It really seems like Tony rubs his hands together, says, oh boy oh boy, where am I going today? Mediaeval England? Demonic possession? Bring it on! And he grabs us all by the hand and says "Come on, you'll like this!" His enthusiasm and what seems a genuine love of learning are wonderful. I *would* like to see him do something with Mary Beard, though. She's about the only one who seems as naturally keen and enquiring as as he is.

Anne has epilepsy. The great fear, the white fog closing in... She was having a seizures. I have epilepsy, they were describing an epileptic aurora on thr farm during the fist event. An aurora is the oncoming feeling of a seizure. Sometimes you go into full blown seizure sometimes it passes..either way you feel terrified. I've also done everything she was doing in the bed. The hallucinations, fighting the doctors. I feel so sorry for these sick people. I can't imagine going through all that with no medical explanation!

I had a childhood friend who had epilepsy. She had a grand mal seizure one summer afternoon and it was one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen. But because I live in a time of scientific enquiry, even at that age, I knew that she was not possessed by a demon. But I can understand, in an age of very little scientific knowledge, why people would think such a thing. As much as we like to romanticize the remote past, let us not forget that it was an awful time for people who didn't fit ":the norm".

Its sad that people I'm related to have picked up some of this madness again. Last year around Halloween they took paintings for my sons room and some of his toys and some of my clothes and burned it. When I expressed my feeling of being violated that someone I trusted with an extra key came into my house in the wee hours of the morning a family member also grabbed me by the neck and said in the name of God demons leave her... For approx 40hrs my son had grand mal seizures that would last 4-5mns to almost an hour. After that it was just over 24hrs with very small seizures lasting a 3-4mns to abt 20mns. After that he had 3 days of hallucinations every time he was awake. He'd be awake for 3-4mns to 2hrs and the whole time he would see things that weren't there. Afterward there were a ton of tests to find out why. They cldnt find anything and he hasn't had a seizure since. Because of seeing all of that and no more seizures to follow, I can definitely understand why ppl without medical knowledge wld think it was possession.

The word necromancy is adapted from Late Latin necromantia, itself borrowed from post-Classical Greek νεκρομαντεία (nekromanteía), a compound of Ancient Greek νεκρός (nekrós), "dead body", and μαντεία (manteía), "divination by means of"; this compound form was first used by Origen of Alexandria in the 3rd century AD. The Classical Greek term was ἡ νέκυια (nekyia), from the episode of the Odyssey in which Odysseus visits the realm of the dead souls and νεκρομαντεία in Hellenistic Greek, rendered as necromantīa in Latin, and as necromancy in 17th-century English.

Psychiatric disorders are not medical conditions. They can be but aren't always.

That's an oxymoron. A psychiatric condition begins and ends with the brain. There usually is a physiological component in every case. Many come from child abuse, or congenital brain defects, while others are chemical imbalances that come later at life or when it is determined by genetics to activate at a certain age. Take for example, a child brutalized every day for 6 or 7 years, every hour of every day living in constant terror. Can you imagine what the long term or even permanent conditions can be inflicted psychologically and physiologically? I don't have to imagine, that child was me. I ended up with PTSD, anxiety and panic disorder, I get scared for no reason, the adrenaline hits my system and knocks me down. Living in a heightened state offers for so long altered my brain chemistry permanently.

@@lonewolf19792000 What you describe is one of the schools of thought, however not the one I think is right. One big red flag is the "chemical imbalances idea". This has NEVER been proven as a causal variable. But it is very happily sold by those advocating unproven medications like anti-depressant, anti anxiety etc. While it is certainly true that there is always a relationship with the physical (biological) substrate within which the psychological phenomenon happen, that doesn't mean the problem is medical. As to your personal story. I am a clinical psychologist, from a rather unpopular school these days. When I hear you describe your problems in terms that have been sponsored almost 100 years by pharmaceutical companies... I feel sad. The avenue of analysis that this style of interpretation leaves open, almost always only leaves room for cures through medication. I believe your anxiety related problems are not treatable with any medication. Medication can often make it worse. What you need 100% respectfully, is to learn about fear, what it is and how it works. I writing a long text, because this really matters to me and so many people are not helped. The key matter is to understand fear from a evolutionary standpoint. I'll elaborate a little. Fear serves to save our life. To give us super confidence in action, to give us superhuman strength and concentration for short bursts. Fear is a beautiful , powerful, exhilarating thing. But it is more difficult in relation to our modern way of life. Practically I would recommend you minimize all medication, and go look for experiences where your fear works in useful ways. You could do a sport that scares you where you need the physical activation. E.g. Walking in the mountains where it is somewhat dangerous. And I also recommend you never ever use the word anxiety again. It is a concept grown from an imo wrong way of thinking about fear. In short, if you learn to enjoy fear again, as it is supposed to be for us, as a useful thing, your body will have no need to activate the flight or fight response when it is not actually necessary. Anxiety is just a medicalized term for the fear we experience when we don't have enough things to naturally be afraid of. We're made to be scared, now and then. When our bodies don't encounter things to be afraid of, we still get scared, of useless things. Well If you read this far :), my hope is that you may experience a spark of inspiration, that may allow you to think about your experience in a new way that may help you. Good luck!

