On 9th February 1933, Oxford Union members voted 275 to 153 in favour of the motion 'This House will under no circumstances fight for its King and Country', a result met with outrage from the political establishment. Sir Winston Churchill described the vote as an 'abject, squalid, shameless, avowel', citing it as a reason for Adolf Hitler's later brinkmanship. Ninety years to the day after this motion was first put to the House, would this house still not fight for its sovereign and kingdom?
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

Elwood is apparently according to most who ‘know’ him say he’s a “nice chap”; the in essence he’s right, but he’s talking of intervention, which is antithetical to actually fighting for one’s own country; further the “interventions” in Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Kosovo, Syria, Libya, etc were for regime change to suit the average politicians pocket; none of these countries were a direct threat to us; Russia isn’t a direct threat to us now, the issues they have, like those countries I just mentioned, are THEIRS to sort out, they are simply nothing to do with the west! We need to take heed of what President Eisenhower said in his farewell address to the nation, about “influence so ought or unsought” by the “military industrial complex”; this is all happening now; there was a time where I’d have fought for this King, for the Queen who preceded him, and this country; not any more, nor my sons, because of todays breed of self-seeking politicians who want to involve us in country-sized money-laundering schemes like Ukraine…

Great speech Tobias. But as usual with politicians, you just don't get the point. Fighting for King & Country should mean fighting for the people of this great country not because the miss guided Politicians took their eye of the ball. So now ordinary people have to back up mistakes made by incompetent politicians - leaders. Now we have a war in Ukraine. A war the west could have stopped by simply listening to the stage. Not just America. Instead, Boris tried to save his PM ship by going to Ukraine saying UK will back This Ukraine war. Nobody asked the people of the UK? If they had politicians would have stuck to the MINSK agreement instead of using it to train Ukraine's Azov Nasi group. Not my words but the BBC. the very people that issue out the west propaganda. NO FIGHTING FOR KING & COUNTRY IS NOT FIGHTING BECAUSE THE KING OR POLITICIANS SAY SO. Its because we have a just war to fight for. UKRAINE IS NO SUCH WAR.

No one on earth would be less like General Wingate, than the Anglo American provincial Tobias Ellwood. Wingate's greatest contribution was as a British Army intelligence officer in Palestine he leaked to and assisted the developing Israeli, Jewish resistance and essentially formed the SNS the inchoate Israeli army attracting these services of many of the greatest future military leaders, Generals and Prims .insurers, such as Moshe Dayan and Begin. Ellwood is a simplistic cartoon in comparison.

From my learnt lived experience, they don't look after their service personnel. They don't take responsibility for their own agency when things go wrong, so why should anyone sacrifice themselves for people who don't really care, for a system that doesn't support you. Short of the land itself being attacked and one having to defend the country, I would avoid these people like the plague.

Respect to Tobias Ellwood for his service. However, clearly stating that the Afghanistan Intervention 'was wrong' in attempting to impose Western values on that country and that this was a mistake by politicians and THEN expecting, asking, demanding that young soldiers should NONETHELESS risk their lives and possibly die in such disastrous and ill thought out causes is a nonsense. (Any student of history, indeed anybody with half a brain, knew that Western military involvement in Afghanistan was destined to fail... Even Alexander The Great never conquered Afghanistan...) Great Britain has historically fought SEVEN wars in Afghanistan and lost in all of them...YET this speaker suggests that soldiers, brave serving men and women, should WITHOUT QUESTION lay down their lives for an impossible and ill-thought-through political idea? (No modern GENERAL thought that the West might 'triumph' in the Afghanistan. NOR WERE THEY PERMITTED TO SAY SO PUBLICLY!!!!) Given the subsequent and ignominious withdrawal, would ANYBODY say that the common soldiery were 'duty bound' to fight that unwinnable war? Do the mothers of the fallen think their children died for 'King and Country'??? And if so, was that sacrifice worth it? Afghanistan was no threat to 'King and Country'... Afghanistan under the Taliban maintains an embassy in London. (With full diplomatic priviliges...) Relations with the new Taliban state are 'cordial'... Almost 500 UK servicemen and women lost their lives in the most recent (2001-2014) Afghanistan war. Hundreds more were horribly maimed. THOUSANDS MORE continue to suffer physically and mentally from the aftermath of that conflict... For 'King and Country'???? No. Simply no. xx SF
