    i was in japan a month ago and gotta say, this 3 suggestions are HUGE, specially skipping the skytree observation deck, too expensive for what it is considering there's cheaper (and sometimes free) alternatives. Excellent video and greetings from Mexico

    I've been going to Japan twice a year for 10 years. In my experience, the types of tourists who get scammed or trapped are usually the (rich?) backpackers who avoid normal commercial places like the plague and would ABSOLUTELY do anything in their power to find these hole-in-the-wall, hidden, no-one-knows-about places. Once, inside a 7-11, I overheard two American (yes, I could tell from their accents) backpackers talking to each other about getting scammed in this obscure cafe located in the woods of some mountain. However, they sneered at the convenience store's food, saying none of them were appealing to eat because they are so mundane and "basic bitch food". So they bought a plain loaf of bread and shared it as they used their phones to look for "unique, quirky" places to eat. I think that was the most bizarre tourist thing I've ever seen. I think the stubborn pursuit of hole-in-the-wall places is equally dangerous as these "commercial tourist traps".

    Went to Japan 3 weeks ago and passed by all 3 of these place: Skytree I walked by but it was too early and they were not open so I didnt go. Takeshita street I didnt even bother checking out due to the large number of people in it (i was in Meji Jingu). Golden Gai was full of Nigerians harassing foreigners, I walked around, and left quickly. Walked about 4 blocks to a Batting Center and spent around an hour and a half there. Really fun.

    Those Nigerian touts are just unrelenting. I had one follow me for 2 and a half blocks before finally convincing him I wasn't looking for what he was selling.

    As much as i love Harajuku, yes that place is overrated, if you're going to japan just for that place alone, then you're really missing out, i always recommend going to the more traditional places as an addition for your trip, kyoto for example is very fascinating, as someone who is a huge fan of anime stuff & merchs, i found myself having more fun time in places like kyoto, golden gai sounds like it would be an interesting experience, so i hope i can visit it too sometimes in the near future, thanks for your awesome tips ShoMeJapan :)

    Tokyo Metropolitan Government building was great, and now that it has a light show, even better for a night visit. Also went to Sunshine 60 Observatory which is not crowded at all and was only ¥700 (more on weekends and busy periods). The windows are smaller at Sunshine 60 though. We found Togo Shrine by accident as we didn't want to walk back up Takeshita Street after getting to the end. It was a very nice change.

    Recently subscribed to your channel. Great helpful information. Also we are arriving in Tokyo on December 22 to 29. Planning to visit places like Shinjuku, Shibuya, Asakusa, Akihabara, Setagaya, Chiyoda, Chuo, Ikebukuro/Toshima, Minato, Setagaya and Sumida. 1. How much should I put approximately in the Suica IC Card for 7 days visiting these various places 2. Are there places in these areas where I can exchange dollars to Yen, if needed 3. Is the Keikyu Airport Line crowded at around 5PM on December 22, what time is rush hours Thank you for your help and any advise that you can provide will be appreciated.

  • @ke2

    @ke2

    If you only are using your IC card for only trains, I would recommend around ¥15,000 for a week. Haneda Airport has a currency exchange booth with good rates when you get out of exit from customs. ATMs at convenience stores also have good rates, but it's best to have a card that doesn't have ATM and foreign transaction fees. Rush hour in the evening in Tokyo starts around 5pm. It shouldn't be super packed on the Keikyu Airport Line, but will likely be if you transfer.

    Thank you for subscribing ! It’s depends on where you go in 7days. I also recommend you to charge around 10000yen to 15000yen. You can also use Suica card at convince store, vending machines. So if it’s too much balance on your card you should use it those places. Yes! There are many places. You can exchange even at family mart which is 24/7. Rush hour is usually 8:00-9:30,17:30-19:00. Since end of the year it might be busy than usual but not like crazy I guess😊

    For Osaka, Dotonbori is overrated and overcrowded. After 6pm on a weekend, you can barely walk through there. Food is not that great or special compared to anywhere else in Japan. Unless you need to see the Glico man sign, avoid it. For Kyoto, it's Nishiki Market. There's thousands of people packed into that narrow back alley all day long.

    I loved Tokyo Skytree, just bought my ticket in advance and went right up. I was there first thing in the morning on a Monday. Harajuku would have been a total waste if it wasn't for Meiji temple, way too crowded, too many touts and it seemed like a tourist trap. I wasn't super impressed with Shinjuku at night either. Touts everywhere and it felt like I was going to get scammed. Good video!

    Omoide Yokocho by Shinjuku station is overpriced. The food portion is small with high price. Plus the cover charge cost. I’m betting it is the same for all of the other old villages with bars in Tokyo.

    The Tokyo Skytree is spectacular. Best view in the city by far. But yes, I totally recommend going early on a weekday, because it gets VERY crowded. Takeshita Street in Harajuku is totally skippable. But the Meiji Shrine across the street is beautiful, so it's worth it if you want to browse souvenirs for 20 minutes. Golden Gai in Kabukicho is impressive to walk through, but all the Nigerian touts harassing tourists to try to get them into their scam clubs gets really tiring after about 10 minutes. The police really should start cracking down on those a**holes. They really ruin the experience.
