You have to remember, some bodies were blown to pieces from bombs and grenades, some were burnt to ash and char. Bodies can suffer many ravages that will make it unrecognizable and unidentifiable. Now we have DNA to help with identification. I have been to Arlington National Cemetary many many times, and it has never ceased to humble me. As a Veteran, and Son of a Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, I will always have the deepest love and respect for those taken in war. One of the terms I hate is Lost. They're not lost. They gave themselves and their lives limbs and sanity in defense of and for the sake of the liberty and freedom of this country, sadly too often for people who fail miserably to show respect. A Government who often find it too easy to renig on the promises given to those who volunteer their service. Why are so many Veterans now living homeless on the street while people who aren't even citizens are housed, fed, educated, and given medical care. It's a sad thing. Our So Called leaders on both sides of the aisle are a disgrace and a slap in the face to those who lie within the Hallowed grounds of Arlington, and other grounds around the world. But we Veterans appreciate the respect that of late have been shown by folks like you, who are citizens of a Foreign land. Maybe just maybe our young folks will see the respect and get a hint. We can always hope. And maybe one day, those young folks will become a new group of leaders with a greater respect for those who fought and died or even survived in defense of out freedoms.

Amen to that Brother I myself am an Army Cold War era Veteran, a cousin and 2 Uncles in Vietnam, 2 Uncles in the Korean War, and an Uncle and my Father that were in WWII. I have a Niece & Nephew currently serving in the Army, and no doubt in my mind future generations of my family will continue to Serve. As a Veteran I see the term “I/We took an oath that has no expiration date, to Protect the Constitution of the United States from all enemies both foreign and domestic”, I myself am disgusted with what our Government has made this Great Nation into, but the Insurrection of Jan 6th (instigated by Trump) shows how our Government will respond if us Veterans follow our Oath.

@veteranhoffman6776 Oh yes! Solitary Confinement before actual charges or trial or conviction. No visitation or representation. Denial of medical care and assistance. You would think these folks had burnt down buildings, thrown rocks and other things and even killed cops, stopped traffic on highways that caused the deaths of innocent people who couldn't get to hospitals on time. But in truth their only real crime was supporting Donald Trump instead of the Braindead Babbling Buffoon Brandon!! I've heard those "I took an oath that never expires ckaims as well. Here's what I've got to say. If I were even physically able and this administration came out and said I had to go back in the service, I'd tell them just how far they could stuff that order up whatever orifice they chose! I would not serve under a Puppet dictator like Braindead Babbling Buffoon!! I would however do my best to survive and keep my closest safe.

In 1942, the British Ship HMT Bedfordshire was struck by a torpedo from a German U-Boat off the coast of North Carolina. All 37 sailors were lost. In the following days the bodies of four of those sailors washed ashore the small island of Ocracoke NC. Local residents buried the four in a local cemetery and cared for those graves in honor of the sacrifice of those young men. Every year, the National Park Service, the US Coast Guard, and the British Royal Navy have a ceremony at the site to honor the men who lost their lives in the attacks. Eventually the grounds were leased in perpetuity to the British Commonwealth for as long as the sailors are buried there, so technically the four men are buried on home soil "That is forever England.” I visit that site every year to pay my respects.

I served in the 3rd Infantry (The Old Guard) in 1972, in a regular company on a Color Team. Fort Myer abuts Arlington and I’ve spent many hours in the cemetery and watching the Tomb Guards changing ceremony. It is impressive, and it takes a great deal of work and personal sacrifice to be a sentinel and allowed to “walk the mat”. Regardless of the rank of the sentinel, they do not wear any insignia on their uniform so there is no chance of outranking the honored dead. When there was the hurricane they were given the option to shelter inside, but refused and continued their duty. Also, with DNA now the Vietnam unknown was identified and his family wanted him brought nearer to them so that grave is now empty. No other unknowns have been found from that war. - Boomer69

As a sign of respect for the forgotten soldiers, the guards that protect the Tomb itself wear NO rank insignia on their uniforms. They do this to ensure that NO guard will be of a higher rank than one of the forgotten soldiers. Meaning that they technically don't even qualify as a PRIVATE (lowest rank in the military) because without the rank insignia on their uniform, they HAVE no rank at all. Outside of their "guard duty schedule", their other military uniforms have their designated ranks.

A Vietnam vet who made it back physically intact but not mentally. He died about 25 years before my son was born. We did find my dad's grave and I tell you it is incredibly somber when you are there all you can see in all directions are grave stones. We also watched the changing of the guard. His great grandfather was a guard at The Tomb of the Unknowns. One Americans experience. Thank you for your respect.

