Stop those destructive Racoons from tearing up your garden, or in my case corn with a simple to install solar (or powered) electric fence. This is my story.

    great video! We did the same thing this year because last year the coons destroyed our entire patch (in town) in one evening. It was nearing harvest and they just obliterated it. We ended up getting 2 years. They really discouraged us. We put in the fence a couple weeks ago as the corn started getting taller. Good luck. i loved seeing the coon get shocked - sweet revenge!

    I too have raccoon problems. I have been growing gardens for 30 + years. I have put up electric netting (which seems to work) but, I lack 20 feet to complete circuit, so I laid down 4 strands of electric wire. (2,4,6, &12"). Nota. They seem to ignore the shock going thru the wire. We are trying liquid (stinky) spray at the 20 feet of wire and they just hold their breath as they pass thru. Some years they ignore the corn but not this year. Money spent on this far exceeds the value of the corn but some years when you have a nice crop, the taste of freshly picked sweet corn makes these problems go away. Good Luck next year!

    Seems we have another similar problem besides the trash piles left for us by others. We, too have a raccoon issue. They are right up against our house, digging up plants that they don’t eat, just destroy. Trapping and “other means” have worked to thin the herd so far. They are determined little terrorists. Great idea on the fencing! Always look forward to seeing your new ideas and projects!

    DY - thanks for the great feedback - always welcome and appreciated. Disclaimer, my videos should always be taken as "How Did" vs "How To" as should be evident, I'm no expert, but learning as I go. They are surprisingly destructive for sure. Hoping for a better garden next year. What I like about the little solar charger is that it can work on a much longer fence (think it says what 2-3 miles), so as my plot grows, the only new equipment I'll need is additional posts.

    I never got to plant anything last year. After preparing my containers, that SWAT team just dug, dug and DUG everything up. I tried a bunch of recommended hacks to hamper them, but it's those opposable thumbs, and they seem to get angry the more you try to hamper their activities. 😮

    I look forward to a follow up video/report. I had intended to plant a acre or so on my flats for the critters. Life took over however. I did manage a very small garden for my granddaughter. The Yanmar and I learned a few things. She will end up needing a fence I’m sure, she does not wish to share with the critters. 5 and 7 acre parcels, so lots of critters. Thanks for sharing.

    @@TryNewThings i think it kinda works. I put vinegar on old rags, some in a sponges, some in a big soap bottle with the lid half open. The raccoons would sniff it and leave quickly. I used white vinegar but others recommended using apple cider vinegar for the stronger smell. I think the whole idea with vinegar is they mask the smell of food nearby so they cant smell the it and they dont come back. but the annoying part is every 4-5 days you have to refill the vinegar depending on the setup. i also used Cayenne pepper previously due to its strong smell as well. but they are expensive so I end up switching back to white vinegar. TLDR: the best method is your method of installing electrical fencing to keep them Permanently away !! love your video! cheers

    They don't like the smell of vinegar and Epson salts , also sound's funny but Racoon's have soft hands and don't like pokey things hitting their hands. There' tons of things you can come up with , i take chicken wire and cut it into long strips, you cut on each side of the wire and it essentially makes a strip barbed wire and you just weave it into your fencing where the racoons or critters try to climb it .

    It did work. I will be honest though it was time consuming to put up, a mess to take down (the wire did not re-spool well at all), and I ended up going with an electrified (tall) poultry net this year which I do prefer overall, however is significantly more expensive.

  • @TryNewThings

    @TryNewThings

    I get the feeling the two runs of electrified fencing would not be enough to stop the racoons. I think they would learn quickly they could get a shock on their way through to the crops, and again on the way out... but it would be worth it. I would highly recommend a critter fence as well in close proximity that would increase the chances of multiple shocks while they try and figure out how to get through the critter fence. This year I'm planning on taking it up a notch (I hope it is an improvement), rather than a simple critter fence I bought an electrified mesh fence, I intend to install that as well as two lines of further electrified wire. Neither will keep the deer out if they want in though. My set up is too easy for them to jump over.

    @@TryNewThings More and more I am realizing I am going to have to get an electric fence for the short guys. For several years I have used the 'double fence' for the deer. Quite successful. Doesn't really have to be tall...Just fence in the crop....the back out about 3 feet and string another fence. Because their depth perception is not good...they are leery of jumping over them. Look up videos on a '3 wire fence.' Put 2 strands on outer row of posts and 1 wire on inner row of posts. It really confuses them. I use 1/2" white mule tape so they can see it really well. At the end of the year, I take it down, throw it in a zippered pillow case and wash and dry it. Keeps it in good shape and ready for the next round. Just the coons and rabbits have me pulling my hair out. lol Jesus bless. And thanks again for your videoing this for us.

    Hello there Clair's Adventures, thank you so much for the question. It did indeed work as intended, other than my crop had already been pretty decimated by the racoons before I put it up, did manage to save what was left. You do need to be careful with the wire spacing, and this may require more care and poles if ground is uneven as if they can find a way under it - they will exploit it. This year I'm trying something a little different, and using an electrified poultry net. I also put it up as soon as I got my seeds in the ground, so hopefully this also works out well. Neither of these two options will keep deer out. kzread.info/dash/bejne/em1mr9yroabRh5M.html
