Tom Rush at Symphony Hall - "A New Year" 1983

From my collection of off-the-air recordings on VHS cassettes. This concert was aired by PBS stations on January 7, 1983. Tom's guest performers included Emmylou Harris, David Bromberg and David Buskin & Robin Batteau.

Emmylou's version of "Pancho and Lefty" is undoubtably the best cover of the song.

The high note she hits on the second fourth chord (G when played in D) of each verse sends chills down my spine, and make me wonder why I ever try to sing that one myself.

Before there was James Taylor, there was Tom Rush, essential singer/songwriter and interpreter of James, Joni, Jackson, etc. Rockport Sunday was the first open tuning songs I learned. So many great tunes. No Regrets is a beautiful song and tribute to the wonderful women in my life, the ones who left, and the one who stayed. Thanks for sharing this.

I watched Tom perform in a small venue in South Paris Maine, back in either 1981 or 1982. It was a great time that I will always remember.

Take a Little Walk with Me was one of the very best albums of the '60s. It showed the many sides of his talent and warm voice. Money Honey through Galveston Flood. His Chuck Berry inspired On the Road Again rocked and the guitars of Bruce Langhorne and Al Kooper were exceptional.

Damn! Thank you pianopappy! Been trying to get Tom to release this show for years now, but it seems the station that broadcast it originally wouldn’t agree. I hope this can stay up forever because this was a wonderful concert! My Betamax copy was so worn that I couldn’t get as good a copy as you did. Those of you who see this show, go to Tom’s web page and get a vinyl copy of this show...not all songs on it, but a great recording nonetheless. Thanks again!

@@pianopappy It is but it doesn't include the entire concert so that might make for an odd sounding video. (www.discogs.com/Tom-Rush-New-Year/master/471330)

Tom is still putting out albums and doing shows. He has a Patreon page where you get to see him do a couple of songs each week. I pay a bit more to get a sort of useful lyrics sheet and occasionally a special recording. Usually has guest -- Matt Nokoa, Tom Paxton, and other folks.

Hey pianopappy, do you have an hour-long set of Ray Charles on Austin City Limits in 1980? It has the Southwest Texas Public Broadcasting Council logo, funding credits, Austin City Limits Season 5 opening sequence, as well as Lickona's introduction.
