Today is Sergei's 18th birthday. Also his first day homeless!

This one wrecked me. I was crossing a street in Salt Lake City and saw Sergei. I asked him if he would like some socks. He responded "I don't have any money", which was the first sign Sergei was new to the streets. I just didn't know how new.
Today is Sergei's 18th birthday. Today is also his first night homeless.
Many of you have asked for more details. I am sorry but I became emotional and didn't get much information. Too me, just the look on his face was enough to feel his pain and get some understanding.
Many of you also asked how you can help. Please support homeless youth organizations like Safe Place [bit.ly/dD3G8C].
I have worked with homeless youth before in Hollywood, but this was my first time with InvisiblePeople.tv. This year's road trip I will be going out with a few homeless youth outreach teams. It's an important story that needs to be told. I just am not sure I am ready. Today my heart was broken.
Please support Safe Place, Covenant House, and similar organizations helping troubled youth. PLEASE!
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZread, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I once came down from my bedroom when my mothers parents were in the house and asked my mother if I may have a biscuit, she said yes and go back to my room, so I took one custard creme biscuit, and went to my room, her parents left after an hour or so, and she came up, with a stopwatch around her neck, and told me what was now going to happen, she put 30mins on the timer, and had boots on (doc martens) and then proceeded to boot me around my room, no let up for 30mins, throwing me around, slamming me into the floor, broke a wooden spoon she had also taken with her off my arse, and semi suffocation with the pillow off my bed, punching and kicking me as often as she could, until those 30mins were over, then she calm as fuck, just walked out..... I asked her why... she said that I was trying to play her off against her parents by making her look bad if she said no to me asking for a biscuit.... oh yeah I used to eat cat biscuits and mouldy bread thrown out by the neighbours for birds and half eaten turnips meant for sheep, and by half eaten, not by humans, but by the sheep... oh yeah, cos you know, I wasnt given much to eat and that going to bed with no dinner was very often a thing too.

@@ruveydazehra5173 my mother is a dumbass, her partner a fair bit smarter, I as an adult, I am convinced that he had persuaded her that I am this bad kid, and needs to go away, by doing this, he could ensure that all the resources could go to his spawn with her, (I have two half brothers, both younger than myself and I do not know them, nor do I want to) he would stand me before him and with the oldest of the two, would pick me apart verbally, too small, too skinny too whatever, to get me to react, so that he could be more violent towards me for being horrible to his kids for getting them to join in, in slagging me off. I was taken into care the day after I turned 11, but a few months before this date, my mothers partner had booted me around bad, from one end of the living room to the other, getting my heel of my left foot to touch the back of my head trying to inflict pain on my left leg, but I win, because when I was just 2 years old, I was run over by a speeding car and struck on the left side thus deadening the nerves of the left side, so I felt very little in that leg, and so I was able to look him in the eye as he was doing this to me at the time, and he saw me looking right into him, and all he could say was "oh look he doesnt even feel the pain anymore" to my mother, he grabbed me up off the couch and threw me into my room and in doing so I looked at him with utter hatred, and he saw this, and said to me.... "anytime you are man enough to come and fight me, I will be waiting for you" he would have been what 36/37 years old and 6 foot tall, and I was what maybe 4.5 foot tall and 10 years old, prolly weighed 4 or 5 stone if that.... as they werent feeding me much right... hah the house went on fire because he came home drunk one time and turned on the cooker in the kitchen and as the house was on fire and I am locked in my room, he gets himself out and his kid (only had the one at this point I think) and my mother, they went next door, and the neighbour was like... . where's XXXXXXX like, and the neighbour told me this years later by the way, "oh I suppose I will go fetch him then", took me out of my room, as I was asleep, by pulling on my t-shirt me out of the room and telling me not to move from the front doorstep and he then went into the neighbours house leaving me there, I didnt figure out what was going on at this point till the fire engine turned up and the firemen were telling me to get away and pulling me away but I was so shit scared of punishment, id run back to the doorstep.

