To Wear OR Not To Wear a T-Shirt & Why A TShirt Is Not Your Best Option

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Want to know if the t-shirt is for you? gentl.mn/to-wear-or-not-to-wear
So how did the t-shirt get so popular?
First, it started out as an undergarment for laborers and workers and before then, they would wear a union suit which was a combination of undergarment of pants and shirt then they cut it apart and the t-shirt was born. Sometime between 1898 and 1930, the US Navy adapted a t-shirt as an undergarment and issued it to their soldiers. In the beginning, it was a white cotton crew neck t-shirt that had short sleeves.
Today, t-shirts are popular with men for the same reasons; first of all it's cheap. It's cheap to make, it's relatively inexpensive to buy, on top of that, it's easy to put on, you don't have to worry about it, and so a lot of men wear it all the time. Even though the retail price is low, a t-shirt is actually very inexpensive to produce because you have very few seams, the fabric is produced in such a bulk volume that it's very cost-effective, and so you can produce a t-shirt today that costs less than one dollar if you go to low-cost countries.
In terms of retail, you can buy them anywhere from $3 all the way up to thousands of dollars depending on whether it's a designer like Dior or not. Even if the retail price is really up there, it's still a cheap shirt that was meant to be worn by boys and as an undergarment by laborers. So, it's not ideal if you want to show the best side of you.
So to wear or not wear a t-shirt? That is a question. So when can you wear a t-shirt?
think it's great if you have work to do in the yard, if you mow your lawn, for example, if you go to the gym. When involved in a physical activity, rather than using plain cotton, you might want to go with more advanced fabrics that have a moisture wicking property such as modal. Cotton can absorb up to 27 times of its own weight in moisture and if you keep it at your body it might be drafty and uncomfortable.
You could also wear a t-shirt as an undershirt, however, that's not very smart because t-shirts typically have this crew neck, sometimes of a v-neck, but it's quite high and if you wear a dress shirt on top of it, you can see it peek out from underneath the collar which looks extremely cheap and bad.
A t-shirt can also be great as a PJ substitute and a lot of men like to wear it when paired with underwear. Another popular place for t-shirts is clubs or when you go out at night and frankly when I was a teenager, I wore t-shirts. And in order to stand out sometimes, I would go for more designer shirts and remember I was once in Hungary and I got this really cool shirt for a very low price and it was a party and someone wanted to have it desperately, so I sold it to him on the spot for $150.
What should you wear instead?
Ideally, if you want to take it one notch up from a regular t-shirt. I suggest to invest in a Henley shirt. Basically, it has the same properties of a t-shirt, however, it has a heavier fabric that drapes better and it also has a fly with buttons which just is an interesting detail that makes you instantly different than other people around you who wear t-shirts.
If you want to look different, I suggest to go with a popover shirt specifically this summer and it's basically a dress shirt that has a fly that goes only to the middle so we have to pop it over your head just like you would with a t-shirt. Since it's a little more casual than a dress shirt, I suggest to go with a summery fabric that is breezy.
You want to take it even a further notch up, go with a dress shirt. At the end of the day, if you just wear a dress shirt, add some color, otherwise, it just looks like you're using your regular white and light office shirts and wearing them at night and that's not ideal. Now, I know it's a far cry from a t-shirt but if you want to go in more formal and stylish, I suggest you add a blazer to the mix with your dress shirt because it just looks very handsome and debonair.

T shirt is a very cool item and should be worn even in public Be honest Sven; if you had a lean muscular physique - would you then be a snob that you are today You over do it sometimes A plain t shirt and jeans is a very cool item Worn by movie starts past and present James dean for an example!! You need to diversify your fashion/style taste I think all you do is go to vintage and charity shop and only by old stuff : now nothing wrong with that but you also must appreciate that a plain t shirt if worn correctly on a good physique then it's priceless!!

I love all your videos, and thank you for the fine content. I'm currently transitioning out of the Army after five years of service and I'm getting an MBA in the fall and transitioning to the business world; hence, I need to up my suit game (which now consists of a few Express suits, shirts, and ties). Luckily, my girlfriend knows way more about fashion then I do. Just to clarify -- and before joining the military, I had no idea -- service members (SM's) in the Army are soldiers; SM's in the Air Force are airmen; SM's in the Marine Corps are marines; and SM's in the Navy, which you mentioned in your video, are sailors, not soldiers. Not a huge deal, just wanted to point that out if you made another reference to the military in future videos. Thanks again for all your great content!

Fashion is a challenge for me because ,while I love wearing classic men's clothes as displayed on this channel, especially WINTER clothes, I have an unusual blood condition resulting in me usually feeling about 10-15 degrees fahrenheit warmer than the average person. As soon as it hits 60 degrees I'm ready for a t-shirt, even though I'd prefer to wear a dress shirt, tie, vest and sport jacket. So I guess the best compromise is to try to build my wardrobe out of mainly cotton/seersucker and linen?

Another great video. It's so true. Even when I was younger and in really great shape, I was cursed with a swayed back and a plain T shirt never looked good on me. Occasionally I'll wear a silk or linen v-neck, but only under a jacket. It's unfortunate that today the national uniform for kids and grown men alike seems to be a T shirt or oversized jersey, baggy Lycra shorts, and dirty worn jogging shoes. Even in a polo shirt and jeans, you're almost overdressed to most people. ;)

With that being said, I’m curious to know if you’re only catering to a certain demographic ? I asked this because most guys love t-shirts. As a matter of fact I wear them with jeans a nice pair of double monk straps and get complimented regularly. Also lots of clothes you consider “cheap” guys take pride in purchasing them. Maybe I’m confusing what you say and if so please clarify. If I’m wrong please forgive me. It’s just you call lots of clothes “cheap”. Some may take offense to that. Thanks for time and may GOD bless you.

Excellent video as usual! :-) I don't wear T-shirts either; I prefer polo shirts; Im not in a bad shape but as you stated T-shirts don't do much good for the regular body type!!! Keep up the great videos!

All your reasons for not wearing a tshirt are exactly the reasons I love seeing my bf in a tshirt. It shows off his shoulders, pecs, bis, and v-taper in a way dress shirts do not. I enjoy seeing the interesting ensembles you put together, and everyone knows "every woman's crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man," but I just can't imagine mine dressing anything like that.

A t, shorts, and flip flops is all you need for the summer. Short sleeved button ups are fine too, and some kind of fashion sneakers . No way I'd wear boat shoes even tho I'm a naval engineer...

I think that I stopped wearing T-shirts as casual shirts around age 30 and have relegated them to yard work, the gym, the pool, or when doing things like hiking or cycling.

Where would poet shirts (and other historical shirts from the 1600's-1700's) fit in this discussion? Perhaps they're too "olde" for consideration? Yet, I find them quite adequate in their formality and function... Please let me know your take on this.

I usually only wear t-shirts as an under shirt, and on occasion when I actually want to look boring to avoid getting attention. I stick to dark fabrics though, and subtle prints, to avoid looking too pudgy in it. I like wearing stylish men's fashion and it's definitely a hobby for me, but I don't always wear stylish outfits. Sometimes I like going controversial and looking deliberately shaggy. Then oversized, washed out t-shirts, some old jeans and hoodies that are literally falling apart is my go-to. It might seem like a strange choice but I like the way I'm treated then. Maybe I come across as more down to earth and care-free then or something. But then other times I want to dress things up (even if there's no occasion for it) and then I'm crazy about dress shirts, waistcoats and nice, stylish accessories. So it really depends on my mood tbh, and there definitely are t-shirt moods for me sometimes.
