I've always been a fan of technique for how it felt to me and allowed me to do things. Seeing this guy reach great stick heights and achieving great sounds and quality of tone is inspiring and amazing

This guy gives great lessons. This is a great groove. On the extra fast samba, you can use quarter notes part of the time on the ride until you can get the strength to play it in all eighth notes. The left hand pattern will keep the feel going with the bass drum. Just like his explanation of the really fast jazz cymbal pattern, you can revert to quarter notes part of the time to keep from "running out of gas" on the pattern.

Amazing!!!! True!!!!!!! Thank you for this information, Now I am changing the way I was playing bossa!!!

  • @ofdrumsandchords

Bossa is in 4/4 (4ter note feel) while the samba is in 2/2. Quite different feels, and the basic snare rythm of bossa-nova is very specific. A theme like Wave (Antonio Carlos Jobim) is built around the bossa-nova clave. Most people don't understand that, you hear a drummer playing a samba, and a sax destroying the theme...

He's counting as if samba is in 4/4. I suppose that makes for easier verbal counting. But samba is usually written in 2/4. Correct counting would be "1 e & uh 2 e & uh."

What would you guys suggest if you literally can not get this groove down, no matter how many times people teach it to you, how many videos you watch, and no matter how much you practice?

keep practicing it until you do. slow it down. play it one limb at a time, then two limbs, etc. work on your limb independence. play with a metronome at all times.

He showed an accent to show the 'wrong' way to play. And after that he convince the learner it is not supposed to be an accent like what he just showed, but the right way is not with accent like he played formerly.
