Tomic & Silver Horde Plug Tips - How to Catch Chinook on Plugs

Fishing plugs might be my all time favorite way to catch Chinook Salmon. Some plugs catch fish, some DON’T!!! In this video I share a number of tips I’ve learned over the years, many from old salty fisherman!

Good points. But, often it's all about colour too. Sometimes the littlest thing can be the difference. With big fry pattern flys that we made, we noticed one rod was always getting the fish. We know that the inside rod can often be more productive, but this rod was always catching, inside or outside. We checked, and both rods had the same flys on, the same colour. But then we noticed a difference. The flys had different coloured eyes on the epoxy heads. It was the littlest detail, but it was a huge factor. We changed the other fly to match, and yup, now that rod lit up too.

The one SUPER IMPORTANT thing that I forgot to talk about - Clip your line in at least 20-30 feet behind the ball. The farther back, the more room the plug will have to dance around. Think about it as walking a dog on a leash - a 1ft leash keeps the dog at your side, a 10ft leash lets the dog roam!

Nice video. Thanks for sharing. I know what you mean about those old special plugs. I had one oldtimer plug while I was commercial fishing with my dad that would outfish everything all the time. It brought in more big chinook than anything else we used. It is probably over 50 years old now. I still have it and use it for sport fishing now, all these years it is still my go to plug. :-)

Great vid. I fish plugs in 9&10 and usually run them off 5’ leaders with zero issues. 50-60’ behind the boat. I use tomic tubbies and you can fish those a little slower than regular tomics. Best of luck for you and your boat this year and beyond

Have you ever ran a 4 or 6 bead chain above your hook? I feel like that's helped me increase bite percentage. Getting that hook behind the tail in case the fish decides to try and nip its tail first. Great video and insight, thanks!

you’ve nailed this! The very best advice you impart is the hook offset . From mooching for salmon to jiggling for bottom fish, the hook offset is the secret to good hook sets

Teeth marks on the paint might be a good indicator too. Hook rash means it’s been fished. Not a sign of nibbles.

Fantastic question…I’m not a fan of using the smelly jelly or oily based products. Somehow/someway it gets on the Scotty Release clips and you’ll end up false popping off all day. I wash my plugs right before they go down with either Lemon Joy or ProCure makes a cool foaming soap product called “Bad Azz Hand and Lure Soap”.
