I love that line she said that she would rather Jack's Whore than Cal's wife and then she spits in his face and toward the end of the movie she changed her name to Rose Dawson b/c she didn't want Ruth and Cal to find her and she managed to live her life and she made her promise to Jack and Cal and Ruth treated Rose like an object and Jack Dawson like a person with feel feelings and you cheer for Rose b/c she lived her life and she kept her promise to Jack. Titanic will always be a movie you can watch over and over again... I went to The Titanic Exbhit in DC it was cool to see the Titanic come to life. I felt like I was on the actual ship.

The tragic reality is that the *real* "Rose" (a white French woman named Juliette Laroche) actually *was* considered a "whore" at the time for the "crime" of marrying *a black man* (a rich Haitian man with a degree in engineering named Joseph Laroche) and having two biracial children (keep in mind the Titanic set sail in *1912,* and their kids were already 4 and 2 by then! They got married in pre-1910 France! Not sure about France's laws, but here in the US, segregation was still in place in most of the nation until post-1950)! And as you can probably guess, Joseph was "split" into the characters of Jack and Cal, with Cal given a bunch of godawful traits that Joseph never had!Joseph was not abusive, he actually *did* save her and their kids' lives, and his final act for his wife and kids was to *purposefully* put all the money and jewelry he had in his coat pockets and then *purposefully* put his coat on his wife moments before the lifeboat she was on was lowered - and yes, *this* was how he saved their lives! They were refusing to leave without him, so he lied and told them he'd made a deal with the guards and paid them off to get on a lifeboat, when he obviously had done no such thing and actually intended to give all his money to her and the kids! Anyway, the point is... I can't help but laugh *and cringe* at this line knowing the *actual* story! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Like, now that you know Jack/Cal are actually *the same person* in real life, this line is impossible not to laugh at!
@mazdakmina9493

Oh, and of course, Juliette Laroche was the name she took from her husband (she was Juliette Lafarge before). And yes, even after her husband died, she kept his name and remained Juliette Laroche for the rest of her life - she never remarried! When her first son was born (their kids were both daughters, and yes, she was actually *pregnant* with Joseph's third child *while* on the boat), she named him Joseph! 😭😭😭 Remember that name! Laroche! Juliette *Laroche!* And the movie tried to make you *forget* it, but now you know there *was* a man named Joseph Laroche, and that he saved his pregnant wife and his two biracial daughters! I can't even share his picture (on this comment)!

This is actually truly messed up by the writers once you hear the true story of the *real* "Rose" (a French woman named Juliette Laroche)! Simply put, the *real* "Rose's" mother had been *dead* for many years before she set foot on the Titanic, and her father never remarried! 😭😭😭 To make matters worse, when Juliette, her *husband* (Laroche was her husband's last name which she took, her maiden name and her father's last name were Lafargue) - a *black* Haitian man named Joseph - and their two *biracial* daughters boarded the boat to go back to Haiti (because despite Joseph having earned a degree in engineering from the University of Paris, employers were refusing to hire him/firing him, and they decided to return to Haiti - *that* was why they were on the boat), Juliette genuinely thought she would never see her father again and wrote him multiple heartbroken letters *from the ship!* 😭😭😭 And oh, her father actually *supported* her marriage and even helped raise his biracial granddaughters and *grandson* (yes, she was *pregnant* with Joseph's third child when on the Titanic) after the disaster (Juliette returned to France after the death of her husband on the Titanic), but she kept his last name and even named her newborn son *Joseph!* 😭😭😭😭 And oh, like her father, she never remarried! 😭😭😭 So yes, after learning the real story, this line feels *especially* messed up and wrong! 🤬🤬🤬 I can only imagine how Juliette's daughter Louise, who was still alive at the age of 87 when this movie came out, felt upon hearing the character based on her mom say this to her fictional "grandma" who never met because her actual grandmother died before she or any of her siblings were ever born. 😖😖😖

Rose wasn't sure if Jack was indeed the culprit. I mean one cannot forget the fact that she was still young and naive. The series of events after Jack was framed as a thief caught her off guard plus the sinking of the ship made it difficult for her to process everything. Coming to Cal's comment. When Cal made the remark, she had an epiphany. She remember it was she who kept the drawing, the note and the Heart of the Ocean in the locker for Cal to see and burn. So if Cal had seen the drawing (and the note) then if must be him who set up Jack and got him arrested. That's why she called him a "b*stard" and spat on his face.

