To be or not be a GMO, that is the question. | Stefan Jansson | TEDxUmeå

Genetically modified (GM) plants is a sensitive issue, despite the fact that scientific data has shown that they are no more or no less risky for human health or the environment than those that we eat today. Yet, the legislation makes it in reality forbidden to use them in the EU. If there are laws that prohibits the use of GM plants, one may think that it should be possible to define what a GM plant is. The lecture will explain how advances in biology has taken away the borderline between GM and ”non-GM” plants."
He is professor in Plant Cell- and Molecular Biology at Umeå Plant Science Centre/Umeå University. In his research he studies on one hand how plants harvest sunlight and use it in photosynthesis, and on the other hand use genetics and genomics to study natural variation in trees, in particular how trees know that it is autumn. He is member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and takes often part in the public debate, for example on GMOs.

This is better than many, more popular, things I've seen about GMO's. Great history explanation. Thanks.

Its human nature to modify plants and animal , its not handicap too make plants healthy.

If EU does ban CRISPR then all a company needs to do is start up a section that is screening for mutants. Then the CRISPR department accidently mixes some of there already discovered CRISPR mutants into the mutant screen seed (the accident would happen in the middle of the night while the security system was being upgraded - only two people need to know about the accident). Then low and behold the mutant screen team appears to get quite lucky and they find a natural mutant with the trait they were after fairly early on in the screen. And bingo - you have a non GMO product ready to rollout.

Lie number one - 'not legal in the EU'. Then why has the UK planted their first fields of GMO potatoes this year?

first of all this was on 2016 not on 2018, it was illegal back then, in 2018 the law changed and it was to each country competence to legallize it or not

it's funny to me that the one side wants to know what are GMO and the other side equivocates their GMO with Monsanto... if Monsanto/DuPont et al could be isolated in the GMO debate as bad actors, science could be mainlined industrially to the agricultural sector... in my rose-colored glass thoughts

I love the idea of genetically modifying crops to be bigger, tastier, more nutritious, and drought tolerant. Unfortunately, most of the current GMOs are genetically modified to withstand being sprayed with Roundup or Dicamba, resulting the overuse and reliance on petrochemical herbicides.

Your post is false Michael. With gmo technology crops farmers like me are able to use LESS and SAFER pesticides. Why would you want farmers like me to go back to using more and more harmful pesticides when the ones we are using with gmo technology crops are even safer than many of the pesticides organic growers use?

  • @mgfons

Yes, I know that GMO Bt Crops result in more pounds on the ground of BT, which persist longer in the environment than would be the case if the Bt was sprayed on. The increase of Bt prevalence in the environment from use of GMO Bt crops has the potential to increase the speed at which insects can evolve resistance to Bt, thus making the Bt less effective. Nevertheless, I think that Roundup Ready and Dicamba ready crops are the biggest problem because they result in overuse of herbicide. I think that weeds are a problem that can be solved without chemicals. I like the method of growing cover crops and using no-till mechanical "roller crimper planter" to roll down the cover crop and plant soy in one pass. Also, I like the tried and true practice of managed intensive rotational grazing livestock production, which is common in places like New Zealand, a place in which there are no agriculture subsides for farmers to rely on.

Every thing in your post is False Michael Let's address your ignorance on Bt. Bt gmo technology is now being use in Europe as in all over the world. Organic growers have used Bt for decades even injecting some food with Bt. I am sure you have heard of Bt corn. Bt corn contains naturally occurring Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria, a result of recombinant DNA techniques. that selectively kill caterpillar pest. Organic growers have for decades approved sprays containing Bt, a naturally occurring soil bacterium. Bt produces biotoxins lethal to moths, caterpillars and butterflies when ingested. Because it targets these insects' intestinal membranes(ABSENT in HUMANS and ANIMALS ), the EPA considers it benign to non- caterpillar species, including beneficial insects. When Organic growers spray bt they kill all moths, caterpillars, and butterflies but we do not do that with gmo corn because only corn bore and corn root worms attacks corn so they are the only insects affected. For 80 years farmers like me used dangerous dangerous pesticides to control theses insects but today we do not have to use them thanks to gmo technology. GMO technology is safer for my children, my Wife, our water, our farm, and our environment. WE and YOU should give thanks to almighty GOD for the wisdom of GMO.

GMO Facts. GMO benefits according to Monsanto: Monsanto claimed that glyphosate would never accumulate in human bodies and nature. Now 70% of people pee glyphosate, it is in breastmilk and rain water. THAT was easy to know, hence a blatant lie. Monsanto claimed that there would NEVER be any resistent superweeds and bugs. There are plenty, entire landscapes are lost, that's why they are feverishly developing Dicamba. They say it makes way better yields. Well, Europe's are higher without GMOs. They say it enhances nutrition. Golden Rice does NOT (after 15 years!!!), as the FDA states in June 2018. They say it reduces poison use. It does not, it's rising like crazy. They say it feeds the world. SO WHY do 20% of US Americans go hungry? Ah, because they are poor. YOU GOT IT. Same problem in Africa and Asia, not the amount of food. ... Why still believe them? WHICH ARGUMENT IS STILL VALID? ... drought resistent plants. Thanks for saying that - not a single GMO variety yet! After 30 years. But plenty of non-GMO ones. Hahahahahahah. Ah, and finally, let's have a look outside the LAB and PR articles ... IN THE FIELD... the Argentinian soy cultivation region's reality: 4x higher birth defects and 3x higher cancer than the national averrage, since the introduction of GMO ag. WHAT could be the reason? Is Sofia Gattica who brought that up a shill, getting rich on protesting against epidemic birth defects? Is she a Chine agent? An elf? And meanwhile 1 in 3 Canadian kids suffers from a chronic disease. But people want to think it comes from God or watching Spongebob, not from the chelator glyphosate which sucks up minerals and nutrients and kills gut bacteria which RUN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. So well studied GMO lobbyists :) : was this too complex information for someone who studied GMOs for years? :-D

Congress passed a labeling law last summer. Any 7 year old child can purchase what he chooses now. By the way Monsanto has been bought out, they do not exist. There are many companies producing and selling gmo seed. Monsanto was No. 2 when they were bought out.

You mean the bill that requires a bar code to be put on GM foods that can only be read by people with a smart phone with the correct application? Did that law pass? Did the merger with Bayer and Monsanto actually go through? If so, very bad for humanity. What do you mean, "Monsanto was no. 2" ??!!! It is common knowledge that they produced and sold approximately 90% of all GM seed!

NO if the label says its organic then it is organic. If the label says it is non gmo then it is non gmo. Now let's see if you are as smart as a seven year old child, if the label does not say non gmo or organic then what is it? Monsanto was no.2 in gmo seed sales. Do you know who is No. 1? It sounds like you have very little common knowledge.

David Adcock -- When you resort to ad hominem insults instead to facts and reason, you demonstrate the weakness of your position. It's funny that you pretend there are only 2 catagories of foods in the supermarkets: organic and gmo. There is a third large catagory in between of foods that are considered "conventional," which are not organic and not gmo which are grown using pesticides and chemical fertilizers. We need GMO labeling so people can tell the conventional from the gmo foods (and without needing a smartphone).
