considering how much money is being moved there it is amazing how little money is left at the actual location! Actually, replace "amazing" with DISGUSTING in my previous sentence

I lived there back in the early '70's when the BHP coy was known as Mt Newman Mining and the second company was Goldsworthy Mining - the first iron ore company. They were the ones who had the big turning channel dredged, They also had the 15/20 nm channel dredged and surveyed. It was also the first port to have a three station "Decca" navigation system, today I think its all GPS controlled.

I also don't get the hate over the city. I'd still like to have extremely hot temperatures rather than extremly cold ones. So Port Hedland is definitely better than Norilsk in Russia ;)

Port Hedland has been here and established for more than 100 years. Not 40 like this video claims. Karratha was established in the 70's.

If we talk specifics your are correct - I seem to recall that the WA Govt State Ships started just after the First World War. But to compare the port in those days to what is here today is really chalk and cheese.

Companies making millions and millions and port Hedland such a small town with no accommodation no building of homes no expansion or business or schools. The mining industry gives nothing to the town this film is nine years ago and still nothing has changed for the towns people or the aboriginal people. Just a few people making millions of dollars.
