    And thanks for brining so many Canadian songs to the fore of America and the world. ( misty eyes and very warm heart ). Born and raised in northern Canada, the musical backdrop of my life being here played by the finest performers. Own and play an old D-18 because of TR influence.

    RIP to Tony and Gordon, two absolute legends. Tony did an album's worth and more of Lightfoot songs but this one always stood out the most to me.

    Whoever gave this a thumbs-down has the poorest taste in music in all history! This is hands-down one of the best songs Tony ever recorded and absolutely executed flawlessly! Unbelievable Talent.

    I'm certain Gordon Lightfoot would never have an objection to Tony doing his songs. He does them justice. and Lightfoot's music is a display in genius all by itself.

    I saw Doc many times. Wonderful experience. I grew up in an adjoining county in western North Carolina. When I was a young child and went to Lenoir, Doc would sometimes be their playing and singing for people.

    Few song more easily bring tears to my eyes. The solos, the lyrics, the class and level of heartfelt perfection all bring this one home. “They will find us in the shadows fast asleep”

    His "official" recorded version is top notch! And is a bit slower than what is heard here. His solo on the recorded version is said to be one of his favorites, and I have to agree.

    Native American is one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time - I learned SO many tasteful guitar licks of this albumn...aplied them to all kinds of music.

    Its amazing how much Tony sounds like Gordon Lighthouse on this tune.Jerry's dobro is great.First time I heard Gordon Lightfoot was in concert in St. John's,Nfld when I was studying...........great music in its way and thanks for posting.

    I see a few comments regarding Tony not mentioning the songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot. I have not traced this clip yet, but if it was a taped concert performance in front of a Bluegrass audience, that might explain things. Bluegrass/Traditional music fans already know GL wrote “Shadows”, the way a pop music fan knows who wrote “Satisfaction”. TR fans also would know TR as a Lightfoot stylist.

    Alison Krauss does a great version. Look I am a huge Lightfoot fan and I know Rice respects and pays respect to Gordon so yes let it go, doing GL's songs are respect in itself and I don't see where he has tried to take credit for his songs. Thank you Tony and Alison for doing great interpretations

    stefandurr: couldn't agree more. I am also a Canadian who grew up with tony rice and anyone who knows music and appreciates legendary talent would not call bluegrass "white trash". This song is beautiful and he is one of the best guitar players/ pickers in the business. Keep sharing this music, I love bluegrass.

    Thanks for posting. TR Sings Gordon was my first Tony album. Listened to it while fixing my car eight hours straight. Found the tape in a box. Apparently, it was borrowed from a friend of my dad's. Love Tony, and I guess Gordon's OK. It's amazing what Tony did with it. Amazing. I wish I could wear a suit and do that. Too cool.

    Tony was so elegant and masterful when playing guitar as Clarence White was. But still we have Jerry. It is a delight to listen Jerry Douglas and Tommy Emmanuel playing together.

    Tony Rice recorded another, more recent, version of "Shadows" with Alison Krauss. It's excellent and the recording quality is as good as it gets.

    I first ran into Gordon Lightfoot in St.John's ,Newfoundland and his great vocals and songs have influenced Tony Rice as in this piece.Wonderful sound by the Tony Rice Unit here.Thanks for posting.

    "Native American" was the first Tony Rice cassette I owned (yeah, I said cassette - I now have it on CD). And the opening song, "Shadows" just spoke to me and I've loved it since. Great video! I'd love to find him doing Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going." -g-

    When I first heard this song I instantly fell in love with it I now listen to either version all the time. Both are very good and I can’t say which is better but Tony’s is the first one I listened to and so it’s a little bit of my favorite more. And what tv shower concert was this

    I guess back then they didn't give credits to the fellow who wrote it. I believe it is Gordon Lightfoot. It surely doesn't take anything away from Tony Rice.... Best bluegrass picker that ever was and still is.... Could be Doc Could give him a run for his money!

    Tony is an American treasure but as soon as he started singing I knew it was a Gordon Lightfoot song who is a Canadian treasure himself. Tony's music is awesome and likes a lot of Gordon's writing but imo Gordon does a great job on this folk song as well.