In a small gesture I have traveled to small cemeteries where I have found more than likely military graves that haven't had visitors and not cleaned for years. I visit clean, place a small American flag to fly above them, I state their name rank and theater they served and or died. One more time someone remembers who they are and what branch they were in. My thoughts are that after your last visitor of your last resting place is gone no one pays attention to that little grave. All I can do to make sure they are remembered is just that, remember them till my next visit.

Thanks for doing this one guys. The remains of the Unknown Soldier of Vietnam later was identified through DNA. His remains were by his family's request exhumed and now it is dedicated to the MIAs and POWs from all wars since there were no other unidentified remains of Vietnam. The guard who walks the mat does not have any rank insignia on his uniform. This way he will not possibly outrank the Unknown Soldier. It's my opinion that Taps, Last Post in the UK, or any country's equivalent is the most somber, saddening, sound that an instrument can produce. My eyes tear uo every time i hear it. The US also began using Dog Tags during WWI. There are more videos about the Old Guard themselves which are also interesting. These men deserve nothing less, all of the Unknown, the Missing, the KIA, and those who battle/ the ones who have lost their battle at home all deserve far more than we can ever repay them.

Words to Taps‍ (Note: there are no "official" words to Taps but the most popular Taps Lyrics are below) Day is done, gone the sun, From the hills, from the lake, from the skies. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Go to sleep, peaceful sleep, may the soldier or sailor, God keep. On the land or the deep, Safe in sleep. Love, good night, must thou go, when the day, and the night need thee so? All is well. Speedeth all To their rest. Fades the light; And afar Goeth day, And the stars Shineth bright, Fare thee well; Day has gone, night is on. Thanks and praise, for our days, 'Neath the sun, Neath the stars, 'Neath the sky, As we go, this we know, God is nigh. These Taps Lyrics are the most popular, however several adaptions have been created. I learned of this before joining the USMC. Never could hear TAPS without the first verse always running through my head.

Gentlemen, thanks for your reaction to this. If you don’t already know, the Netherlands has a moving tradition from WWII. British, Canadian and US cemeteries are located in the country testifying to the cost of their liberation. EVERY ALLIED SOLDIER buried in Netherlands is adopted by a family. They know the history of their soldier, his name, unit, often how and where he was killed. This has happened for 80 years. The graves are passed down through families. They are decorated at important holidays, Christmas, Easter, Armistice Day, US Independence Day. Watch the videos. It brought me to tears.

The Vietnam Veteran that was mentioned by @Ranger-1214 was Lt Michael Blassie. He was an Air Force pilot that was shot down. His remains were identified and returned to the family In Missouri. I heard the story from his sister who was 10 years younger than Michael. She is Colonel (Ret) Patricia Blassie. She told us his story during an annual reunion with the Utapao Alumni Association. We are a group of retired veterans who at one time or another were stationed at Utapao RTNAF in Thailand. They had to pick from caskets privately so as to not clearly pick one from a specific theater. That way no one can rule ppl of other theaters out, making the soldier truly unknown from the entire war.

Identity or "dog" tags have been around in America since the Civil War (1861-1865) but not issued. They were purchased or made by individual soldiers. They were not issued until 1899 and not called dog tags until 1936. The Korean War Unknowns were already buried on American soil, in Hawaii. The selection process was for which would be brought back to Arlington. Here is a very good video that goes more in depth about the Sentinels of the Tomb, which you may like: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g5mW1MSBoM2nkcY.html

What you have to think about is how many families lost loved ones in wars whose remains were never recovered. This is for them as well as for the rest of us to remember those lost.

Also while the tomb guard is on post they do not wear any indication of rank so to not outrank the interred soldiers.

The US Naval Ship that brought home the remains of the Unknown Soldier of WWI , the USS Olympia has a glorious past, and present . The Olympia was Admirals Deweys flagship, at the Battle of Manila Bay , during the Spanish American War . The ship resides along the Philly waterfront ...where she is still the oldest , largest steel hulled commissioned ship in the US Navy . Have been on it several times .....absolutely dwafrted by the USS New Jersey , which is berthed on the New Jersey side of he Delaware R iver

When the Sentinels are actively walking guard duty at the tomb they do not wear any insignia of their rank so they do not outrank the Unknown soldiers who ranks are a mystery. It's a matter of respect. so unknow.

In Flanders Fields BY JOHN MCCRAE In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. The Americans Answer Flander’s Field You did not die in vain, Oh Flamder’s brave, For other men know of your grave, The blood you lost, The Torch you tossed, Others now will hold up high, Oh Flanders dead, We have heard your cry, Unknown

The origin of the Arlington Cemetary is equally intesting. During the US Civil War, Union command became so annoyed with turncoat Conferedate General Robert E Lee they started burying dead Union soldiers in the front yard of his Arlington estate. Over time, the graves ultimately occupied so much of the property the Lees never reclaimed it.