You’re looking at this from a non-rich person’s perspective. We dream of opulence and luxury and scoff at the idea of sleeping in a shack or under a bridge with nothing but “air in my lungs and few blank sheets of paper”, but for someone with money, life is very different. It’s about appearance and schedules and who you associate with. Jack and fellow 3rd class passengers had no schedule; they didn’t dislike anyone unlike how the Countess and Ruth did with Molly. And no poor woman had to be forcibly married so that the mother could keep living a life of luxury or escorted/guarded 24/7 by an overbearing fiance. So Rose would have gladly given up all that and slept under a bridge if it meant that she was able to do as she pleased and not what she was told to do or expected to do.

The odds are, had Jack survived, they would have been dirt poor in NYC in 1912. Not an easy life. Jack, who is shown to be a gambler (winning his Titanic ticket in a poker game), may have likely gambled away whatever pennies he earned selling his art, or spent it on booze, while Rose worked 14 hour days doing manual labor. Given that she was young and attractive, she likely also would have resorted to prostitution to make ends meet. There was no welfare, no food stamps, no government assistance, no public housing -- if you were in poverty back then with no marketable skills, your existence was pretty bleak. The historical reality of their circumstances probably wouldn't be all that beautiful. If this was 2023, Rose probably would have gotten fed up with her broke-ass boyfriend pretty quickly.

This is such a crucial moment for Rose because it’s the first time she realizes the depth of Cal and Ruth’s cruelty. Prior, she was still always miserable around them, but all she knew for sure was her life was incompatible with theirs. She wanted to escape them because she knew that she subjectively could get no joy from them, not because she actually thought they were bad people. It’s when the ship starts sinking that she truly realizes that they are evil. It’s not just her; they treat everyone this way, to the point where they don’t care about loss of life. Having a difficult personal relationship is one thing, but realizing that someone in your life is this indifferent to human suffering is another thing entirely.

As soon as Rose left Ruth, that was the very moment she decided to take control of her own life and decide her own destiny for herself.
“I’d rather be his whore than your wife” greatest response by rose
This moment and entire scene altogether is also reminder of what a great actress Kate Winslet was at the time, already at age 21. Not to forget, a reminder of her beauty. Although she was using dye, the red hair was amazing on her.
Rose realize here that Cal never love her, when Cal said he regret not keeping the drawing, it would worth a lot more by morning. Cal plan to make profit of the drawing .... maybe selling it or something, this is when Rose realize he never value her. I mean you don't sell naked picture of your wife to be.
Ruth never cares about her daughter only for the money to survive of the lifestyle after her husband's passing leaving her and Rose nothing but the clothes on their back, facing of getting shunned out of society of the wealth that she ended up pleading towards her friends for the arranged marriage for Rose to marry for wealth and so Cal's parents offer her in this situation to have the wealth back for Rose to marry Cal for the union of wealth and status.

@@thomasbrennan6303 To be fair, Jack Dawson did work his way through places. But his biggest problem was that he never had a set plan for his life. The film makes it seem as though this is the ideal, but as I have grown older, I prefer Cal's philosophy: "A real man makes his own luck."

@@Musicienne-DAB1995 Jack wasn’t a man, he was a boy. His dreamy “take life as it comes” approach to life is exciting to girls. However, grown women don’t find this exciting. It’s a massive turn off. Women want stability and security. Had Rose grown into a woman with Jack, she would have undoubtedly modified her attitude about him. Teen love rarely becomes a fairy tale, and women fall out of love much more easily than men.
I wonder if Molly helped Ruth after the shipwreck; when Ruth faced other disasters.
Before anyone feels bad for Rose’s mother Ruth, you should know she left Trudy on the ship. Trudy was the woman who’s dress flys up the back as she slides down the deck as the ship starts going vertical. Trudy absolutely could have gotten into a lifeboat if Ruth had allowed her.
