I have been watching this video everyday to remind myself how to place my tongue in my mouth while at rest and while eating to address this issue. I recently got tinnitus from TMJ disorder and went to Physical therapy after 6 sessions we found out I had a tongue thrust which made my tongue lay flat in my mouth and kept my upper and lower teeth to touch all day which led to my jaw muscles always working and never getting any break and this led to TMJ issues. I was told to practice what was suggested in this video and it has helped tremendously. Only thing is my mouth feels so weird doing this all day, while keeping my lips closed with my teeth apart. Hopefully It becomes a habit after 21 days...

I have that and it feels my tongue doesnt fit XD altho I can hold it in the right position easily when paying attention. I can swallow well like that also. But I need to constantly remind myslf throughout the day and also my tongue on the sides will go between my molars because there is no space

Hello dr Frey this was explained very well. I once had the perfect smile and now I have an overbite of 3m and I feel it’s changed my smile and effected my confidence. I can’t talk properly either and I really didn’t no this was all because of the tongue. I’ve just tried to keep my tongue up to the roof which I will work on but I feel like I look weird and it doesnt feel quite right what is that? Also by correcting the tongue can it naturally correct the overbite at all? I saw an orthodontist and he said I can have braces but it may close the gap by 50% and I will have to wear a retainer forever. I hope you reply much love from the uk

Thank you! It is possible that you may get some spontaneous orthodontic improvement by mastering this. However, without examining you it is impossible for me to say. Working on this will definitely feel awkward, but you should get used to it over time. Keep in mind that you do not have to move your tongue far from your teeth, as long as your tongue is not touching your front teeth. Good luck!

This method is primarily used to prevent teeth from shifting back after completion of orthodontic treatment. I do not recommend it as a method to control the position of teeth in the absence of orthodontic treatment. If you are an adult, the position of your teeth is unlikely to change whether you learn this technique or not. In other words--if you don't have spacing, you probably won't see spacing develop even if you aren't practicing the exercises. If you already have spacing, but you don't learn the technique, it probably won't get much worse. With respect to your question, if you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, the position of the tongue during sleep is one of the most challenging aspects of controlling the tongue position. While we can improve the position of the teeth with treatment, we have to monitor the impact the tongue can have during sleep. However, if you are not undergoing orthodontic treatment, the tongue has probably already done whatever damage it will do. You may not be able to control the position during sleep, but practicing the technique while awake will cut down on 2/3 of the time each day. Good luck!

The best thing you can do is schedule an exam with an orthodontist. Unfortunately, your questions can’t be answered thoroughly without a comprehensive exam. It could get worse if you do nothing, but proper treatment should be able to prevent that from happening. Thank you for the question!

How much practice does someone need to avoid tongue thrusting? I had a consultation recently and the orthodontist told me he's only seen 2 patients in his career relearn how to position their tongue. Just a suggestion: Dr. Frey please start working giving your videos better titles. This is such a helpful video however it took some digging to find. Outside of videos posted, there is nothing that states your a dentist or orthodontist. I think this could really help you gain more followers.

I’m not sure that it’s something that should be looked at as a pass/fail. From my standpoint, behavior modification includes a combination of awareness and habit breaking. You can’t take the tongue out of the mouth, so it will always be capable of applying pressure toward the teeth if pushing in that direction. My goal is for my patients to recognize what it means to have a tongue thrust (awareness) and help them learn how to keep their tongue from thrusting unnecessarily (habit breaking). I have had many patients achieve success in learning these exercises. Some folks can make an immediate change to tongue posture. Others take more time. Thank you for the suggestion! I never intended for this video or my channel to reach mass appeal. I made these videos so that I wouldn’t have to repeat myself multiple times daily to patients in my office and so that patients could reference the material from home. This video, in particular, has been extremely popular. I’m not surprised because tongue thrusting is so common. But the video was truly made to be played in the office. Thank you and good luck!
