This is such an underrated song and one of the kindest, most considerate ways to describe losing someone to suicide. "Jimmy, he got tired so he couldn't stay" It's not blaming Jimmy for losing the fight, it's not centering the bereaved by asking "why did you do this?!" or any variant of that, it just understands that Jimmy was a little boy who fought his whole life, whether he wanted to or not, the fight was always put on him to endure and endure and endure, and he clearly fought with his whole heart, even aspiring to dream of running away and making a world of his own away from that pain and shame. He confided in his friend but didn't have the words to spell out just how he needed help, because how could someone in the thick of it know all the names or terminology for what they're going through? Let alone a CHILD. Jimmy fought and ran as fast as he could and tried to dance his cares away. But one day he just got too tired and the circumstances that bore down on him, that crushed his heart and soul finally became too overwhelming and he couldn't stay. He tried. He fought. He wrote. He danced. He dreamed. He did literally all he could with what he had, but it just wasn't enough, and he. got. tired. That's all people are when they reach the end. They are tired. And they fight til the very last of their body and mind gives out on them. They are not to blame for losing the fight. They did all they could with what little they could see they had. They need more, tho. They need support. They need resources. They need guidance and understanding. They need someone outside their own head to recognize what is going on, to tell them it has a name, and to fight alongside them, giving them the tools they need to recognize it at every turn, to identify it, and to know how to begin to combat it efficiently. No one can nor should have to figure all that out on their own. We HAVE to reach out. We have to also understand when we reach out, once isn't enough. It's an ongoing effort. Jimmy gave his all til there was nothing left. Thank you so much Toni for making this song and showing you understand.

My brother James (whom we called Jimmy) passed away about a year and a half ago. This song made me cry, thinking of him and all the hardships he and us siblings went thru when we were young. And even tho this song struck a cord it was something that also made me think of the awesome person my brother was.... We miss him everyday. What a beautiful song Tones. Thank you❤️

I can hardly put in words what this song means to me. My childhood friend Jimmy committed suicide last year and I heard this song for the first time right after his passing. This song reminds me of us when we were kids. He was a good soul with the biggest smile you have ever seen but unfortunately, life was not kind to him and he couldn't stay :(

Source: interview I just watched on Apple Music "But, then, Jimmy, Johnny, I put fake names under all these songs. I had to release Can't Be Happy All The Time and Bad Child to show people th real side of me...instead of just covering it up with other people's names." Shit, I just realised that the gay kid hiding in the closet in the Bad Child video is Toni, hiding being gay, putting herself in the closet so her parent(s) stop thinking she's bad.

While taking orders, he sees Johnny in line. He doesn't know why, but a bout of Deja Vu hits him. It isn't until Johnny finishes his order that it clicks. Jimmy writes on his cup. "Johnny, we used to play at the park. We should catch up, my shift ends in half an hour." They make eye contact from across the room. Johnny nods.

This made me think about a friend I had when I was younger. She and I always hung out and played. She wouldn't allow me or our other friends to her house, only a few times. And when I was there, I felt like it was an unhappy home. The mom always looked depressed and her older sister always looked angry and annoyed. And then one day my friend just vanished. My friends and I knocked on her door. Her sister or mother, I dont remember exactly, told us she had run away. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. I just hope she's okay and wish her luck. I listened to Johnny Run Away and heard the name Jimmy in it, found out you have a song named Jimmy about him running away. Made a story about Jimmy and Johnny in my head then made a playlist with only those two songs in it. After all that I am now listening to my short playlist.
