Permission is just control, dude. And ramp is usually a mid-range strategy taking advantage of the greater efficiency of a higher curve, although it can also be seen as a form of combo.

Ramp is it's own archetype that seeks to use early loss of tempo to rech "Past the curve" and play bombs ahead of time. I think it is it's own archetype. Permission is just control like you say. Prison is permanent based control.@@NXTangl

@@brandonguffey5959 No, prison is to combo as control is to mid-range. Control is about saying no to everything your opponent does with one-to-one answers until you eventually win, prison is assembling a lock that says no to everything your opponent does once it's assembled.

"Which of these archetypes should I play?" ALL OF THEM!! The more you learn about how everything works the more you respect the game and your opponents.

I still come back to this video years & years after having discovered this channel & Magic. This helped make Tempo my favorite archetype in Magic, and I often come back to this video whenever I want to make a new tempo deck or changes to my cube. Thank you for your work, Professor.

Great video: i think i finally "get" what midrange is.

Moreover, I love your subject presentation. It provides accessible depth to a returning player like me. I dabbled with MTG at a younger age and subsequently alienated my friends and family by being too good. Your content is, as of yet, the best way for me to broaden my understanding of the game and to prepare for competitive play.. Once again, bravo.

I can't stress enough how much these videos mean to me. As someone fairly new to magic (my first FNM was last month) I am learning so much about deckbuilding and piloting my brews. Thank you Professor!

Amonkhet was a great block to rejoin the game. With its Egyptian theme, it created a great cat tribal deck (my favorite to play). Ixalan looks like a lot of fun with pirates and dinosaurs too. I am also looking forward to the new pre-release!

Thank you for clarifying those two archetypes. I had no idea what the difference was between tempo and mid-range; now I think I can learn to deck build a little bit more easily.

I'm simply in love with your videos! The content is great, well presented and fun to watch

It's crazy how I see this channel suuuuper late after I'm already into magic I started playing magic in 8th grade (I'm in my first year of college now) and I remember I built a shitty, cheap B/W Tribal Warriors deck to kill off creatures that I didn't like and keep biting at my opponent's life. Now, I made that Tribal Warriors a quasi-midrange/tempo deck based to path creatures out, buff and synergize with each other, gain life while swinging, and push pivots when I get the chance. I'll put a decklist if anyone wants it, but it's a big achievement of mine, and I even have it enshrined with a huge MTG-loving teacher of mine back at my High School who had recreated the deck and keeps it named and labeled as my own, personally built deck, which took 4-5 years to make.

Wasn't the whole point of this video to say you cant have a Midrange/Tempo deck, and that it's either one or the other rather than both?

i rarely play MTG other than EDH occasionally, but I still watch you to keep myself a little updated on the game and the meta as it changes. much love

well they are crap, so I don't think they matter for anything, Pirates could be a tempo deck if Mono-red isn't too dominate. Vamps are also garbage, and Dino's aren't really a tribe so much as a ramp deck.

Would you consider doing a Tolarian Tutor centered around tribal? It strikes me as a topic that someone such as yourself could really unpack in a deep and surprising way.

New to magic here! I really like tempo, and I *think* I stumbled my way into a prototype tempo deck around using Dread Presence, Vampire of the Dire Moon, and this other vampire card that’s all about draining and healing- setting my opponent back while pulling me forward.

I really enjoy this series,keep it up prof.

So i have been playing MTG since 1998.. And even i find this show interesting. You are able to put into solid thoughts an words elements of play i know o n an instinctual level but don't have the words for myself.

Excellent video. will fully admit that I didn't understand the differences between these decks, as well as why my own deck (Merfolk) was considered to be a tempo deck vs an aggro deck

Great video, man. I've been tinkering with my tempo deck (on a budget) for a while now and well, tuning and piloting them is really hard, in my opinion. Nevertheless, keep up the good work, prof!

This is undoubtedly going to come off as weird or unnecessary, but it stood out enough to me to mention it: very professional suit and tie in this video, Professor! The colors are more serious and smart in my opinion. On that note, your hair was on point, too. Appearance aside, this video was very insightful. My favorite archetype is Mid-range, but I think I fell into that camp of not being able to adequately identity and describe it in a coherent expression. Thanks for clearing that up. Hey Prof. I am an avid follower of your channel. This series has become an excellent resource for me as I attempt to improve my game. I'm a homebrewer and I was hoping you could discuss some of the finer points of constructing your own decks and having them actually succeed in in a competitive meta. with many fringe decks popping up and dominating smaller metas, do you think there's room for a wild new deck to suddenly hold its own within modern?

This is my first Tolarian Tutor video. I just wanted to say that I really like the new opening.

I would like to see a playing strategy video about phases, when to play different types of cards, planning and how to play quicker. Also would be good to see something about combat, determining when is best to save for blockers or attack and combat tricks. Special mention for what to do in these scenarios when playing against different archetypes already mentioned would be a bonus. btw I love these videos! Is there a way to get a Tolarian qualification by watching them and perhaps sitting an exam? ;-)

Ramp next one? Ramp and midrange are my go-to decks in standard. So fun to drop huge threats quickly and im there like "deal with this or you die in a few turns."

Hey Professor, I would love to see a video on your opinions about the different tribes of Ixalan. For example: How do you feel about the new merfolk?

I recently picked up cards for a dimir pirate Tempo deck inspired by one featured by sbmtg - I really like how it plays, but I can tell I am not playing it to it's fullest. I find that I am torn between aggressive mulligans so I can play aggressive and disruptive elements as soon as possible but also terrified about running out of steam too quickly. I was looking at various graveyard reclaiming effects or card draw effects to alleviate this, but I am still a bit torn- especially since having the excess mana to play a non-aggressive card to regain steam feels like it loses me tempo.

After what you just said, I realized I was never a control player, I am a Midrange player. Tempo sounds very funf, I might try that style of deck someday very usefull video.

Hi there! long time player (started with Portal, Sixth Edition, Urza Saga and Mercadian Masques in grade school) have been on a hiatus off and on (mostly off) since Kamigawa block. Your videos have been a great resource as far as getting caught back up into the game! I would like to see a video explaining the deck archetypes names and what they mean. Terms like 'jund', "grixis", etc make little sense to me in terms of describing a deck type to me. I have picked up on segments of lore but this doesn't do much to explain why these decks are named as such. I think there are plenty of MTG players out there that wonder the same question. I hope you consider my idea for an episode! Cheers

Jund and Grixis aren't deck types, they are just color combinations (named after the fractions ("shards") in Alara).

I made a WU Aggro deck at my M19 Draft.

When you hold your jacket it reminds me of William Hartnell's Doctor from Doctor Who.

My favorite tempo deck is Grixis Delver I find that it hits all the right notes and can often steal a win.

Can you cover an episode on The Stack along with example abilities that do not use it (eg - Morph)?

I want a Tolarian Tutor episode on the banlist. Please share with me some tips and how to react to a ban, preparing for possible bans, and what to do after a ban. If Death's Shadow is going to get banned in Modern, then how should I prepare for a meta without Death's Shadow? Should a Standard or Modern player with a smaller budget only buy tier 1.5 - 2 decks and avoid tier one decks in order to not get hit by the ban hammer? Thank you.

I guess you've been asked before for this, but I guess I'd like to see examples of this archetypes applied to current meta game un standard and modern, for example now there is a tier-1 mono blue tempo deck which is really interesting. I mean tempo competitive decks don't appear really often in the meta, so it might be worth it to review one of these in something like magic arena.

Would you do a video with more exposition on "synergy decks" and "tribal decks"? plz. :)
