TM Krishna: Manodharma III - Part 4
Музыка
In the fourth and final segment of TM Krishna's popular Manodharma series, he demonstrates the concept of Tanam with a lovely interplay between Akkarai Subhalakshmi on violin and himself on vocals. He then goes on to discuss the role of literature/poetry as lyrical content in songs.
Krishna was also accompanied by Arunprakash Krishnan on mridangam and Chandrasekara Sharma on ghatam. Tanpura support was provided by Krishna's student Vignesh Krishnamurthy.

So beautifully put. Music transcends time and it can't be messured or restricted to time. Also, the fact that as a musician he is done with his beautiful rendition and can't replicate for another hr should be respected. As an audience you might have bought the ticket for 2 hrs but you got your elixir in one hr which may get diluted in the next hr with just the time killing compositions or what we call as tukdas... So go with the elixir to remain energised or mesmerised!
The greatness of Carnatic music is to TM Krishna's first point. We are human, not machines, not metronomes. Carnatic Music is the most nuanced version of Acapella (from a western music standpoint)
Krishna, I declare you the "King of Tanam" rendition

Superb. Thank you !!!
You did it again FEA. Just wonderful sessions these 4 part series. What next? Can we get some sessions like these in Hindustani music? Using TMK's term, we would love to understand music from either side of the vindhyas

Adarsh Datt Thanks. We would love to do similar sessions with Hindustani musicians. We are working on it.
dayArdrA is the word. dayA + ArdrA. It means filled with the moisture of compassion (dayA). That adds to the "cold" feeling.
Awesome !
When they raise their thala hand real high, you know that they are stretching the thalam :-)

Malavagowla (called Mayamalavagowla according to the melakartha nomenclature scheme)
On Poetry and Lyrics, TMK you could have elaborated upon the importance of the meaning of the words as it matters a lot to render the right Bhava. For musical effect, breaking of phrase or elongating shall render a different meaning though it might sounds mellifluous. Must be a balance. Hope you agree.
Oh boy, that tAnam *sigh*
The fundamental reasoning, you "accidentally" land upon, when you enquire into the system of ragas and their segregation as to being sung at a particular time of day is not as downtrodden as Krishna makes it seem. There is a much clearer understanding of that system and I believe one must not, without this complete understanding, senselessly banter on such a topic, especially one who claims to be the spearhead of a musical revolution, as it puts down the very ideology of liberalizing musical knowledge from the "high class" temple priests or the Mughal darbars to the "lowly" streets. - tat tat tat

Here is an excerpt of an interview with Prabha Atre, someone who is steeped in Khayal, on the prehar system of ragas: “Question: Your views on the time theory in North Indian classical music are controversial. Please elaborate. Prabha Atre’s Response: The time or rasa theory in ragas - I am not sure it applies to everyone. If you don’t know the theory, do you still feel sad if a raga is supposed to make you sad? It’s not necessary! Or take the time theory, not everyone feels a morning raga should only be sung in the morning. Everybody should feel the same but it’s not like that. So what I say is - there is good music and bad music. That’s it!” Please read the full interview: www.thehindu.com/entertainment/music/classical-music-has-to-change/article18699796.ece
