To the Chandeleur Islands in a Skiff

Спорт

Late Spring is a great time to venture out to the Louisiana barrier islands in search of big speckled trout. There are many barrier islands, all of which are capable of delivering excellent fishing, but none are as legendary as the Chandeleur Islands Chain.
The Chandeleur Islands are pristine and uninhabited, but it's not so easy to get there. Lying 40 miles south of the Mississippi coast, this Louisiana island chain is known for wade fishing and for big trout.
The Chandeleur Island area is covered with shallow water flats and sandbars, so a flats skiff is perfect for exploring this magical place. But how can you take a flats skiff 40 miles from the coast when much of that distance is through open water? Well, I did just that recently in my Ankona Cayenne flats boat, and I'll tell you why and how I did it safely.

    Really enjoyed your video, Jon. Fished that area (by the Islander) last year and caught my first topwater trout there. In fact, fishing was so good and a big red took so long to land, that we got stuck on that exact flat at low tide. (no good Samaritans nearby :-) ) We were fortunate to have beautiful weather and had plenty of extra supplies to enjoy the extended stay. It was fascinating to see what fish came in as the tide came back in and how the (free swimming) shrimp hid so effectively from the catfish, etc. A 6' shark slammed his head into the side of our boat and pandemonium ensued @ 2a!! I'm sure he was very used to patrolling that flat without that 22' fiberglass behemoth in his way. All in all; because of the preparations we made similar to the ones you mentioned, and having extra food, fresh water, tools, mechanical spares, medical kit and rain gear (not needed) it was an enjoyable trip! We stayed one night on the Islander and could have waded back to it the night we were stuck, but Ron had departed. :-)

    Used to drift fish lush grass beds on the inside. Often, gin clear water. There were these "sand pots" (areas where there was no grass) a the trout would lay wait in the edge of the grass for some unsuspecting bait fish to swim by. Drifting the grass beds in a boat like yours is the ticket.

    Suggestion. You might already do this but I recommend a high quality pair of wire snips. If you catch a cable, crab trap or commercial twine or net in your prop, it will not come out without a lot of cutting. Harbor freight snips will stop working half way through a few cuts. Great video. I’m not willing to risk it in a 22’ inshore hull.

    @@JonMillerFishing How it plays out is the first big wave that washes over the bow make your boat lean to one side. The next one swamps you. The third big wave turns you over! I have a well documented history of doing stupid things! LOL Self bailing boats are a must for that area! My buddy goes out there with his surf board to act as a life raft! LOL

  • @JonMillerFishing

    @JonMillerFishing

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's it, and down they go. I had a Boston Whaler at one point, which is self bailing and unsinkable, but can still capsize. But I am uncertain if self bailing can save the boat from capsizing in really rough seas. The cockpit floor is only a few inches above the waterline, so water drains slowly. I don't know if it would relieve the unbalanced problem quickly enough, unless there was a lot of time between waves coming over the bow. Two 1500 gph bilge pumps would discharge 50 gpm. 50 gal is a good estimate of the amount of water that could come in over the bow from a single wave. So if you could stay clear for one minute you may be able to keep up. Better yet, don't get into that kind of situation. Thanks for the comments! I enjoy discussing boat related topics.

    Jon Miller fished lake for many years with lead core line trolling. If I told u the size would not believe. U right on the fresh water and lake production. But best think about Louisiana fishing when one door closes another opens up. When the closed off the MRGO killed the number one trout spot any where Seabrook bridge cut. Had 3 friends made a good living fishing that area. Now with the closing that is over but it also gave us the best winter trout area. We now have miles and miles of deep clear water and trout love it. I fished that area with a mentor Cop Cop Smith who died. I left that area to Lafitte. One thing when u fish top water needle nose with cutting edge is a must along with hat and glasses.

    Love your videos. You have great energy. I gave up on speckled trout here in SWFL. You can catch them easy enough in early Spring in 3-5 grass bottom. But two out of three fish are chock full of parasites. They are just not worth going after and certainly not worth harvesting.

  • @JonMillerFishing

    @JonMillerFishing

    4 жыл бұрын

    Sorry to hear that. What size is a big trout for your area?

  • @KungPowEnterFist

    @KungPowEnterFist

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@JonMillerFishing I've never caught one over 22 inches, but 18-22 inches is very common. Slot is 15-19, with only one over 19 allowed. Zero bag on trout right now in SWFL, though. It will probably be another year before trout, redfish and snook open up again, or perhaps even longer. Everything was fine up until 2015. But due to economic recovery ( far greater effect) and a series of green/red tides (far lessor effect), the fishery has been decimated. The successive and extended green/red tides in 2017/2018 were the final 3 nails in the coffin, but the other 17 nails were put there by the charter captains prior to those events. There is just no regulation or not enough regulation to limit the quantity of them and their activities. They are relentless, coordinated, and have zero respect for the fishery, and that is what got us to where we are now. But they don't want people figuring that out, so Captains for Clean Water was founded to make sure no one ever figures that out.

    Jon, great video. I am planning a trip to the islands soon. In your opinion and experience going out there, what wind direction usually equates to the lower seas for traveling? Thanks

  • @JonMillerFishing

    @JonMillerFishing

    4 жыл бұрын

    There isn't really any direction that will have lower seas if the wind is 15 knots or greater. West and North wind is bad for fishing, East and South winds are good for fishing. If you launch from the MS coast east of Pass Christian, strong East and South winds will produce a big chop along a good portion of your route because that part of the coast is unprotected. I launch from LaFrance because the ocean swells don't effect that route. Now days coming back to LaFrance from the islands in the afternoon you will often encounter a 3 ft. chop on the north shore of Lake Borgne. Summertime travel out there is too volatile for me, so I've quit the Chandeleurs until sometime in the Fall.

    Off topic a little, I have seen a video from a few years ago, you had said you used inavx.. how accurate is the navionics on it and overall accuracy?

  • @JonMillerFishing

    @JonMillerFishing

    4 жыл бұрын

    I was using it on an iPAD and the accuracy was fine. I still have the App on my phone as a backup GPS. The iPAD was not as easy to see in bright sun and even with the weather cover, the touchscreen was hard to use in the rain. I think it would be a great system in a cabin or a well protected console. iNAVX will also import engine function, weather, and a bunch of other parameters.
