Honestly, the main thing that I see as a problem with the film is Tom and Jerry being friends. It is a unique idea for one film as they have teamed up in the shorts to defeat a common foe. But my problem is that every single Direct-to-DVD film (apart from Blast off to Mars, the Magic Ring, and the Fast and the Furry) has them teaming up to fit the plot because the random team up characters say so. Hell, in “meet Sherlock Holmes”, the detective says “and you two shall have to get along for the sake of this investigation”.

The house fire scene perfectly encapsulates what is wrong with the film: actual danger. In the show they were faced with multiple accounts of near death experiences but it never caused any real harm and they were always able to walk away unchanged. Therefore it was always funny and never emotionally harmful or frightening. In the film, however, we see them in danger that could kill them and they act as afraid as if they thought that they might die. This immediately changes it from slapstick to actual violence.

They could've done something like, Tom and Jerry fighting. Then they eventually get angrier and angrier at each other because they keep on ruining each others day when they are focused on other things besides fighting each other. Then, Tom convinces a bunch of cats and Jerry convinces a bunch of mice to fight against each other. It all builds up to some slapstick war around the city and Tom and Jerry should mess with the humans a bit, too. It might've not work, but it could've done a little better the abomination that is "Tom and Jerry: The Movie".

They used to regularly show Tom and Jerry cartoons on cartoon network so I've seen just about every cartoon multiple times as a kid. They showed this movie on TV and I literally changed the channel the moment they started talking. I instantly knew this wasn't the same Tom and Jerry I knew and loved.

A Osei-Kofi EXACTLY. Ironic theatrical films are usually much better while DTDVD films are cheaper yet the DTDVD movies are better than this shit.

Yeah that could have been funny or clever to hear Tom and Jerry talk as a one off joke but not for an entire movie! Just like when Tom did actually speak in the original cartoons, it's fine for humorous scenes such as the Zoot Cat episode from 1944.

I almost frickin JUMPED when I heard them talk. Yeesh, the blood is, uh, less noticeable, but TALKING?!?!?! NO!!!! Nice review, as always.

I owned this movie. I remember seeing the VHS while tossing stuff out around ten years back. I have no memory of this movie to the point that them speaking made me go "WHAT?!!" fairly loudly.

This is why I never liked the Looney Tunes’ episodes when Wile E. Coyote hunts Bugs Bunny. I get that it would be awkward if he didn’t talk since Bugs can talk, but it’s just too weird.

This is the first time I’ve seen somebody talk about that line and not mention that it was used as a sample for a song

I actually LIKED hearing Tom and Jerry talk. I can’t really describe the feeling of seeing (or in this case, hearing) the answer to a question you always had. ... Don’t worry. That’s the only part of the movie I’m defending here.

And somehow the rest of the Tom and Jerry Movies are 60 minute long masterpieces because they don't allow them to talk but the story is still told by the dialogue from the other characters like the original cartoon was.

@@kyleandrade6140 It not only goes against what the source material is like, it's also a poor way to keep kids' attention span going. That's not good. Kids like to have visual storytelling to appreciate the film's tone and atmosphere.

“HOLY CRAP! THEY TALKED! THEY ACTUALLY TALKED!”

That scene made me cry. 3:35.

Potentially Better Film Concepts for Tom and Jerry: 1) The studio gives them the boot, they are all about 'talkies' now...they end up getting toons from the age of shorts all together to form a union, kids wont know or care who they are, but the adults would get a smile from seeing them all together...they journey together, have adventures (where the OTHER characters talk, NOT T&J) and people along the way fall in love with them all over again which makes them popular...the studio begs to have them back to make a movie... 2) Tom and Jerry get into a massive fight, go their separate ways...have adventures individually for a bit until they realize how much they miss attacking one another, then are reunited at the end, happy to be back driving each other crazy...admittedly, not a great idea, as they would be apart most of the time...but STILL better than the dreck film we got. 3) Tom and Jerry win tickets to their favorite TV show, one where contestants engage in pranks and violence for humor against one another...they must get to Hollywood for the taping, have adventures along the ay (but NEVER TALK)...they miss the show being filmed, but realize that the abusive trip they had along the way was better than their show, and head home for more abuse and slapstick, grateful for their antic filled lives antagonizing each other... Again, maybe not the best ideas, but admittedly, these WERE just off the top of my head, and at least T&J WOULDN'T TALK (or SING...by the way, every time TNC started in with "...Shut up. SHUT UP....SHUT UP!!" at the songs, I was expecting him to use that George C Scott clip from Hardcore..."Turn it off...TURN IT OFF!!")

Great ideas. I have my own idea. Tom and Jerry keep fighting, and are kicked out of their home by their owners. They try to think of a way to get rich quick, and discover some sort of contest that will pay 1 million dollars. They constantly try to get in each other's way, while also encountering characters like Droopy and Spike. Not a great idea, but still better than the actual movie NC reviewed.
