Tom Tom 550 - Routes or Tracks, which is better?

Sat Navs treat routes and tracks very differently. Here is how a Tom Tom Rider 550 deals with them and how they are different. Tom Toms own MyDrive system can save GPX files wirelessly to the Sat Nav but they appear as tracks, what if you want a route with all of your waypoints? You must save as an ITN file and transfer to your Sat Nav instead, here's how.

Use a planning app such as MyRouteApp. Set the map to Tom Tom and then use as many waypoints as you like to define every road you want to ride on without deviation. The Tom Tom MyDrive is a bit too clunky I find.

Great info Terry, I’ve struggled with the Rider 550 blindly following tracks I’d sent across and not always hitting the way points I wanted, now I know I can transfer routes and actually ride the exact roads I want to ride. Even now, it still does weird stuff, like wanting to send me off through small towns instead of staying on route. Defeats the point if you have to know the roads well enough to override the navigator. But will persevere! Cheers for the video!

All great Terry. I also use MyRouteApp but if you plan a route and want TT to stick to it and not find its own way you have to save it as a track but you will loose any stops/waypoints saved so I'm now having to split my routes between cafe, fuel and lunch stops so TT knows when and where I've planned to stop. Also not very pleased with having to import/use TT's My Drive in order to transfer routes over via WiFi. Fingers crossed the new MyRoute Navigation App will address these points.

If you add enough waypoints and match the settings from myrouteapp and Tom Tom, e.g. avoid motorway etc, you can keep your waypoints and the route will vary little when saving as an ITN file and manually importing to the Sat Nav. The Expand feature helps out with that. I have the Nav app on my phone, it is very good and replaces my Sygic which got very laggy with voice commands. The phone is not as reliable though so I only use it for day out stuff, I got the Tom Tom after the phone kept shutting down on hot days. You can set MyDrive to automatically synchronise the track to the Tom Tom so when saved in MyRouteApp it appears on the Sat Nav next time it gets a connection. I haven't opened MyDrive in donkeys. I have found both Sat Nav and Phone to be inflexible at times and I always have stops or destinations I know I want to make a favourite so at any stage on a track I can just say, "sod it, take me to xxx!" Good luck with MRA Nav, it is very good.

Yes, you have to keep an eye on that. This can happen a lot if you do not take great care to make sure your way point is definitively on the road and passable by you and not 10m off in a farmers field. If it happens just stop, cancel the route, re-select it and tap on the next waypoint of the journey. Then on the Sat Nav, and choose "start route from here".

It does try but I often find it doesn’t go about it very intelligently. If you are unsure of the area you can also find yourself picking up on the route and going backwards. If I get forced too much off a track I tend to cancel the track completely and restart. When it asks if you want to go to the start or nearest point chose nearest point(of course) and you get started again in the right direction. Cheers Andy 👍

But I have found these are normally fairly close in terms of time. I wonder is the Garmin picking up live traffic and the Tom Tom isn't? My Tom Tom, by default, cannot pickup traffic unless I create a wireless hotspot with my phone which allows the Tom Tom to update with live traffic data and possibly shortening the time based on better information? Just a thought?

Now I connect nothing and just use the visual directions. The spoken directions tended to override cardo comms, especially in town which was quite annoying if you were with others or a pillion. In the earlier days with an iPhone 6 (or 8) I think it was the 550 would receive texts, show callers and all sorts whn the phone was connected. Not long after Apple closed down a lot of the functionality over Bluetooth for security reasons and the functionality disappeared overnight. So the only way I would use my iPhone would be to create a local wireless hotspot on the iPhone 13 I have which will pass traffic data and provides access to new tracks via Tom Tom MyDrive. BUT - I am having difficulty with this. I find I am not getting an IP address from the hotspot to the Tom Tom. More investigation needed. I almost guarantee it is an Apple thing!

There is a problem connecting to the iPhone but it is not Tom Tom’s fault. It used to work then Apple changed their Bluetooth security functionality on the later OS. It is not just affecting Tom Tom devices. The cynic in me tells me it is something Apple are doing to keep connectivity proprietary. A workaround to get live data, e.g. Traffic, is to connect wirelessly to your iPhones wireless hotspot. Data usage is minimal so you shouldn’t run up a data bill.

The problem I need to solve is that members of the club will email me a GPX file, that route will have to be followed exactly by the riders. There will be way points and often at least one stop. Is there a way to to import the GPX file and then use it as either a Route or a Track which the sat nav will not deviate from? If I understand correctly from your video, If I use tracks then it will not re-route me if on the day of the ride there is a diversion? Could I switch to route at that point until I am back on the track and then switch back to track to continue following the track exactly? Sorry if this seems long winded.

  • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff

    @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff

Switching between the two en-route will be tricky and is not really practical. The changes experienced by users of a route are due to 1) different map sources when used in the panning of that route. This is why planning apps like MyRouteApp have a comparison feature between Garmin and Tom Tom planned routes which highlights these differences. Placing more waypoints at these variations brings them together so both users have the same route/track. So without such care a route planner can generate a GPX file route OR track which will can be different for multiple users, e.g. Tom Tom, Garmin, Harley Nav system etc. 2) Also, the planner needs to tell the users what preferences they set when planning, e.g. avoid motorways, avoid tolls etc. A difference in these settings between the planning software and the actual Sat Nav device will lead to discrepancies. One could take a motorway between waypoints and the other avoids motorways. If a way is blocked the track can have difficulty as it will just try and get you back to the track, this could be problematic and you need a sense of your direction about you to know to run on a few miles rather than doggedly follow the Sat Navs suggestion to get back on track. Being able to zoom in and out of the map on the Sat Nav helps tremendously in this regard. In summary, different Sat Nav users will see different routes and tracks unless the planner has taken great care to compare the two and adjust for the differences. Not an answer you probably wanted, there are variables out of your control and you are at the mercy of the person that planned the route/track.

Hello. please help me find and download POI objects for this navigator. I also noticed that not all roads are on the navigator maps.

If not all toll roads are on the maps that's up to Tom Tom of course. Hopefully they pick them up on any map updates, they can lag a fair bit. You can use POI lists from any supplier, they are all over the web. See instructions for loading them here download.tomtom.com/open/manuals/Rider_Wi-Fi/html/en-gb/index.htm#ImportingacommunityPOIlist-MyDrive-CONNECTED.htm

Great explanation. Thank you. Is there a way to export a route? (not track)

Yes, I use MyRouteApp and you can save as an ITN file which retains the way points. You have to transfer via a PC to an SD card and import into the Tom Tom. When I create a journey now I save in both formats so I have a route and a track.

Hi Terry, hope you can shed some light on this, wired my rider 550 into bike, paired to my freedconn helmet via bluetooth, planned a route, pressed the lets go, she announced my time of arrival so thought all is ok, but then fell silent? no voice directions atall! the route showed on screen, but no voice atal, driving me nuts now! tried everything including all settings, volume etc, to no avail. Any ideas would help please if possible. Thanks. Tony

Check out the settings. Voice instructions on the Sat Nav and Navigation voice instructions are two different things I think. Go to the "quick settings" from the home screen, it is a little dotted icon top left of screen, and make sure voice instructions icon does not have a line through it, I bet it does. The icon to the left is the general system speaker, I bet that doesn't have a line through it and that is why you can hear the arrival time. That is my guess, other than that do you have a phone connected too? I find having a phone, Sat Nav and Headset all connected pretty flaky and I gave up on that a good while back. Go to the Tom Tom website for the user manual for advice on how to connect three devices, there are specific recommendations on which way to do it for best results.

Just caught this video and thanks for the explanation. Been looking for something like this for a while. If I use the MYDRIVE to design my route and I use the export over wi-fi and a feature in MYDRIVE called 'Send Destinations' does that send a route or a track and what does the 'send destinations' actually do? Many thanks just subscribed to see what else I can learn about my Tom Tom Rider 550.

I don't think it works quite like that. When you are in a route design in MyDrive you have probably seen the option switch "Synch this route as a track with my devices" which does send the track automatically. If you are sending a destination you are just sending a single point. You can build up often used destinations using the My Places tab and creating favourites in MyDrive (but not in MyRouteApp)

@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff Does this transfer method only work for android as when I plug my 550 into my Macbook computer it does not come up as a media device like yours. Therefore I cannot transfer my files from my computer to the SD card as it is not seen by my Macbook. When I say import, it refers to TomTom Rider 550 Internal Storage 'TomTom container storage' and you cannot reference the SD card. I think when you format the SD card it prevents this transfer. Might be more of a computer question rather than a TomTom question but I have been trying for several hours now to perform the transfer from my computer of a route to my 550 and cannot get past this point. Any guidance would be much appreciated. Regards Peter

@@Omsracer1 - sorry Peter, I’m not a Mac guy but you can just plug the SD card into the Mac separate from the Tom Tom. As long as it sees that as regular storage you can transfer the file to that and plug it back into the Sat Nav. Connect back to the Mac to instigate the import routine. See if that works for you.

What if you mis a waypoint?, does it sent you back to the latest waypoint, or to the next one?

It doesn't handle missed waypoints as well as Garmin I will say. I have tied myself up on the odd occasion. If this happens you can close the route and reselect it then opt to start navigating from a particular waypoint.

  • @christophermellor9236

it routes to the missed waypoint and you can either restart the route (starting at the reqquired next waypoint) OR you can "Skip Waypoint" - this works fine for 1 or two when following your own route but if you are on a route that someone else has provided and you have many waypoints to skip (maybe they are poorly placed for example) it's not really viable.

It is. It is just the maps that are different. One is Europe only and the other is the World, otherwise the units are the same.
