TKS 80 SawStop by Festool in the UK - full demo of prototype system. Available in the UK soon(ish)!

This is an incredible piece of technology - a normally potentially very dangerous table-saw made safe through air-bag type tech that fires an explosive to immediately stop the blade upon detection of flesh!
SawStop by Festool - I recorded this video at the Weston Super Mare Festool roadshow event in June 2019. Presentation by Phil Beckley, Technical Trainer at Festool UK

The Bosch REAXX is a superior esign as it doesn't ruin the blade when the blade is forced to drop. Saw Stop technology is doing an injustice to many because of their patent litigation against Bosch in the US. The Saw Stop also requires a replacement of a very expensive mechanism in addition to a replacement blade whereas the Bosch merely needs a relatively inexpensive cartridge to be replaced.

Saw Stop cartridge is $79.00. Not exactly “very expensive”. Why would a company that has revolutionized table saw technology not protect its patent?

Bosch also gave you two deployments per cartridge.

Been on a festool forum on Facebook one person showed one finger cut off using the festool plunge saw on a fence rail. One person commented and said put a warning on photo not something I want to see while eating.

I do wish there will be a more permanent workshop version of this, but I doubt it. The creators of this technology Sawstop, don't sell their tablesaws outside of North America, a real pity because a lot of the mid-range table saws here in the UK are quite poor in quality.

If the Blade drops below the table in contact with a finger, why does it also need to stop the blade, thereby ruining the blade?

I think it's the action of the brake going into the blade which makes the blade drop down.

Hi Skinner Designs - like Anthony Shackman implies, it is one action - to simply lower the blade while it is still spinning, may result in dragging whatever it has got hold of down into the mechanism with it. The teeth are shaped to cut/grip material in a forward motion. Merely dropping the blade without instantly stopping it may well be far less effective a safety measure I'm guessing. But great question!

Theres now a better Technologie by austriam company Felder that use magnets that change magnetation fast to lower the blade. But its for big saws.

Never ever wear gloves or loose fitting long sleeves when using workshop power tools. Many an awful injury or death as a result of the user being pulled into the blade by the gloves or sleeves.
