Instructions for using Photoshop's Unsharp Mask with TK8 Edge Masks for HALO Control:
1. Make the stamp visible layer (or a duplicate layer if there is just a background layer).
2. Do the unsharp masking with the goal of over sharpening the image. View at 100% or 67% to do this evaluation. Start with 200/2/1, but if more sharpening is needed to look over sharpened try 300/3/1. If less, try 150/1.5/1. The goal is to at least slightly over sharpen the image with a little bit of halo visible.
3. Turn off the sharpened layer’s visibility.
4. Make an Edge mask.
5. Blur the edge mask 2 pixels.
6. Do a Maximum adjustment of the edge mask that matches the radius of Unsharp Mask.
7. Invert the Edge Mask.
8. Apply the Edge Mask to the sharpened layer.
9. Turn on the visibility of the sharpened layer back on.
10. Adjust mask density to make stronger sharpening or layer opacity for less sharpening.

Now I know how to use the Edge Mask tool! All our images receive some kind of pre-print sharpening. Sometimes the hyperfocal distance was not guessed properly and portions of our pet photos lost fur definition. We sharpen in Topaz Sharpen Ai but there are always halos. This TK8 tool is exactly what we need. Thanx Dave.

You’re welcome Sam. Sharpen Ai also does a good job with basic sharpening also. For those who don’t use it, this method will work well. Sean Bradshaw points out in his video in the TK8 Video guide, that if you do clarity adjustments with the high pass filter and you get halos this technique can help you get rid of them. Basically you can apply this technique to any layer that has induced halos into your image.

Having said that, I'm so glad I discovered your channel and when I saw the TK8 symbol it sparked my interest, and immediately subscribed. The first thing I do every Friday now when I open KZread is to check out TK Fridays. I do have a question though. Remember the last videos you made on the masking for success series? There was a portion in the first video of that series where you clicked the My Channels button and a mysterious channel appeared, and you mentioned that you were going to explain how to use it. I was wondering if that's in the works.

Hi Dave, I have been working with TK8 since it came out. It has been fabulous, the best TK ever. And your videos have only expanded its potential for me. Recently, I’ve been revisiting sky replacement since PS has new features to make it easier and TK8 even more so. I came to this video because I’ve found halo and fringe removal can be a major challenge. I’ve been reviewing lots of on line material about this. So, I wondered if edge masks might be useful. I don’t think so, but I could be wrong. Assuming I’m not incorrect and that edge masks won’t help halos and fringing, would you be interested in tackling an edit of a bare tree against a monochromatic sky using PS and TK8 for sky replacement that eliminates or at least minimizes fringes and halos? I suspect there are TK8 tools that could help with this process, but I haven’t put together a workflow that solves it. And, actually, I think there are probably different workflows that have to be used in different situations. Thank you, Mark R

Two questions: (1) what if I Open as a Smart Object in Photoshop? and (2) what if I only want to work on part of an image, or exclude (or have a lesser impact on) a distant background for better depth? Thanks for including the steps here, too. Very interesting!

Thanks. Sharpen Ai is really for images with focus problems. For instance, images that are out of focus because your camera lens was mis-adjusted or you used to slow of a shutter speed and lost focus due to camera movement. It uses Ai to correct these types of issues. It works really well for basic sharpening also. I point this method out because not everyone uses Sharpen Ai. There are different ways, other than the way I showed in this tutorial to sharpen images in Photoshop. If you use other methods and you get halos this technique will help in reducing them. It is really great because it targets the edges.

  • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly

It can be done. I would apply the Orton Effect to the entire image. Then apply the Edge Mask to the Orton Group like I did in the video. Next, make sure you are on the Orton Group layer and load your selection. Now with the CX or Combo Panel click on the Right side (white mask) of the create Group icon and it will put the Orton Group inside a new Group and apply a mask with your selection. The Orton effect will now be applied only to your selected area.

Hi Dave, thanks for answering so quickly. Really appreciate that. What I do is bring the photo into Photoshop, run DeNoise and Sharpen AI. Then duplicate the layer run the Edge Mask as you do in the Video using 2 pixels for the blur, maximise is a problem because I do not know what Sharpen AI uses. In my test I used 1 pixel. Invert the layer and if I leave the Sharpen AI layer activated there is no hiding of the halos. If I turn off the Sharpen AI layer the Edge Masking works but my sharpening is gone. In fact to see the effect of the Edge Masking I have to turn off all Smart Filters, (Topaz Filters) which defeats the object of the exercise.
