If you are visiting a tomb it is common curtesy to show respect to the deceased. Apparently you also have never visited Lincoln’s tomb because the same respect is required there. If you’re going to use your “freedom of speech” as an excuse to act like an asshole and show disrespect to the very people that gave you that freedom then you’re little more than a bottom feeding maggot.

    @Gee Tar yes, but as sad as that is, how does that detract from one person's death? Even if we don't know the fallen personally, there were some that did. Silence is respect for the dead and respect for those who knew them. And if I understand correctly, then they may have died serving the their country. The dead are not to be mocked.

  • @The_Ultimate_Faker

    @The_Ultimate_Faker

    @Gee Tar I can't believe you said that. That is so disrespectful. Did you miss the point of my comment? That life may not have been special to us, but it was to somebody. Life is a very precious thing, and we should do our best to protect it. I am just another person on the internet. If I die tomorrow you could care less, and I don't blame you because you don't know me. But my family would be devastated. Does that put things into perspective for you? Also, I don't mean to jump to conclusions, but people who make remarks like the one you did are usually struggling with a loss of their own or questioning their own existence. If you need an ear to hear, I can be there for you. Obviously, I'm no substitute for a irl friend or a therapist, but if you or anyone reading this needs someone to listen, anyone, I will.

    +rich smith Chances are if they're at a service in a cemetery, the person who died was close to them. It's hard to mourn for a stranger. However, they are idiots. They should know that it is disrespectful and shameful to conduct themselves in such a manner. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a solemn place. It's not a place to be laughing and goofing off. When I was in Europe, I went to the graveyard on Normandy at Omaha beach. It was dead silent. Nobody was laughing or even talking loud. It's just baffling how these people can be so disrespectful.

This is a ceremony honoring every unidentified KIA/MIA American soldier, to show that their ultimate sacrifice was not in vain and that we still remember them and what they did. Those who wish to see it as a memorial will do so with respect, and with that as their reason for viewing it. I maintain that the majority of the crowd are there to see the tourist guide advertised...changing of the Guard ceremony, rather than pay repects to the fallen. Jeffrey Dexter Boomhauer III I repeat a previous entry..... . Ranked #2 of 71 Attractions in Arlington....Arlington National Cemetery, Memorial Dr, ☎ +1 703 607-8000, [17]. 1 Apr-30 Sep 8AM-7PM daily, 1 Oct-30 March 8AM-5PM daily. Just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., adjacent to the Pentagon, this national military cemetery includes John F. Kennedy's tomb and the house of General Robert E. Lee. Visitors can watch the changing of the guard ceremony in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Oct-March every hour, Apr-Sep every half hour. If you want to explore the entire cemetery, which is enormous and hilly, in a short amount of time, take the Tourmobile tour [18] (Adult: $8.50; Children: $4.25). There is also a large parking garage that is a good place to dump your car and then catch the subway or Tourmobile into D.C. (From the Arlington travel guide/list of tourist attractions) I know what it is, you know what it is. this is my point... it has been turned into a tourist attraction..

    Not completely related, but in middle school we had a D.C. trip and if you wanted to lay the wreath at one of these ceremonies, you had to write an essay, 4 people were chosen, I, luckily was one of them. So I’ve never seen the ceremony before as I’d never been to the cemetery, we went in November and it was freezing the day we laid the wreath, I remember shivering as we were waiting for the guard to come up to us, when he started talking at first, it was this loud, booming voice that I wasn’t expecting, then he starts to walk towards us, I had never felt so intimidated in my life, so I don’t know what to expect when he starts talking to us, he gets to us, and he was just a really nice guy! He asked us how we were and was just super nice! Not the most exciting story but I thought I’d share it.

    My family and I visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on a trip to Washington, D.C., in 1983. I hadn't reached voting age yet, but I remember, even then, that the sentry had to issue a "be quiet" command to some giggling tourists in our group. Even at that young age, I was disgusted that there were always people who couldn't keep their damn mouths shut for just a few minutes. And these people were adults (who ought to know better), not kids, that got reprimanded by the sentry.

    Elizabeth Glasby because they’re soldiers. Who’ve gone through years of training to be where they are. They sacrificed their freedoms to preserve the freedoms of the citizens. And I promise you they are not paid all that great. Such an ignorant comment. Do you have any idea how much specialized training they received to do this job? There’s reason they are considered by civilians to be the top 1% of soldiers. They are incredibly professional and extremely measured in that they do. Takes a lot of time and training to do that. People say thank you because soldiers like him and me left our homes to be apart of something bigger than ourselves and to serve the country. That’s why people say thank you. That is his uniform that he is personally responsible for maintaining at all times and ensure it’s perfect. It isn’t a comfortable in the sun or cold and he spends a lot of time up keeping it. People also say thank you because the tomb guards like him ensure that the tomb is guarded every second of every minute of every hour of every day of every month of every year since it was made. They’re out there in the dead of the night when the cemetery is closed. They’re out there in the thunder and lightning of storms. They were out there when hurricanes hit and the president gave them permission to step down. They refused and instead continued to walk and guard the hollow grounds of the unknown soldier despite the howling winds and rain. They’re out there in the blizzards marching in freezing snow and cold, they’re out there in the hottest days of the summer. People say thank you because that is what sacrifice and selfless service looks like. I long for a time when those become something the average civilian strives to be.

    Elizabeth Glasby We meaning my Brothers do this because WE feel the need to be something bigger than we are. To protect and defend those who are either unable or unwilling to protect and defend themselves. When you enlist you voluntarily give up your rights and freedoms so others can be free. I did it even for people like you. I don’t expect a thank you, I didn’t enlist to be thanked, I did it because I Love my country.

    When Hurricane Isabel threatened to hit D.C. in 2003, for safety reasons, the Soldiers were allowed to stand down so that they didn't have to go through the storm outdoors. Not one left their post and they continued to stand guard. That is the character of those whom we have protecting this hallowed tribute. Respect!

    @PinkGuy VEVO Dayum! All my life I have had such admiration for those who were dedicated to sacrifice, with great passion, to preserve the ideals that this great country has set as a foundation, and to provide at this place, a means of remembrance for patriotic values for future generations to see. And all that can be summed up as brain washing? I think you smoke to much tree bark.

    Wars are stupid and the men who start them and stays behind closed doors while letting other men fight their fights are nothing but sadistic, narcissistic, monsters. I pity the sad souls who were forced (Or Brainwashed) to fight to death from fights that were unnecessary and fruitless.

    I have been to the Tomb of the Unknown. It was surely a sight, and there is nothing funny about it. I watched two soldiers guard these people. Good men.
