Today I Launched The Sailboat That Has To Take Me Around The World! [Ep 17]
I bought this Marieholm if sailboat without knowing how to sail with the intention of sailing it around the world. Up until today the boat has been laying high and dry on land. Today I finished my last preparations for the boat to be launched into water. At least, I thought I finished all preparations...

1:12 If you want to keep rot out of your deck core, use the drill-fill-drill method: Drill oversized hole, fill with epoxy, then drill the correct size hole for your fastener. Otherwise water WILL get into your core eventually and rot it out.

I sucked in a line into my prop about 7 seconds after I left my slip. Luckily the wind blew me into an empty slip... I have never been that terrified:) What you said at the end is the reason why most boats don't leave the harbor... It's scary man! But like I tell everyone, if you want to sail alone, you have to learn how to sail alone:)

Brilliant, I had an IF boat for 10 years. No matter how far you sail, or where your moor, nobody will have a better or prettier boat than you. Best wishes.

Oh man! You are so right. I tend to get nervous when motoring through the marina, because this engine has bailed on me a few times in critical moments... Also, it has no reverse... so to stop the boat... Let's say that this outboard engine is one of the problems I want to tackle very soon!

Never underestimate how the most basic tasks such as moving around in the marina are magnified 10 fold when you are singlehanding your boat. Not having a deckhand to help with the most mundane of things that are out of your arm's reach, compounds every task. You did perfectly fine and things ALWAYS could have gone worse. As far as the time to tie up the boat, you have to start somewhere and you will get better in time. Practice makes perfect. Dreaming of being on the open water is fine, very little to hit out there. In the marina on the other hand, you are basically playing a pinball game with hundreds of VERY expensive objects everywhere for you to hit. Much harder than 90% of open water sailing.

It is an If yes! Thanks for watching 😁
It gets easier the more times you go out sailing. Getting in and out of a slip can be very scary as most sailboats, depending on keel shape, don't like to manuver well at slow speeds. Yours looks like a full keel boat. Mine was as well, and stearing it into slips at a slow speed was always a bit scary until you did it enough to know how your boat would handle. Takes time. You will master it.

I have IF boat nr 132 which I bought in 2014 from and old man who ordered it new in 1968. It is truly a great boat. Having the engine in the rear hatch can make it hard to steer in small areas (especially reverse) and will slow you down once the sails are up. On the upside, it is more quite. It is more common (especially if you race other IF boats) to put a mount so you can pull the motor up once you do not use it. There is a ton of information and a big community surrounding the IF. Good luck on the journey, don't hesitate to ask question

Thanks so much for watching! 😁 I will be addressing the engine very soon ✌🏼 I will mount it on the back of the boat and close the hole in the hull. A lot of water comes in through this hole in heavy weather… And its also easier to service the engine this way 😁. Thanks again for the feedback!
Fun to watch! 🤙 And a good edit! 💪

It’s ALWAYS scariest where there are other boats you can hit! My boat also only has an outboard motor. Just always make sure you open the vent on the gas tank so that you don’t starve the motor of fuel when the vacuum inside the tank becomes too much.

Step by step you'll make! You just need commitment and perseverance. This reminds me the first times I wanted to go sailing alone on my boat. It was terrifying the moments before leaving and arriving the box. I have my boat not far from yours in Hoorn and the box config is exactly the same. But now... after a few times, it comes naturally and I learned the technique. Sometimes is a bit tricky, especially when the wind is blowing a bit stronger but... that will make us more knowledgeable in almost all situations. Ah! BTW, don't forget your boat is a full keel so... good that you don't have reverse! 😄 it's always a lottery where the boat is going but... on the other hand... how are you thinking to take the boat out of the box? Keep going 😉

Start with coastal sailings. Your IF has many good qualities, withstands harsh weather, behaves well in the water and looks beautiful. But less suitable at sea. All hatches are too weak and leaky, the cockpit too large in case it gets overfilled and drains too slowly.

Im all about low budget sailing when possible, and people have sailed oceans in very small boats. However, for your own well being and comfort, I would suggest buying a bit larger of a boat...something in the 10 meter range at least, with a keel stepped mast and a small diesel in good shape. Having gasoline on a boat is not a great idea. Remember, boats shrink as soon as you are out of sight of land.
