To INFINITY...and Beyond! (Surging Idle, No Comm)

This 2007 Infinity G35x is having a surging high idle problem after a recent timing chain job.
But for some reason, it is unable to complete the "Idle Relearn" procedure.
When the engine is running, communication is lost with the Engine computer!!

The thing that bothers me is that when the engine is not running, CAN communication with the TCM is fine. That indicates to me that the TCM CAN interface works. With engine running, whole CAN bus is trashed, but unplugging power to the TCM restores communication. I still think it's a ground problem somewhere. During crank, ground level rose a lot. If it idled okay before timing chain, then it stands to reason that something done while replacing the chain caused the issue. I'm guessing unplugging tcm stopped it from forcing a lower ground potential during comms, because that's how CAN low works, it pulls the bus wire to its local idea of ground, which probably doesn't match the engines idea of ground, since so much current is flowing forcing a voltage rise on its ground. I think you could see on the scope that when one module talked, bus voltages were different than when another would talk. The engine doesn't have a good ground to the battery anymore. Ground potential matches the TCM ground potential when low current is flowing through the engine electronics, especially coils and injectors, then at startup, engine ground rises. I'd like to have seen a voltage drop test between engine block and battery ground, not running, then running. I bet there is a full volt of difference.

I also think it might be an engine ground issue. It would have been easy to test it with a multimeter or even some boost cable: one on the motor, one on the battery negative. If it do nothing then the ground is fine. If something change then the ground is faulty. Also, it crank weirdly imo.

its also verry common on nissans of this year range to have the radiator fail, and leak coolant into the transmission, on this car the TCM is actually part of the valve body inside the transmission. When the coolant gets it there it likes to short the can lines. Most of the ones ive seen have been xterras and frontiers. But its super common, It would have been cool to see if the ground was missing for the transmission also. just thought id add in that for a possibility

On the 05 G35 the Idle relearn can be done doing the "Foot Dance " procedure on turning the accessory on/ off and pressing the pedal to the floor IAW the procedure. I have done it and it works. If you mess with the throttle body on the G35, you most likely will have to perform the entire procedure...I learned that the hard way.

Ivan, I have seen a similar issue on the 2006-2010 Ford Explorer V8's with the 6R automatic. You'd normally get a funky shift, or a wrench light, and U101 and a U1900 DTC. Turns out, Ford ran the CANBUS lines right across the coils on bank 1, and when you get a coil that breaks down, it introduces interference into the CANBUS, and since you have CAN, throttle control, and transmission control all in this same loom, it causes pretty crazy problems on these. When you were getting crazy CAN voltage spikes during crank and run, it sure made me recall the Ford Explorer problems, because they were ultimately caused by bad ignition coils.

I really think the car just had a base electrical system problem. The cranking was slow and labored and other modules had voltage codes. Communication was also fine with the engine off, so I doubt it's an actual module problem. It sounds almost like the car was in a limp mode because the modules couldn't communicate with each other. I believe the reason communication stopped during cranking and engine running is because of the increased load on the battery. The squealing belt may also be an indicator of a stressed electrical system (the regulator was defaulting to full field to charge the battery, causing the belt to slip).

Ivan, Idle hunting up and down is ALWAYS an air leak. In this case it is leaking right past the throttle plate. Let me explain, the computer adjusted to it's max high Idle to compensate for dirty throttle plates or valve timing issues. Now that those issues don't exist, the relearn must be preformed first. My point is that, If after the successful completion of the relearn, you still have idle hunt, there is an air leak present. Often times it will be hidden in the pcv system, brake booster, or evap. After 35 years and I have never been able to prove the "air leak theory" on Idle hunt wrong. Idle hunt is ALWAYS caused by air leaks. Thanks for reading. I hope this helps someone.

That was my original thought as well, Michael. I assumed that the shop checked for leaks with starter fluid/water/propane before reaching out to Ivan. Especially with the work they just performed to the car. However, I would think that canbus issue when running would still be present.

