Tokyo Joypolis / Gekion Live Coaster Review | Odaiba, Japan
For this review, we're combining the park review and the coaster review into one, due to the small size of the park. Tokyo Joypolis is an indoor theme park home to only two rides, one of which is a launched indoor spinning coaster that features an inversion!

Taylor: * says that have many arcade machines/games * Park: Have "SEGA" in the entrance
Not to mention all the Golden Horse spinners that go upside down.
Imagine the hang time on this coaster
You forgot to give the coaster a rating

I'd probably give it a 5 out of 10. Unique for what it offers, but not anything I'm dying to go ride again. The actual coaster part is pretty underwhelming tbh. Cool idea, but not thrilling enough to strongly recommend.

This was very entertaining!
Tokyo Joypolis is also Sega's theme park. You might see a Sonic mascot costume there!
I did not knew about this place, i only knew Gekion excisted! Awesome video Taylor!
Japan's society has a pretty strict no photo/video policy during shows/lives. IMO it most likely has to do with showing respect to the artists/performers and a lot of artists prefer not to have their content uploaded all over the internet. I was walking around the Tokyo Dome after riding Thunder Dolphin and there was a mini live going on and they had the big signs with the no photography photos on it.
Nice review, didn't know it was THAT small. Won't miss it though :D About the first spinning coaster - or more exactly Time Traveller not being the first, don't forget Golden Horse's Super Spinning Coaster Model. They also feature a heartline roll and the first one of those ("Stunning Roller Coaster) opened in september 2017, half a year before Time Traveller, which therefore was the third if I don't forget something :D
I've been here! Both the rides mentioned were pretty fun. The other ride was like a weird hybrid between tony Hawk and a Rhythm game but it was a ton of fun (even if I was mediocre at the Rhythm aspect). I also highly recommend going to the Onsens just down a few roads from this place and the mall. I went on a very rainy day and the ambiance and the baths were incredible. Also the Japanese food is incredible. Even fast food has some uniqueness to it. Highly recommend a day out in Odaiba.
Great Video can You do a Video about the weirdest and i mean weirdest Coasters You saw or rode?
From my experience there I found it's good for about half a day. Personally I found the interactive arcades on the second floor (i.e. Transformers, Sonic, and a few others) can be considered rides themselves (Transformers even has inversions!) There's also a VR experience up there, too. Additionally there's also a scavenger-hunt like attraction that takes you around the entire park that while I failed the challenge was pretty neat as well.
This park looks awesome just based around technology and interactive games alone :)
Went back in 2014 when the coaster was a Zombie shooter 👌 Did you explore the upper floors? They've got a free-roaming multiplayer VR zombie survival (Had a Psycho-Pass theme in 2014), a few 4D rides and an awesomely themed Sadako horror attraction.
We need more interactive indoor theme parks like this in the states
I've been here and they had more than just 2 rides although most were screen based ones. On the other floors they had a lot of arcade flat rides as well as a few simulator style ones. It was a fun park and i'd recommend checking it out especially if you're into arcades. If you do go though I'd get the night ticket - it gives you access to unlimited rides on everything (all the simulator style rides, all the arcade stuff that doesn't give you tickets (they have a lot of cool stuff here) and the two main rides posted here) for the last few hours of the night From this review it sounds like Taylor didn't go to the other floor of the joyopolis as they had a ton of fun stuff in there. Agree with the overall review of the Geikon live coaster though! It was a fun and interesting experience but not really rerideable. I had unlimited rides and didn't ride anything twice. The other ride that Taylor didn't ride was fun if you like spinning rides. It kinda felt like a sky fly ride but on a half pipe track and a lot more gamey. the game itself was a rhythm game (most games in there are ) and was pretty fun. Overall i'd recommend joyopolis - make sure to check out all they have though especially on the other floors. It was a ton of fun for the few hours I was there and I'll likely go again if i'm ever in tokyo.

Btw. I wrote this ass drunk and I have no idea how.
I love this place.
I was July 2017 there and I love this Place ❤️ they have a Inital D Arcade Simulation Ride with the actual Cars and sooo many other awesome Things
I got a pass for unlimited attractions and spent most of a day at Joypolis in 2018. There's way more than just "two rides".
I understand why they didn't want cameras. If people filmed it, it would spoil the show.
24 mph. 1 mph less than the average residential street speed limit.
I went in 2015 and I remember there were a few simulators, which were surprisingly fun. Also a horror walk through attractions which was so much better than the coaster!!
When I went it was specifically for the initial D game with the actual cars. We got the pass that gave you ride on the coaster, the half pipe thing, initial D game and some tokens for the arcade games. I had a blast the coaster was so much more fun then I expected. It had a mini rhythm game for an anime tie in when I was there and it was fun playing against the random girls that were with us on the coaster. Would definitely recommend going there is your ever in Odiba, ircc there was a legoland like park close by as well, and it is like a 3min walk to the gundam statue
In the mall there was a toy section that has a Dododonpa Model Car, which you can buy on amazon
Been so often at Odaiba, even been to Decks a few times......why was I not aware there was a rollercoaster?
Here in Brazil we have a similar ride to this one at Hot Zone in Rio. It's a pretty good ride tbh
there was footage of an event in 2015 and it has projections in it and it was a concert btw
this coaster looks cool I wonder which other Japan coasters are left for review, is Thunder Dolphin one of them?

