To self-checkout or not to self-checkout?

Turns out, we could all be wrong about self-checkout machines being a faster, more efficient way to buy groceries, according to recent research.

Self-checkout is just a way for stores to make more money (fees for person accused of theft), save money (by not hiring cashiers), and having fun (giving a person a criminal record for life).

Self checkout is a choice. You get irritated that it's slower? Blame the people using the self checkouts that have entire carts filled to the brim with groceries and take 10 seconds to find the big fat bar code on the top of the lid just to scan it.

Krogers has a self checkout. During certain hours this is all that is open(at the time). People are forced into self-checkout because only 2-3 of the capable cashier registers are open and in certain chains they don't put their best cashiers forward. I witnessed an elderly woman shopping struggle with checking herself out while the overweight employee over the kiosks played on her cell phone. If this were implemented correctly for user adoption, then self checkout lanes should in fact get at a minimum 2% discount or some reward for doing so, it is not perceived as convenience in my opinion.

Now is not the time to be bitching about self checkouts. These things have been around for decades now in some places and more and more people are using them. More people are willing to use them than not, and companies know this. The time to boycott new technology is soon after it appears, not after it has become normative or semi-normative.

Interesting, I was at a Ralph’s recently which is a Kroger grocery store. Early in the morning I go shopping there and I want to buy alcohol, but there’s no human cashiers to purchase the alcohol because they have laws in California that say you cannot purchase alcohol with the automated self check out machines. I spoke with the store associate about this issue and they said they will gladly call somebody down from the office to come. Check me out in person like we have been doing for the last 150 years. I don’t fully understand why society would not boycott such technology because it is not more inconvenient as much as they believe it is half the time the machine doesn’t work, and like you said the workers are lazy or stupid or don’t care. I am boycotting all self check out machines until they go away. I am also advising all of my friends and families and never use them because they can get accused of stealing and that’s not worth it. And like you said I’ve been a firm believer that customer should be getting a discount for doing somebody else’s job and 2% is not high enough.

@@stevewilson6733 The machines are calibrated a certain way to keep track of what has been scanned, but few people seem to understand that, or bother to try and do so. And that is why they have so many issues with the machines locking up on them. They aren't hard to use if you know how they are calibrated, and it is very intuitive overall. For the most part. The machines can sometimes be extra touchy.

He had his kids with him , making him look like a criminal .. it's not customers responsible to check ourselves out . Believe me , it won't end there .. but to each their own . And as far as judging what I buy ? I couldn't care less what a walmart cashier thinks about what I am buying.. their job is to ring my items up , and give me my change . That's it .
