The thing about narcissism is that it does not interfere with the narcissist's function and achievement of their goals, it interferes with other people's functions and goals. And yes it is a survival mechanism. Narcissistic behaviours and defences are normal for toddlers up until early middle childhood, but in adulthood they are primitive defences.

Do they believe their own lies. I don't think so. They just want you to believe it. My husband finally said "what does it matter to you". He had been lying more and more and we catch him in the lies.

This is a real mental illness. A beloved member of my family struggles with delusional thinking and it is SO hard to get them help. Particularly if part of their delusion is that doctors are the enemy, and prescriptions are poison.

As a teenager he was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, but his mental health has declined as an adult, and he was diagnosed with schizophrenia at about 45 years old. It has been such a rough road because he resists help at every turn.

Last part, very good advice. Even on medication they might not stop believing delusions they already had without expert professional help. AND if they don't get help to understand their illness quick enough they might decide the side affects (because they have unpleasant side affects) of the medication aren't worth it and just stop and go back to having delusions.

I see a lot of women like this with love, believing in something that doesn't exist and creating their own reality with nonsense which proves to them he really loves her when he doesn't

This is a scary and sad one. I have a feeling something bad happened in his childhood and pressure from school made him snap

He said his turning point was when he left College. And he was going to be a broker. I think the complexities of that kind of work terrified him. I think he was already becoming delusional. When he asked his mother to come back home he was trying to find a safe place. And then being safe he totally went into the delusions. Schizophrenia and other mental illnesses show up more in the early twenties than at other other time. He could have just been smoking pot. If there is a propensity in genetics for mental illness THC will bring it out. It builds up in the brain cells. Especially in the Young. He could have tried other stuff.

Like for example if someone does a more restrictive life style role plays like bdsm or Gorean I have found that some do actually role play or act it out even in reality. They even told me they did. There are even rooms on imvu where it says you have to be in the actual life style to be in there which is weird.

My mom thinks neighbors put spy cameras in vents to make porn. She thinks the neighbors are drilling and fracking under her house, and neighbors stole her medical record and put them on their pd cast. Oh, three men live in the furnace and talk to her. She went outside at 3 am, believing she needed to sign a contract at the neighbors house. She thinks a doctor told me it was healthy to eat your poop. The list goes on, and im dealing with something daily. She keeps calling the police on the neighbors, and they know she is nuts they just take a report and leave. My mother won't go to a doctor so I don't know what I'm supposed to do.

My friend suffers from delusional disorder, and it's driving me crazy. Nothing like believing he's a cyborg, but he steadfastly believes that 30 yrs ago, his ex did xyz to him (eg she left 2 rooms full of stuff piled floor to ceiling, which he steadfastly believes is "illegal" for him to throw away and is now infested with dead animal carcasses, rat pigeon and fox pee and poo, killer bacteria GC streptococchus, who knows what else because he refuses to get an environmental safety inspection), leaving him supposedly stuck in a miserable life, and there's nothing he can do about his miserable life until she magically returns to rescue him. It is demonstrably demonstrably clear that she doesn't give a s*** what he does with his miserable life. I DO, but he won't listen to me because I call him out on his delusions, and I refuse to enable. She may not even still be alive. But he keeps hopelessly waiting for her. This belief has already almost killed him twice.

One day, religious people will question their delusions the same way we question this kid's delusions.

DMT sometimes gives you these ideas especially doing it in the wrong environment like in front of a computer.

He doesn't come off as being a threat to others or himself. While yes he only drinks water and smoothies, smoothies still provide nutrition. He does eat, but only foods he "knows"/believes have no additives to them because they pose a risk to his human body. A psych hospital wouldn't take him at this stage, only a psychiatrist would help him right now. A first step to that is like Dr Phil pointing out inaccuracies while going along with the delusion. Removing him from his surroundings would be more harm than good, if anything it could reinforce his delusion and cause a greater break; all we see right now is him cracking from reality which is much easier to work with than someone that's completely "broke" or torn from reality. No matter what a Psychiatrist and possibly medications would be the first step.

I like the story plot. Too bad It's not a movie trailer, just some delusional guy.
