TMAX Fever Returns During A Group Ride : Heat Shielding The Gas Tank Will Fix It? : Yamaha TMAX 500

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I attended a group ride on an 80 degree day... and the TMAX didn't like it.
It looks like a relapse of "TMAX Fever". Let's see if we can fix it.

If there is a return line to the fueltank i would try a radiator style cooling on that hahaha

Dude. You dont need the background music when you talk to the camera. The channel is more than good enought as it is, you dont need it. (And for some people its annoying, because it makes it hard to hear what you`re saying. Greetings from TMAX owner in Norway!:)

Sorry that you don't like it. I feel like it smooths out some transitions sometimes so it feels like a more polished product to me. Some people like it and some don't so it's really hard to try to make everyone happy. I edit in headphones and always try to make sure you can hear me well as it's supposed to be background music.

I would think an inline fuel cooler would also help, a few vehicles that i have worked on suffered from fuel fever this was always my solution. Sometimes just a coil off soft copper will do the trick

Your assembly/disassembly/maintenance videos of the T Max has about talked me out of ever wanting one. I ride a Helix, which is a piece of cake to work on should it ever need it, which it never does. So reliable it is. My brother has a 500 T Max, amazing scooter til it needs work.

I've never worked on a Burgman or any of it's competition to know if it's par for the course or poorly designed, but yeah. The vids tell the truth. I love the bike, but it could use some improvement in ease of access.

@@49ccscoot With a Helix, you remove the seat with one bolt and there’s the engine.

@@blipco5 There's not a lot to access via the seat bucket on the TMAX, but for the fuel pump they had 2 options to make it a quick job. The access panel could be a little larger and the pump could be changed or they could have made the seat come out easier like most scoots.

Great video as always Brent. Must have been super annoying/embarrassing having the big girl play up in front of you're buddys on smaller scoots. When my mk3 developed Tmax fever, it had been stood for an hour or so in full sun on a hot day during a day out at the seaside with my wife. The bike had ran fine on the way down, but was hesitant to start or idle. I was aware of Tmax fever from the forums back in the day, and videos by "Big Wleels Turning" on youtube. So i pushed it into some shade, and went off to find a petrol station to buy a container and some fuel ( the scoot had about a quarter of a tank at the time ). The cooler fuel seemed to do the trick on this occasion and we got home without issue. I promptly got a cheap no name replacement fuel pump off ebay, and i have never had the fever happen scince. I do feel though, that as i now have air filter/exhaust/ fuel controller mods ( and thoughts of a Malossi 560 kit with cams ) it might be a good idea to get a decent updated oem pump/assembly ( or a Polini pump ). I also removed the "banana" panel vent blanks as you did, but i couldn't really notice any difference, and was concerned about water ingress and potential electrical problems, so i put the blanks back in. Hopefully, with the work you have done, you never suffer the fever again. Happy Scootin.

Luckily those guys are cool. I mostly just felt bad holding up a couple of 150-200s with a 500. I'd love to try the 560 and cams. They're just so expensive. Very curious how much it really changes though.

@@49ccscoot please do if you have the money! I would love to see a build series on that as you are always showing it so detailed! Im thinking myself to get the stage 3 kit from Magistrati racing in italy, consisting of cams, bigger throttle bodies (37mm), and intake horns. They say the cams really free the power up, combined with the right tune! As with the 560 kit i hear that you have to check your oil a lot more as the cilinders are not as good as the Yamaha OEM ones (as expected) and sometimes small particles get in the oil. Keep up the good work!

I think the SMAX is such a cool smaller scoot... at least from afar having never been on one or worked on one. All reviews I've seen sound like they are very capable for their displacement.

@@49ccscoot I weigh 200 and it handles me perfect. I can double someone @150lbs easily. Top speed @ 72 mph with no headwind and climbs most hills with no problems. Very reliable with 10k miles so far. Great power to weight since it's the size of a 49cc while having 155cc.

I moved to Tulsa and cant find a decent scooter to ride back and forth to MD. My only option seems to be a Kymco AK. They dont do maxi scoots around here.

That's the closest thing I can find to a new model like the TMAX. The TMAX is sort of rare. I'm sure there were plenty of them in some areas, but I've never seen one like mine in person and I saw a 530 a couple of times locally years ago. They didn't sell well. Anyway, there are other nice big scoots. Honestly a Burgman or BMW C650GT may be better for that sort of riding. The TMAX and I assume the AK are more focused on being a performance scooter, but I think those are more comfort oriented and probably cruise slightly easier at high speeds.

Have you thought about trying to add a small 40mm computer fan to a little toggle switch? To move air over it when you're parked even a 120mm fan would just sip power. Noctua, make some IP67 industrial computer fans or even 5v ones as well. The gray ones they make you can't even hear them running and the industrial ones move a lot of air. I forget which ones. I think the regular brown ones come with low noise adapters so they run at certain RPMs without software.

It was a thought to have some sort of fans to move air, but I'm hoping the wrap will be effective.

Piaggio 250 had some issues with fuel pumps years ago, there was too tight tolerance, and pump would overheat and even stop from working.. Idk, if its possible to disassemble your tmax pump and check for faults, and maybe moding it somehow, or is it possible to fit pump from some different scooter.. maybe you could use your your assembly and replace just the pump.. I saw that the top performances have the pump.. btw, if its enough space, you could also place some thermal pad like from mineral wool :) Good luck man!! :)

Twice now. It seems to clear up with a new fuel pump assembly for me, but the last one didn't work long enough so I wanted to try to reduce heat in the tank as well this time.
