because führer is strongly linked to hitler, people in germany actually say the english word leader a lot. for example the leder of a volleyball team would actually be called teamleader like in english.

That still sounds problematic to people's ears in the same way that "aholocaust" sounds like "a holocaust," or silly rhyming nicknames like "Agolf Twittler" land with an audience. Germans, um... "retired" the word Wehrmacht after WWII. Retiring any fürher words would make sense in the same respect. And yes, I'm simply charming at parties... if only I were asked to attend one.