Little Fun Fact: In ancient Greece, the word 'daemon' originally just referred to a being that was beyond human but less divine than a god. It could refer to a ghost, faery, evil spirit or even an angel. Overtime it changed to mean an evil spirt or fallen angel. This could explain where the notion of fairies being fallen angels or demonic entities come from.

It is more easily explained by the churches need to "demonize" the characters and magics of local folklore to scare the peasants away from it. The stories about witches are fantasies of the church to blacken the old ways. The fact so much of the witches supposed rituals were in latin proves it.

Interesting. I'm by no means an expert on faiths, but being raised catholic, and now being muslim, I think there is a difference in the story of lucifer/satan/shaytan. In islam we are taught that it wasn't so much that lucifer saw himself as better than god, but that he saw himself as better than humans, and felt basically that humans were being treated better than they should, and angels unfairly. I'm only mentioning this because I wonder if that difference would have made people behave differently, or changed their psyche in a significant way. Anyone have suggestions on how you think people would have behaved differently in medieval times if they were taught this difference?

I came to that conclusion as well. in a way humankind is a younger sibling race to angels. Plus if he felt himself more important than God, why wait to rebel until humankind was created? in my personal opinion it sounds more like Lucifer among other angels felt attacked when they were told to bow to humans. That sounds like the humans were given a status that in the Angel's minds they had not earned. Lucifer just happened to be the first one who voiced this opinion. To me it sounds more like Lucifer just wanted equality for everyone. Honestly to me, it makes perfect sense when you look at siblings where there is a significant gap in their ages. Mary and Elizabeth Tudor are a good example. Mary was so much older than Elizabeth when Elizabeth was born, and considering her sudden fall from grace right after there is no wonder in my view why Mary was not all that fond of her little sister not to mention later when Edward came along. When you go from being considered the very best and the favorite for most of your life, it can be quite a shock to your system when all of a sudden you have to put up with a little sibling and you have to suddenly compete with them for attention and affection from everyone else.

So I have an act I do at various Renaissance Faires. I'm called the butterfly lady. A big part of it is me having kids look for butterflies that ahead of time I have hidden all over the fairgrounds. In the kids have to find the itty bitty fairies near the butterflies. My brain won't stop with all the stories I tell but translated into evil creatures

In order to understand WHY they say what they say, you have to understand HOW it works.. In order for anything to exist in this world, it has to have a "nefish". This is the shape and model of what you want to exist in the world. The energy it possesses. It's the equivalent to creating a 3d mesh of an object for a video game. Everything has this bc it exists and you cna see it, feel it etc. Even rocks and the dirt itself. We humans also have this. It's PART of the human soul. How we as humans are different as we have the divine spark. This allows us to go against our desires no matter how badly we may want to do them. Animals can not do this. They follow their desires. This is why prayers are said before consuming food, as a reincarnated spirit can be put into trees, rocks, wood, and yes even food. The prayer is used to ward off any would be spirits that may have been placed in said food. You don't know IF that particular food has anything, but as a safeguard the prayer is said. It's also done to give thanks to the creator for allowing you to even come across the food to consume so you may live 1 more day. This is just scratching the surface, but there's a simple little introduction into it.

People still believe in possession today. However, in today’s world believers think that the possessed opened themselves up to the possession. In other words, there’s personal culpability involved. It doesn’t just randomly occur. Also, Exorcisms today do not normally include any kind of harm to the person afflicted. Although I’m sure there are cults that probably do.
