Having rewatched all of the timeline videos i realized that all of the timelines are actually good, this finally made me realize that there isn't a "weakest era" in Tomb Raider games. The classic era was the one that brought Lara and her adventures to reality, the Legend reboot tried to take a modernized look on what Lara's adventures could be and also changing her backstory a bit focusing more on what happened to her parents in this new timeline, and finally, the Survivor trilogy brought a more realistic Lara that even when she's scared she tries her best to move on while also caring more about her friends.

Oh wow, a reasonable take, that's rare nowadays

I knew nothing about Tomb Raider before I played this trilogy, but I was absolutely blown away by these games. I love Lara’s character development and that she finally defeats Trinity at the end of Shadow of the Tomb raider, finally getting revenge for her father’s death and saving the world in the process. These games are definitely a 10/10 in my books and would recommend to anyone whether you know anything about Tomb Raider or not.

@@muddymite4936 other than the legend trilogy, the older ones feel dated. the original is somewhat revived in anniversary (part of the legend trilogy), but the other ones are not worth playing in my opinion. reading their stories is enough. tr2 was remade by fans and it looks great, but i wouldn't want to play it after survivor.

This trilogy offers a fun action experience and offers more combat versatility that was lacking in the older games. Combat was the weakest aspect in the 90's games and didn't change much throughout the 2000's.

In the first 6 games her parents are alive. They changed that to add more depth to the story. Not sure if it was really the best choice since the stories of the next 6 games kept revolving around this way too much.

Roth's death was the PERFECT moment for Lara to start using his pistols. Like, I can't imagine any better reason for her to use them both!

THANK YOU for diving into the Dark Horse comics that take place in-between games! So much happens in those that I think more people should know about.

Had no idea they even existed but does sam ever get better the last comic is sad if thats how it ends for her in jail

After Roth died they should’ve gave you the option to use either one or two pistols from there on out in every game. I like how you include the comics and stuff. Helps to flesh out characters.

Great video. I don't know how Lara has any friends, academic or professional colleagues willing to have anything to do with her. Almost everyone she has anything to do with ends up dead.

I get the reboot is not the same Lara as the og but she is an incredible idea to me. I really love it being very action packed Lara being so grounded and basically a female Rambo. Instead of acrobatic flips and shorts, we see a stealth survivor who uses guerilla tactics and has beauty and practicality with pants. The only thing missing is her dual pistols. I see reboot Lara as a homage to action movies of 80s and that's why I love it. The story could have used work though...

I personally love everything about these games than the original games. They just didn’t interest me at all. I understand why people don’t like the new version- maybe because they want to relive their childhood? But these stories are just way better. A very unpopular opinion lol

the fact that Lara is tailed every time she goes to meet someone and never realizes it

Even having grown up during Tomb Raider's heyday in the 90s, the Survivor Croft is by far my favorite timeline

Also love the plot timeline at the bottom of the screen with the climbing axe icon. Very neat detail.

I love the fact you can just play the games get a awesome story but you get more lore with the books and comics

I can't overstate how much more interesting the plot the whole timeline would be if there were choices in game (like BO2, not as complex as a full RPG), which you could then import into the next game. Stuff like taking the divine source, killing Constantine etc.

This is absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much being so thorough, precise and detailed with the full stories tying up the plots from the games, novels and comics. Amazingly put together.

Wow, that was a long video! I thought the classic timeline would be longer since it had 7 games to cover, but this one went into lots of detail about the novel and comics that came in between the games. Good job guys! I just finished Rise of the tomb raider and its DLC recently, so I have yet to play Shadow of the Tomb Raider. After seeing this, I might play the demo sooner rather than waiting to play it in Sept for its 3rd anniversary (and continue in October for the series 25th anniversary)

Rise is personally my favorite- just for nostalgia reasons, but shadow is such a beautiful game. The scenery is amazing and I feel like I’m actually in the jungles of Peru with Lara. The story is also very Interesting- the characters are very well written. ❤️

I was able to buy and play Shadow back in June and it was amazing, it was a fantastic ending to the trilogy and just a blast to play and I think you would love it

I love this game retrospective in all its iterations. Thank you guys

The survivor arc was very well done. Set the tone for the next game that was just released. I hope they continue this story arc years later so we can still celebrate her past adventures

Netflix is supposed to be continuing the story after Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The show will be an anime with Hayley Atwell taking over as the voice of Lara Croft.

I knew sam would be afflicted by that soul transfer thing. It took too long before lara gets to her.

You asked so... Personally, I find the story incredibly boring and cliched. The other games didn't have great stories, but they had a comic book adventure feel to them that was as fun as it bombastic. These feel too serious that you take them at face value... Which isn't that interesting. Lara's character in the first game of the trilogy was great... I didn't feel like she grew much in Rise or Shadow, and was just boring to watch. Gameplay is fine, but the more "open" they made the gameplay, the more tedious and boring it got. The survival/crafting aspects of these games were the worst parts, and despite Shadow having great platforming puzzles, the environments were boring and the survival part was just a drag. I think these games are fine... Liked the 1st game, and enjoyed a lot of Rise... Shadow remains the only game I just could not finish out of boredom.