  • @michaelwitmer7536

@@djosbun Absolutely, The canbus issue is a problem, one of the things not allowing the relearn. I just wanted to point out the basis of why the engine was misbehaving. I have repaired many cars that would not communicate for some obscure reason, but still ran fine. Don't get me wrong, correcting the trans computer issue is one of the next moves. I just wouldn't be surprised if it still won't relearn once the computer is replaced. Some of these Nissans, I have had to disconnect injectors to get the idle down far enough for the computer to allow relearn. It quickly taught me to never clean a throttle plate on a nissan unless Im there to correct a concern. Good talking to ya.

With all the modules able to communicate engine off, and the can bias going low on some modules with engine running, I would have leaned towards a power no longer being able to supply ample amperage with the load of everything running. You said you spent hours on this, did you check power at the pcm? Was unplugging the TCM reducing the load enough that the ECM now had proper voltage? Could unplugging the other modules do the same thing? Great work as always, just never seen you give up on something like this without more of a explanation. Isn't that thing great? I've defied physics with mine, lol! Had a dead battery on my trailer winch - the Audew cranked up a Saturn sedan faster than that winch has EVER spun! I couldn't believe it. Winch battery completely died on me the next time I had to use it for a 2008 RX350 - I had to do that one TWICE, since my winch shifter detent failed and put the thing in free spool while I had the vehicle all the way up on the trailer!! It went careening back down off the trailer towards the woods and a stone wall! I had to SLAM it back in drive to stop it from going into the woods! So now I had to winch up the full length of the cable under load. I got the vehicle up there again (thank God) before the Audew died - that magic box that plugs into the unit with the positive and negative clamps fried itself. Took almost 3 months to get one from the mainland, lol. It's back up and running again. They sent it free, so that was great! Was months after I had bought it, too. Extremely impressed with that jump pack! I might buy a second one to have around in case I cook the box again. Good choice!

As soon as I saw the signal dropouts when the car started, I would have taken a can of De-Oxit and taken apart, sprayed and firmly reconnected each connector in the wiring harnesses that had been touched when the timing job was done, as well as the ones that were vital to communication with the ECM, TCM, cam/crank sensors, the accelerator pedal position sensor, throttle body sensor, and mass air flow sensor, and any connector in the engine control system that could have had resistance or corrosion build-up occur while the car was sitting up outside for 5 months, as well as checking the major engine block to battery negative connections and the negative battery connections to the engine cradle grounds and body grounds. Bad grounds are an epidemic in modern, computer-controlled cars.

Ivan, would the TCM be down by the floorboard where the interior was soaked with water? Maybe I missed something but checking the connector at least and maybe ground quality at the TCM seems like the next path before condemning the module. I hate getting beat on a repair by being constrained by a shoestring budget...

If scope ground always goes to battery negative, then why do so many people swear by an isolated scope? In my opinion, it really depends on the signal you are measuring. Good luck trying to measure the tiniest signal on a 2-wire active digital wheel speed sensor with your scope ground connected to battery negative. You don't need a diff scope for that, but you do need to put the scope ground on the sensor ground and not battery negative.

Now wait a minute... The battery was definitely low, could hardly turn the engine over at the end. A non-communicating ECM could/would mean no alternator control - does it default to 14.5 V or no-charge? If the car is running with 11-ish volts, all those problems - including a module that effs up the CAN - can occur. I see it quite often.

I have an 07 350z that’s manual and I have this exact idle problem, it happened after I cleaned the throttle bodies. So I tried the idle relearn about 1000 times and that didn’t work. So I then took it to my local Nissan dealer to get a diagnosis and they said basically their scanner isn’t communicating with the ecu and that I need a new one which is $2200 btw. I don’t think the issue is the ecu I think it’s something more like whats going on with the g35 in the video but since my z is a manual I’m not sure what I could disconnect to try and see if unplugging something will fix comms between the ecu and scanner. I would really appreciate some helpful feedback on this if anyone has any.
