I'd put this in the 'best covers ever' category

I am not really into covers that much, generally speaking. BUT this version is one of those few I never get tired of. It is an outstanding stripped back piano version, pure and perfect. No frills to distract you from the great and sad lyrics that Tom manages to sing so perfectly. Sometimes you just need a piano or a guitar and a magnificent voice and it's pure magic.

I love how Tom's voice fits to the lyrics and the message of the song... A great tune!!!

Springsteen is a magnificent lyricist. Until I really listened to the words here, I thought it was just another pop song. Oh no. It's a beautiful tale of a man down on his luck.

Absolutely breathtaking stuff from the beautiful dulcet tones of Mr Tom Smith. LEGEND! Editors are my favourite band and DITD is one of my all time fav tunes, this beats the original hands down. Makes me want learn the piano and knock this version off as my own!

This is amazing, I love it. This song has the most beautifully sad lyrics, I love Springsteen's original version but always wondered what a more sombre slow version would have been like, and this is it, perfection.

+Raymond Bos i agree the original melody is too upbeat for the lyrics, mumford and sons do a good version too but this is my favorite. I love the editors though so im biased.

theguitarmy not 100% sure but the best I can come up with it's in the key of G and for the opening chords is that i Think it's GMajor (no5th) played G2 G3 D4 & Eminor11(no5th) Played E2 G3 A3 D4, and the other chords are Aminor CMajor and DMajor, no doubt someone else with more talent than me will be along to say I'm not quite and/or improve on this .

Blame's version is WAY better. Far more sincere. Incidentally, back in the day Tom Smith's band Editors, Snowfield, The Pride used to support the guys in Blame!