I love the recap and I loved the 3 games, but only through this video did I realize how impressed I am that Lara still has any braincells left. She was probably knocked on the head, flung around and fell unconscious more times than a Football player over the course of their whole career

Shadow of tomb raider has satisfying bad ending and it's music and soundtrack was amazing

Very insightful and interesting glad shadow of the tomb raider got properly explained as questions popped in my head trying to understand some of its story, most of em are explained with those books n comics I didn't know existed, be good if these were referenced in the games as I had no idea and left me confused for years, as always I look forward to lara returning in the future hopefully, cheers heaps for this doco very much love your work on what you've done

I am not a fan of the survivor series. Like I only played them because it was Tomb Raider but the story always intrigued me. This sure helped me understand a lot more.

Great video! It shows you put a lot of work in them. 🙂 However, this is my least favourite timeline, Legend being my favourite. What I like in this tho is that Lara wears trousers instead of shorts.

She is definitely in my top 5 game characters

I kinda wished the first game had dlcs like it's sequels. We could've had some of them following what happened to Sam after the ritual or maybe Lara's investigation into Trinity.

Unpopular opinion: I like this Lara much more than the original

I cant stand the internet. The comments suck. Nobody can just enjoy media. It’s all about canceling people out. The like found despite the thorough analysis is… yeah. Just sucks.

Odd that in one of the comics at 42:02 the helicopter is an apache, but at 42:09 the helicopter is now a Ka-52

The First Tomb Raider (in the Japanese islands) was a super good game. Awesome gameplay, history and you know, samurais and ancient Japanese gods.

OMG love it! But it's sad to here about Sam's story up to Shadow of TR. Also it's a shame that ¨the survivor timeline has no games about the comic events between the main games. I 'd love to see lara in opera :D

This Lara and these games get so much hate. I grew up with both older series, the originals in my early childhood and the Legend games in my late childhood, and despite my absolute love for those games (especially Legend), I find that the Survivor timeline has so much more to tell and develops Lara in a way we never got to see in the other timelines. Sure, Legend Lara does have moments of vulnerability and other emotions at times, such as, "WHERE IS MY MOTHER?!" but Survivor Lara grows so much as a character throughout the games. She gets too much hate and not enough love.

@@ksander_9712 It really is just purists who hate them, but they're by far the most vocal, because anything that isn't older Lara (or even anything that isn't specifically classic Lara for some people) is automatically garbage, I guess. I attribute it to the fact that they can't play out their power fantasies as well with a character who grows and matures when compared with one who starts out as a cheeky badass.

@@ParadoxPandox I don't hate these games, I just don't consider them Tomb Raider as the gameplay is completely different. The og games were anything but power fantasies, it's the sense of isolation you get from being in a big foreign open space full of possibilities that I miss.

I still hope u guys will do a halo timeline video that would be pretty cool

How I became addicted to this game: my mom bought- Tomb Raider Definitive Edition. I played it once and because obsessed 😩

No wonder they call this the survivor timeline- Jesus this turned into a horror game

It still boggles my mind that none of the Solarii (not even one) had ever thought of destroying the body rather than putting themselves through so much effort of trying to bring the sun queen back to life. Hahahaha how fucking stupid 😂

Just recently someone I know on Instagram said she was going to cosplay as Lara Croft but spelled it “Laura Croft”. I almost had an aneurysm reading that.

They had me up until the mushroom of immortality

They retconned so much in the comics omg. Also love how they all start with “Men in masks are following Lara, Sam, and Jonah.” I don’t know why they bothered to put so much work into comics that bridge the gap between games when they don’t bother to work any of those stories or characters into the games. “Well we don’t want to leave anyone out who don’t read them” well... then don’t do comics then? Because that basically means they’re non canon even though they’re supposed to be canon. It’s such a waste. This whole trilogy should be called the wasted potential trilogy.

You are absolutly correct. Also did they ever explain who The Cardinal is/was. I thought that Rourke was the 1 who murdered Laura's dad as well as Ana, but they never confirm or deny it. It legit feels like the people who made this trilogy were just going with the flow instead of planning everything out from the start before they started production on the 1st game. That way, they can properly introduce us players to world, setting and characters and create a main villian who is far more memberble than the 1 we currently have. Also, the killer should have had way more screen time than they got in the games (which is none)

Rise feels like a reboot in its own right, it’s so far removed from the actual reboot it feels like another origin story, not to mention they changed Lara’s backstory between reboot and Rise In promotional material for Reboot it was said Lara’s parents were BOTH missing and presumed dead, I remember this vividly because everyone breathed a sign of relief that they were essentially preventing themselves from going down the parent drama again... boy were we wrong. They changed it suddenly in rise so that her father was around and it was her mom that was missing and presumed dead. They kind of just went with it the entire time, there was no structure to this trilogy, no plan, just improvising as they went along. Which is why this era of games is so annoying. They tried so hard to be ~gritty~ and “realistic” but just come off as messy and boring.

After all this time I still like Rise better than the other 2, but also still get weirded out by how much older Sofia looks compared to her father (which is immortal, but still...)

I think I read somewhere Konstantine’s men aren’t with Trinity. They’re their own faction run by Konstantine & Ana and have just been paid by Trinity. So basically just mercenaries that don’t have Trinity ties more than payment. Whereas Trinity hires more mercenaries through Rourke but Trinity soldiers work with Rouke as well.

you know with the right funding cast,writers and directors this would be one hell of a show ...lets say hbo with maybe the dragon queen from game a thrones as laura
