighorn battle. When the Rhodesia war broke out the AR could shoot the 450 Bushmaster. I was able to pick one of these up.

The various 300 grain hollow point . 45-70 bullets do offer a lot of expansion potential, but I do wonder if a flat nose soft point might give better penetration on hogs and bear while still working just fine on deer.

I used 350gr Hornady bullets loaded to near maximum for lever action rifles. Most factory loads are "watered down" because of all the old Trapdoor rifles that are still around. To get the most energy, it's best to handload. Also, the 300gr hollow points have about a .010" jacket thickness at the nose. The Hornady 350gr soft points are .020" thick at the nose. They are designed for deep penetration in large game. If you really want to get serious, use the 400gr Barnes bullets. They are .030" thick. They are also twice the price of the Hornadys.

Pretty standard for factory ammo to not achieve advertised velocity. Many years ago the difference was actually much greater than it is today though. My uncle went to the 45-70 for eastern woods deer/bear and never looked back. Part of that was the Marlin itself, simply an easy rifle to get along with.

If I were huting in a Strait wall only state or you hunt shorter ranges the 45-70 might be a good choice. For open rifle states it's just not a flat shooting cartridge. Even going old school the 30 06 will stomp the guts out of anything in the US with a lot flatter trajectory

Go back and check your load data. Hodgdon does not list data for IMR 4198 and that Hornady bullet. They only show AA-2015 powder with that bullet and the maximum load for a Marlin rifle is only going 2,069 fps. Hornady does show a max load of 48.7 grains of IMR-4198 moving 2,100 fps out of a 22” barrel. Citing bogus load data is stupid. If you actually load what you described it’s also dangerous.

What he also means is not only will the bullet kill you because of such a heavy bullet moving at a high velocity. But I think he also means that you cannot use this round in any 1873 trap door actions. This round will blow the gun up in your face and and seriously injure you or kill you. These are loaded way too hot for any trap door action rifle. But they will chamber and fit and fire. But the pressure is too high now. For the later action guns that are chambered in 45 seventy, like the lever actions and 4570 rifles. This ammo would be fine to use. Just not in the trap door Action guns

I used this ammo on deer and antelope. The bullets just seemed to pencil through leaving what appeared to be a 45 caliber hole in and out.

The beauty of big bore and low velocity is the lack of bloodshot meat around the point of impact. We essentially are operating in magnum handgun territory with a standard .45-70 load. That isn't a bad thing when it comes to excess carcass damage potential. Finger size holes all the way through work on about any size game pretty well.

@@johnnorman7708 depends on what you want the bullet to accomplish in terminal performance. Yes the Winchester 300 gr hp 45-70 put a thumb sized hole all the way through, and it did kill the game..... eventually, but I prefer to see a more dramatic/quicker, terminal performance.

My 1895CB has a lot more barrel length. The short barrels are handy but you give up a bit of velocity and power.

If you're looking for velocity don't get a 16" barrel, not getting a complete powder burn.

The Winchester load is weak one You can handload 45-70 within a 200 fps of 458 win mag without the recoil expensive ammo

I despise a 300 grain in the 4570 the 4570 with a 405 g r a i m bullet has proven itself since its introduction it's killed more big game and Men whether it's from a s h a r p rifle or a trapdoor or a lever action rifle history is your best t e a c h e r even when my sister made the 1886 in the 4570 with a 500 grain bullet enough said a lot of game and a lot of men were killed past 500 all the way through 1,000 and I believe the sharps rifle tested these bulshit lightweight bullets and said won't work I know what they were doing in the 1800s it seems like every jackass is on a lightweight projectile Kik my 4570 uses a 5:45 g r a i add about 1300 for the second

To quote the movie "Blazing Saddles" you are full of frontier jibberish. The 45-70 you describe is using an extended length barrel, using true black powder in the round, and using a mid-hard cast lead bullet with a gas check. The pressure was downloaded, and with many being a falling block action, could withstand the pressure of the time. Unfortunately, 45-70 is not factory loaded to its potential now, because people do stupid and do not understand their firearms, age, or capabilities.

For the calvary trapdoor it was a 45 g of 70 g of black powder with a cast bullet 1886 the article that came out by Winchester was that the 1886 rifle was the only rifle that could withstand the strenuous repeated firing of a 500 grain load which was 70 g r a i n black powder when Marlin brought out their lever action the developed a 45 85 g r a i n s with a 405 are 500 I can't remember the 1886 was with a 26-inch the 4570 sharps with a 34 inch barrel the trapdoor was a 22-inch and I believe it came longer I believe most of the 405 grain bullets w e r e Hollow b a s e and I don't believe gas checks were around as your comment of quoting a western character mentioning gibberish I think you're full of condensed horseshit
