I was having a pretty shite day to be honest. Then watched this and I'm instantly in a better mood. This is one of the songs that I will go out of my way to listen to (Well, watch the live versions, to be fair). Like a lot of their other songs it's just entertaining but in a completely different way. And it's one of those songs that, at least to me, once you've heard/seen the live versions a few times, the studio version becomes better than it originally was. Because the brain connects the song to what you've watched and it's just joyful. Or maybe I've just completely lost it at this point ;D

Every GS album has a song led by Tomozo. They are usually super upbeat and super sweet. They are often called "Fantasy". It's very much Kawaii girl energy mixed up with metal shredding and brutally funky basslines. You know that Tomozo is really an alien princess from the planet Nicorin and 100.000+ years old.

You usually get one TMZ vocal feature song per album/EP (as HomeGnome has said the new album will be the first without one) and she also takes point with the main melodies on most of their instrumental tracks. The majority of the TMZ songs from before Angie & yuri joined have some kind of Fantasy theme and for the 2019 10th anniversary concert they did an extended Fantasy medley of them. When she first joined the band her gimmick was that she was an eternally 14 year old magical girl, and during MC’s she would hit the audience with a magic spell that would knock them back into their seats. In 2014 this changed; turned out she was not actually a magical girl, but in fact an ancient alien from Nicorin Planet who was then 400,000,014 years old and instead hits the audience with her “TOMO-ZO Beam” which blasts them with her alien powers. Her kawaii personality is also a little shady; during concerts she often gets her own MC section where she “introduces” each of her bandmates by telling an embarrassing story about them/roasting them, and then introduces herself by saying something like, “I’m sorry that I’m so cute!” The likely origins of all this was Tomo-zo as a teenager wanted to be an idol and auditioned for an established group (forgetting the name) unsuccessfully with her guitar, before eventually joining EU Phoria which was an all girl rock band with Oreo as the main songwriter. GS has also played as AKB48's backing band (as a follow on from 2012 when they coached members for their "Give Me Five!" single/MV) and Tomo-zo got to be in the group for a day, substituting in for Takahashi Minami when she fell ill.

Surprisingly, “Magic Umbrella Girl” is one of the songs I’ve listened to the most on the album. Just behind “MindSet” and the next song on your list “Days” which is my second favorite of the album.

Tomo-zos song was a nice variation in the run list for the concert. It also would have given the band members a bit a rest from jumping around.

Definitely a change up, and I can see probably being too sweet and poppy for a lot of people on the more hard rock to metal side of things - I love it as a change up within the album but I wouldn't be such a GS fan if TMZ was the main singer or this was their general style. Totally fits within their performance based live show though. Interestingly we've now found out that the new album (that's being released in just 7 days!) will be the first not to feature a TMZ lead song. However, she did apparently write the first 4 songs on the album, including Replica, or at least had a big hand in them. I guess it might be the continuation of their slightly more serious sound/approach that you have suggested from Music Battler to the self-titled album?

Oh in 7 days already? Looking forward to it very much! (Already have the next 4 albums set though, but I'll definately do that here on the channel afterwards 👍)

Sure, I was quite surprised how quickly you did this one after Music Battler and you’ve already seen the 2 lead singles anyway. Maybe would be better to wait until there may be more live performances anyway if you enjoy that part of the reactions too.

TMZ song usually only means, that she gets to do lead vocals. Mostly her songs were written by someone else in the group. This live performance definitely has the feeling of a kids musical. Tomo-Zo songs mostly could be right out of Mary Poppins :-D Cheers :)

Now this is one of my least favourite, if not my least favourite on the album. I have said it before, but the Tomo-zo songs usually are (with the exception of the instrumental track ニコリン星の通勤ラッシュ, which is one of my favourites). Nothing against those tracks though, but they are really not for me (I just generally don't like the happy/Poppy sound). That said, I do think it works better live than on an album and all of those tracks are just extremely Tomo-zo, which works well with her persona on stage. She also generally gets plenty of time to feature her guitar skills in these tracks which I do like. Also, nothing but appreciation for her to do her thing on stage, I would not be able to do that in front of a crowd of music fans (the same with Miku's Omajinai Time for Band-Maid). In an earlier performance Angie was "crying" on stage for this track when Tomo-zo tried to cheer her up, so they even do a whole new thing every couple of shows which is cool. Btw, In this one she is a "magical umbrella girl", but the alien planet you are talking about is Nikorin. The translated name for the instrumental Tomo-zo track that is "Rush hour on Planet Nikorin". She actually used to have alien ears/tentacles on her head during older live shows. Also did you notice that all the lights in the crowd were pink? The members used to have colors and Tomo-zo's was pink, Hana's Blue, I believe Oreo Purple and Koga Yellow, but I'm not possitive on those last 2. They also stopped pushing those colors like they did (and like a lot of J-Pop and Idol groups do), but I guess the fans are still showing them for specific songs.

A Tomo song can lighten everyone's day. Even Takayoshi Ohmura from Babymetal's Kami band is a fan: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kXl6sMSvks2WiZc.html I love the solo in this song too. Probably my favourite Tomo solo ever.
