Yup. And not only that he was on 2 shuttles flights: he commanded the first ever shuttle flight. No one else could ever be the first. And it had never been test launched: he and Bob Crippen were launched on a while that had never been completely tested. Balls of steel.

@@jeffjeff4477 Hello! Your assessment of his legendary personality is exactly the same as mine. I sincerely thank you for the kind words addressed to Russia, and I, like many Russians, respect the American people. You must have seen space rocket launches more than once, living near Cape Canaveral? That's great! 👍John Glenn and Neil Armstrong went into space from it, who also answered my letters thirty years ago. Their letters and autographed photographs have become our family heirloom. I wish you and your loved ones the best wishes and also hope for PEACE with a capital letter.❤🤝

I fully agree with you in assessing the personality of John Young. In 1981, I served in the border troops of the KGB of the USSR and in the news on TV I saw the landing of STS-1 Columbia, there was no opportunity to watch the launch. I could not imagine that many years would pass and in 1995 John Young would send me an autographed photo of himself in response to my letter. He was a highly decent man and a professional in his field. Eternal memory to him.

When you hear his last few sentences that the technology required in space will probably ultimately save us on earth, it reinforces what a pivotal human john young was in Nasa. Of all humanity, and when our history is largely forgotten people will remember the handful of fighter pilots that landed on the moon.

I like the story about the Apollo 16 lift off. The heart rate of one of the other Apollo 16 astronauts at liftoff was like 150/bpm. John's was 70. He said.. "my heart's so old, it won't go any faster" ! He was one cool character under pressure.

Slightly wrong, there. He flew to the moon twice, but he only landed and walked on it once. It was Apollo 12's Pete Conrad who saved Skylab. What John did was fly the inaugural mission of the Space Shuttle, and then he flew one more Shuttle mission with a full complement of specialists.

John , unarguably a brilliant man of very much accomplishment, surprised me with his apparent lack of public speaking abilities. He obviously has tremendous knowledge, but just can't seem to get his ideas out in an informative way. This may be why he didn't seem to give a lot of interviews. I certainly mean no disrespect to this admirable man, Chuck Yeager was a bit course in his speech, but they are both amazing people.❤ I must add they were busy getting the job done, not necessarily talking about it.I have always been awed by Buzz Aldrin. Not only a brilliant man but Buzz could talk about it in a way that almost took you with him on the journey.

John Young *wasn't* an 'astronaut'. there is no such thing as an 'astronaut', there is no such thing as "outer space". there is no need to talk about "outer space" at all to prove that there is no such thing. those who are experts in the heliocentric model like me, know that the heliocentric model is verbal explanations and mathematical equations. the mathematical equations of the heliocentric model are more important than its verbal explanations. once you show that all the equations are false, the entire heliocentric model is null and void, going in the trash. anyone who wants to learn how to disprove the heliocentric model by proving that Newton's second law is a false equation, is welcome to answer me.
