I had it explained to me using the water/electricity analogy. Not perfect analogy but it gets the point across. Volts is pressure, Joules is volume during a certain amount of time. Basically, if you throw water out of container, the distance you can throw it is an analogy to voltage. Joules is the size of the container that you throw. Thimble, coffee cup, 5 gallon bucket, etc. You can throw them the same distance but whatever you are throwing at is going to get a much larger effect.

Over here (Australia) we measure a fences performance in Volt-amps (or Volt-ampers) or kVA (because it's in the thousands) which is different from just volts because it also measures current. But but Joules also include a dimension of time; So 1V x 1A for 1 second = 1 Joule - or so I gather.

I have a 2 joule for a horse that disrespected my fence after the last fence charger got fried by a storm. Got a new one ND 2 joule seems to do about 3000 feet no problem with some conductivity issues along the way. Goats however for some reason are too stupid to stop going through it

Well... A volt to a joule is like a horse to a sac of goods I mean a Volt: is a measurement of potential energy. As where as a Joule: is a measurement of work done by said potential energy. It's marketing. They shouldn't put that info on the front of the box.

Good question, I’m unsure if you can use a multimeter to check an electric fence. Multimeters are designed for 120/240 volts. Most fence energizers are making well over 5000 volts. Testing and electric fence with a multimeter may ruin your multimeter. 😊

How many volts or Jules do I need to keep a human out of my property 😅 I’m getting issues with tramps nicking my fish 😢
