I worked in tobacco back in the 50's in the area around Tillsonburg. Long before it became mechanized. I tied and handed leaves for the curing process of harvesting, as well as topping and suckering the plants prior to harvest. This was the way I spent my summers to earn $$ for school.

Hi there. I am curious what it is like to work in this area of work. Are you solely a producer, or do you also partake in making consumer products like cigars with the tobacco you produce? I know that in Canada it may be harder compared to warmer climate countries to grow this stuff year-round, but either way it is interesting to learn about. Thank you for any response.

All the tobacco is accounted for by the government. Permits are required to grow and sell it.Plus permits are given to purchase. It is all traced from growing to production.

i was just therein the Delhi Ontario area two days ago. There are still tobacco farms growing tobacco and the tobacco acreage is rather considerable. The tobacco farms, for the most part are highly advanced with the bulk kilns,. the tobacco combine harvester, and with advanced grading and stripping equipment. Also, most of the farms are very neat and well cared for. I will say that the Ontario tobacco acreage is quite small as to what it was 40 plus years ago. Countries with large land masses such as China, Brazil, and India have all expanded tobacco production exponentially over the last three decades. The States experienced a big decline in tobacco production around 20 years ago, but their production has been on the increase in the last 10.

@@brianzybura8633 Hi again .We grew tobacco for many years in Sparta _ Aylmer area. My grampa grew and then my dad took over and then I grew for about 11 years and then we got a letter saying that we had to lower our quota down quite a bit and it got very hard to make any money so we got out of tobacco. We still farmed cash crop, corn, beans ,wheet for 8 years then I decided to sell the farm and retire. My kids did not want the farm so I sold it. Now I miss the farm a lot but I am too old now.

@@robforbes2602 My farm story is quite similar to yours. Looking back on the experience, I enjoyed tobacco more when my parents were growing it--back in the sixties and early seventies then when I was growing it in the late seventies and early eighties. The reason being is a long time ago, a lot of people enjoyed working in tobacco. By the late seventies and later that philosophy faded. As you likely know, good reliable offshore labour would not show up until years later. I certainly love all the modernizations of tobacco production, but now a tobacco farmer has to worry about getting contracts year after year.
