There is one Tommy Newsome upstage moment that I haven't seen in years where Johnny was wearing a dark suit and was bombing during his monologue. Johnny jokes about his "dying" with his jokes and Tommy deadpans that, "You're certainly dressed for the occasion." Audience roars. Hope that clip surfaces some day soon. Would love to see it again.

There's another great one where Johnny and Tommy are wearing similar outfits. Johnny says to Tommy, "Are we wearing the same outfit? Where'd you get yours?" Tommy responds, "Well, it was in my closet at home, Johnny." Sustained laughter from the audience. Good times.

I loved Tommy Newsome when he filled in for Doc. One night, Johnny was telling a series of jokes about the Santa Anna winds and how bad they were. When he finished his monologue, he asked Tommy where Doc was. In as plain an answer as he could give, Tommy answered: "Gone with the Wind". It brought the house down and Johnny quipped "All these highly paid writers and he comes up with 'Gone with the wind'".

This is what Rickles said on Letterman: "So what do you want me to do? Drop my pants and fire a rocket?" There are three possible reasons as to why the comments are similar: 1) Rickles 'stole' it from Newsom; or 2) Newsom 'stole' it from one of Rickles's routines in the 70s (assuming Rickles used it in his routines back then); or [least likely] 3) it being generally known that the Tonight Show's Johnny/Tommy interactions (including Tommy's comebacks) were actually pre-arranged and loosely scripted, the show and Rickles may have at one point shared the same writers.

Tommy was brilliant. When I was in college, I ran into him and just about all The Tonight Show Musicians at Zep's Music in Burbank. Zep only sold brass and woodwinds. No drums, guitars, etc. Zep was a deep discounter who moved a ton of instruments with a student and pro customer base. There was a sofa and chairs in the store and if you hung out for 5 minutes, somebody famous would walk through the door. One day, my friend Chuck and I were buying new trombones to force ourselves to practice more often and Tommy walked in with Ross Tompkins (The Tonight Show Orchestra pianist). Back then, the show was 90 minutes at taped at 5:00PM leaving the musicians plenty of time to gig around town afterwards. Tommy and Ross invited Chuck and I to a local club for a jam session. We hadn't picked up our horns in weeks and were too intimidated to show up. About 9 months later, I run into Tommy at Zep's and he remembered my name, Chuck's name and asked why we didn't show up at the gig - and mentioned the club by name.

Well this is who he was every night, letting a special moment be. Although uncomfortable in his own skin, put him in front of a camera and audience, and he became the greatest entertainer perhaps we will ever see. You are so right. He was not afraid to be the straight man and give the laugh to someone else.

Johnny learned that from his idol, Jack Benny.

Still not sure if this was geniusly written and rehearsed or spontaneous lighting in a bottle...regardless, one of the greatest comedy skits I have ever seen. Pure magic.

I think the Tampa line was something Tommy was waiting with. He was waiting for Johnny to ask where Doc was. I think the clinic line was a total ad-lib.

Either way, it was brilliant and here we are over 30 years later still enjoying it. The clinic line sounded like a genuine ad lib.

Johnny was like the old friend you loved just hanging out with. And America did for over 30 years.

Just another indication of how great a host Johnny was - he never shirked from including the rest of the 'cast' from joining in on the jokes. Often at his expense, too. He was all about entertaining the audience, not himself. That was just a hilarious end result of an impeccable program.

I think he heard the 'Tampa' line the first time Tommy said it but he asked him to repeat it. The 'clinic' line was just a great ad lib and Johnny milked it for a couple of minutes. They all were so good on the air.