@@CoasterStudios What's the worst coaster you rode in Japan, and was it worse than Blue Tornado?
Gerstrauler needs to make more of these types of spinners
Wait you went to odaiba and didn’t visit the real size gundam across the mall ?
Yeah, they have quite a few other motion simulators. Like an upgraded DisneyQuest. Fortunately wasn’t busy when we went so we were able to do four or five of these simulators and they were all pretty fun! This isn’t really a review of the park itself, as you kind of suggested there wasn’t anything here except the two rides on the floor and some arcade games. Just my two cents.
Um... did you go upstairs? There’s more rides on the top floor. There’s a lot more then just 2 rides. (Granted all the others are simulators, but they are still rides)
I'm hoping when this covid stuff is over, Tokyo Joypolis is my second go to (Tokyo Disneyland and Disney sea is my first go to) I really want to go here along with disney, I want to go on my birthday cause I share a birthday with Sonic which is June 23rd, I really want to it's sooo cool
This in current day has been turned into a rhythm game roller coaster (it’s fun you compete in the rhythm game while riding)
PARODY?
And also the several golden horse spinners with rolls
You know, Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket has enough mid course break runs that they could make it cooler by adding a game. They could bring the trains to a full stop at each break and add some sort of screen and interactive component (it is Universal Studios Florida after all) and put the break runs under some type of cover to keep out the rain. They already let you pick a song so adding a guitar hero style game would make sense. This would make up for the fact that the break runs currently kill the momentum and people would go crazy about it.
@george-pi5mo

the whole point of the brakes is to allow the train behind it to go. if it stops on every single one, the capacity will go from okay to terrible.
@zacg_
4 жыл бұрын
@@george-pi5mo but it already stops at every break run. It would just come to a complete stop and remain there for a few seconds. That coaster doesn't move past the break runs without the breaks operating. It would be no different from most dark rides in this regard. It would work in a similar way to any other coaster with theming (see Gringotts and the Mummy at the same park.) Adding the game component would only minimally affect the wait times but it would fix the basic problem of Rip Ride Rockets.

@@george-pi5mo it doesn't need to be a full stop though, the usual MCBR crawl is enough. Conceptually, doesn't even need to slow down if it's target-shooting or similar

On my list for japan 2025 are Disney Parks, Hollywood Studios, Nagashima Spa Land, Fuji-Q, Tokyo Dome City. Do you know of any other coasters that like the ones in Tokyo Dome City are centrally located and are worth a quick visit?
@CoasterStudios
3 ай бұрын
Yomiuriland is a good one worth visiting that is pretty easy to access from Tokyo!
I been there before 5 year ago for a trip and the whole theming was different , the coaster was a zombie shooter , and the swings were themed around attack on Titan, overall I had fun .
Ah yes, my 2 favorite hobbies, rhythm games and coasters.
Maybe I'm just not creative enough about it, but seems like "great coaster experience" and "interactive onride game" don't go hand-in-hand. A game during an awesome ride would either distract from the physical experience, or you'll be too indulged in the latter to not abandon the game. And if the onride game highly enhances the ride experience, your ride probably isn't physically exciting to begin with. Then again, it could be done at places separate from the thrill segments, like Gekion does, or during the myriad block brakes of a Universal/Disney calibre high-capacity ride, pre-lift sections, a lift itself, a 'shed', or indoor intermezzos like Takabisha's indoor sections. That could make a sweet addition. Maybe imagineers could come up with even better solutions to the dilemma.
You didnt go on any of the VR rides or arcades. I spent new years eve there in 2013, It was awesome!

Is this roller coaster a spinning roller coaster? If it’s not a spinning roller coaster I can go for it, but if it is then… I should bring a barf bag I can’t do spinning 🤣 and not the inversion that’s not what I mean like does the cart it’s self spin like a tea cup ride?
You missed out on the transformer game and much more if you only went on those two! Also their haunted walk through attraction was so cool

The only thing that Joypolis is missing are talking mascots and characters actors like the ones in Disneyworld. Characters such as the ones from Sonic, Alex Kidd, Billy Hatcher, Monkey Ball, Vectorman, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter, Ryū ga Gotoku, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Shenmue, Dynamite Deka, Jet Set Radio, House of the Dead, Streets of Rage, Fighting Vipers, Eternal Champions, etc.

Joypolis is awesome, for the arcade and the coaster. It is easily #1 on my international list. Yet again, the arcade and the Sega theming is more important than the rides at this park...
But... why are you saying those are the only two rides tho :/ ? The other ones were closed when you went? I plan on going soon, and the website shows way more than this (like the weird horror 4D simulator or the walktrough..). I was disappointed to see you didn't talk about any of that :(
