    It was pushed by AEW Fans who were only fans because they hated Vince McMahon. And then after he left and the honeymoon period with AEW was over, they realized how bad the show was and doubled down because they don't wanna admit that they were wrong. And they also live under the delusion that they need to blindly support the product so wrestlers can have more places to work. Even if the place is toxic.

    Nah, some folks don’t like the E and prefer the AEW presentation. Vince being a morally bankrupt, sex creep was only a small part of it. For example: I don’t like the Beatles cuz it’s not interesting music for me. The fact that John Lennon beat his wives bloody is a separate issue

    The Edge speech wasn't designed to stop the tribalism. It was AEW's way of saying "don't criticize us." Airing the Punk footage and bashing WWE on ESPN was AEW's way of rallying the fanbase to support them. Every single time AEW fell short or had controversy, Tony took shots at WWE. It's his way of deflecting criticism and getting the fans to rally behind the company.

    When Cody Rhodes ran AEW it was better, because Vince was in charge and the same storylines were regurgitated throughout the last decade. But when Cody left the company and especially now that Triple H has taken over creative control for WWE, it’s a night and day difference between Paul Levesque’s WWE & Tony Khan’s AEW.

  • @emanuelfer456

    @emanuelfer456

    To me, honestly wwe has still been shit with Triple H in charge, except for a few people like Gunther or LA Knight. Yes, the wrestlemania was good but Raw & Smackdown week after week is not much different from what Vince was doing. It got a lot better than AEW (well was more the fact that AEW got so much worse) but still so far behind what it was in the Attitude Era. Everything is so slow and most matches are 20 minutes so I end up either fast forwarding 80% of it or just watching clips on youtube and even the clips skip to the moment something happens. I became a fan of AEW in the beginning when most of it was so embarrassing that it became funny + having 1 or 2 segments each show which were great (Jericho at start, Cody Rhodes, MJF, Moxley at the start before bleeding every match, CM Punk) when CM Punk quit and MJF left, AEW lost their value.

    Tony Khan needs to realise something. Not everyone that got into AEW was looking for an alternative to WWE, they just wanted a better WWE. Now that the WWE has raised it's game significantly and continues to do so, viewership retention is vital and something that AEW is failing at massively. They aren't bringing in new fans, and now some established fans are starting to tune out too.

    The main issue with AEW is that they do not have an identity outside of being anti-WWE. If you enjoy the WWE product there is no reason to watch AEW. Everyone associated with AEW is telling you they don't want you to watch their show if you enjoy the WWE product. Just grow your own business man.

    100% true statement about the fact that most fans were not looking to stop watching WWE, even back in 2019. They were looking fora better VERSION of what they already liked (WWE). When WWE got better, you started to see some of the fans move back, and start watching AEW less. I' say that AEW's diehard audience is the folks who watch Collision and Rampage, and the 600K who watched Dynamite over John Cena and the Undertaker on NXT.

In that setting, WWE is representative of the wrestling business. It just is. TK sold everyone a dream that the EVP's threw out of the window with their hokey spot monkey bullshit. Punk was right to say they just care about giving Meltzer a stiffy than producing compelling stories within the brand they sold. You both talk about the Ospray vs Danielson match being the best match in US history. It was a great match but THATS it. There was nothing else too it. Its a match for having a match sake. The wrestlemainia match between Codey and Roman had 2 YEARS of on and off story building. By the time it got to the match, the crowed were so invested, even their own announcer started crying. THATS PRO WRESTLING. The match is just 50% of the equation.

My thing is who’s advising Tony Khan because you have established veterans there. The problem is no one has the intestinal fortitude to say “ Tony stop comparing yourself to WWE. You’re not them. Wwe has a stronghold on wrestling going back to the 80’s . Focus on your company and in my opinion the better roster. Unfortunately you’re not taking advantage of it. WWE has been grabbing my attention more and more the last year or so. I really hoped AEW would stay the way it was, production and show wise. Its a big budget knock off WWE. thats it.

    @@Dcheen Tony does some weird shit but if you lived through the 90s, it's not much different than what McMahon, Bischoff or Heyman were doing to generate attention. I don't care what stunts TK pulls as long as we get fantastic matches like Danielson vs. Osprey or Okada vs. Pac on AEW shows. Good creative is elusive in pro wrestling. I'd argue WWE just had a dud of a week from a creative standpoint, and this was for their draft specials.

    Tony has done a fascinating job of tanking all the goodwill that many had for AEW with the way he continually tries to play it both ways with so many things. It started off somewhat understandable where he would discuss the WWE making moves against them and playing victim in a sense while also flexing the resources he has and that they won’t just be bullied. It wasn’t ideal but was somewhat understandable but since then it has gotten worse and worse to sinking to the lows it now has. Instead of promoting the positives of his company on a major sports platform and audience of potential new fans he makes attacks as absurd as this one coming off like a complete jackass. His inept leadership allowed the Punk conflicts to explode and embarrass his company to begin with, he refused to put his foot down to mend fences and use the conflict to at least make some money from it, fired Punk (I get it honestly) but was overly dramatic to try and gain sympathy with the feared for his life line, and as soon as Punk spoke about things and said a lot of the things many people assumed responded by releasing the footage that didn’t do anything positive for the company. And all to finally decide to monetize the conflict well past the stage anybody cared about it to bring back a dude and have him attack you when you fired a dude and were scared for your life that lunged at you which is just so goofy. And decided you’ll finally use it without the biggest name that people would actually care to follow closely on your show. And refuse to consider any alternative ideas to his own and what was optimistically seen as a genuine alternative promotion with the funding and willingness to actually be a relevant option in the market just became a combination of the niche wrestling market that the most invested of fans follow with major financing rather then being a sports based option with a wide reaching appeal to fans. That’s his call because it’s his money but was a let down to see what it’s become and how further entrenched to the niche it becomes despite declining viewership and attendance. Oh well