I pushed myself either to death in doing so, or I would become tougher.... and so the weekend I had passed 1st dan, I was on the phone, (they still have the same landline number i think) and the first words from me were.... hi, its me, and I am on my way to you now, get yourself ready because I am wanting my fight, now that I am man enough, and were gonna have a lot of fun,.... correction, I am gonna have a lot of fun, you are not.... my mother in the background could hear me so I guess I was on loud speaker, shouted back... I got made homeless by my mother at 15 because I was naughty sometimes. I know that's not the reason really though, it was because my mother wasn't responsible and shouldn't have had me and my siblings. I was assaulted on the streets, got addicted, broke into people's garden sheds to sleep, etc. Happy ending though, managed to land on my feet, get a job, quit the drugs, and now I live abroad and have a small business. yeah abandoning a child once they’ve reached a certain age... That’s honestly very shallow thinking, aren’t we supposed to care for our children’s wellbeing and support our children through everything? was it all truly to raise children then abandon them? Why instil that into your child as well... I remember a senior of mine from highschool had poor grades and barely graduated he stayed home for 5 years before finding what he wanted to pursue and a solid background such as an entrepreneur he started a small online business and even now has students working for him part time! sometimes it just takes time you don’t hatch an egg and toss the hatchling off the nest and force them to fly that just traumatizes them gives them trust issues and a sour personality maybe independence but they’ll lack dependance and social skills but that just means you didn’t do your best as a parent you sweetened them and ignored them and didn’t prepare them you just abandoned them. There are more humane ways and kinder ways to raise a child, cruelty isn’t always the answer you’ll just instil fear and hatred when we live in a world where we can be kind. There’s many simple ways to make a living just help them achieve them before you leave them empty handed they have no source of income no home and no where to eat they don’t have access to simple things they have no one they can ask help for no one to guide them we can provide for them so why abandon them. Why do we have to be so narrow minded.

Parents can ditch their children at any time if they want to. Current Society just binds you till the child is 18 if you don't want to have any consequences regarding the ditching. On the opposite society binds a child to its parents with no option out except if the parents are abusive or neglecting the child. Parents and children are just people. They don't necessarily have to like or care about each other just because you (society) expect that from them. There is nothing disgusting about it. It's just sad for the child because apparently the parents never told him what he had to expect.

I don’t think most people in the commons realize how much worse the situation is then they think. This kid was basically in some kind of camp or boarding school in a state far away from where he actually used to live, California. once he turned 18 and whatever facility youth he was living in, kicked him out, they kicked him out in this state that he doesn’t even know anyone in. If he was at least in California that he might have a friends couch, he could crash on, but since he’s several states away, he has no resources. If he was at least back in California situation will be slightly less terrible that it is but the fact that you drop your kid off somewhere several states from their home just to wait until they turn 18 and are no longer your problem. That’s even worse.

He joined the Marines, maybe you can do that too -- the Navy, one of the branches.... you can take advantage of tons of veterans benefits, the GI bill, and a lot of free college opportunities after that.... and it's free room and board while you're there, you can at least escape homelessness.... save your money, buy a car when you get out, then you'll always have shelter..... save up at least $3,500--$5,000 and get a good one.... so you can rely on it, not some junker piece of shit $1,800 car.... save up.... you will make enough money to be able to. And go for a job there in the Navy or Air Force, wherever, Army, Marines, which trains you in a job you can do when you leave.... (like electrician, plumber, hvac, machinist, any trade skill.... you can do it when you get out too, so you're not at square one again) The most important thing is high school graduation / GED / HISET (another name for GED).... and then college (community college, then a nearby college within your state).... or a trade school..... In order to get Fafsa (financial aid), you need tax information, so just have the guidance counsellor help you with that. Colleges and institutions are so professional, and helpful.... way more than free handout places who treat you like a number who is low priority.... any place you have to go for handouts is gonna treat you like you're not a priority.... colleges, they help you.... and you have tons of jobs available to you afterwards - get a business degree, and that will be true - not psychology, biology, ___ studies, art, art history.... watch "Hummus best college degrees" on KZread.... make sure you stay off drugs, and write things down, so you can focus and remember things.... do it a lot, do it at Starbucks.... If you want to get a basic job, do it on Indeed, that's where everyone gets jobs.... find places that are hiring, nearby Amazon jobs, etc.... but a good way out is the military, then take it from there.... I'm sure they can help with GED as well, if not, then find a place that does it.... In the meantime, find the local homeless resources - places that help with resources, food stamps, job placement.... get enough money to buy a walmart phone.... look up "donate blood plasma near me", and try to get to one of those places.... of course Salvation Army is another good option, but also look up "free camp sites near me".... that is another possibility, a lot of RV parks.... if you can get a backpack, a few change of clothes, some toiletries, a cheap phone, and a bike, you are set for a while.... hopefully busses are free where you are, but otherwise, a bus pass helps.... Being homeless is not easy.... you need gear : a sleeping bag, or a tent, or umbrella.... sunglasses, hat.... water bottles, sources to get water, bathrooms that are open at night.... a place to shave, a place to shower..... It is way harder than people even think.... And it's not easy to get out of.... that's why if you're 18, join the f*&*** damn military, and then get into a community college - stay at a group home, try Couchsurfing.app.... look on CoolWorks.com.... look up "hummus work remote jobs" on KZread.... just write it all down, and try things.... Best way out is to get a trade, a degree, or a certificate in something -- look up "easiest certificate to get" -- just really try to research it.... And you can succeed. Join the military !

Being a parent... one of the key things parents should be doing is ensuring their children have or learn the skills to be independent self sufficient members of society. Ten years ago this kid was asked about three wishes... really? Wishes? ... and he didn’t even consider wishing he had stayed in school instead of dropping out. Not saying it to be funny but for whatever reason a whole generation of young people, not all but many, were raised without any sense of reality or reason. Study, graduate, work, save. Those who study hard and graduate are better prepared than those who don’t. Those with a work ethic for success do not play hooky from work, or skip & bounce around jumping between employers .. Employers want employees who are dependable, and productive. Not folks who are headaches or self entitled as new hires. Some people who have adult children need to sometimes cut their losses when said offspring is irredeemable, incorrigible, lazy, and gravitates to repeating bad decisions and life choices. I hope this young man was able to change for the better. I hope he learned that “wishes” are for children’s stories not real life. - EDIT to add - A day after this post was originally made. At this time 18 agreed with me. As for those who currently concur with me read on as the trend of those who disagree as this discussion unfolds is disturbing. Many believe I am a heartless jerk. I made a post about a day after this one and addressed issues which seem to indicate many disagree with me with really understanding other issues. I encourage those who do stumble across this post and agree right now to read on to see what is further revealed by myself and those who disagree with my perspective. Concur or not I am curious as to the perspective of others who do agree with mine. Edit 2 - the number of thumbs up has climbed to 26 in just a few hours. Edit 3 - two days after the first time I posted this and the number of thumbs up now up to 47. Odd one actually suggested I had more than 20 accounts to boost my ratings. Ridiculous to think I would have 47 accounts. Those new to this discussion... please read through until you find my update below where I mention - 47 thumbs up -

  • @celinee.9562

    @celinee.9562

    4 жыл бұрын

It's Crazy but if you think about it children used to pay the rent long before 18, in any culture / civilisation ! In native tribes, children become Adults at 12 or 13 and start to Hunt or cook and do all the work adults normally do. And there is no rent in the Forest except paying respect to the elderly and to mother nature. In Europe kids used to be part of the work force from 12 or 14. Working on a farm, or as a domestic. Now things are very different. And we frown upon the parents who just don't '' play their role of parents '' for 20 years or more. Of course i find very harsh to put the kid out in the streets (or in the wild) for their birthday. What i find cruel is to cut ties in a brutal manner. This wouldn't happen in native tribes i guess. At least for the majority of the youth. (some teens are sent away to another tribe for bridal arrangements). Yes i feel sad and angry to hear this young man was roofless and homeless on his brithday, and away from his community without basic ressources for survival. Of course i don't think it's fair. Young natives from native tribes always had their bow and their skills if they were lost or travelling they could build à shelter and Hunt. But surviving in the wild without a tribe .... 😔

So my mom packed a suit case of my clothes and drove me to a women's shelter where i stayed for 2 months before getting on welfare and renting a room in a guys house
