I have always said, we need to have more models with a touch of CGI. Not the other way around. Today we rely on way too much CGI.

Absolutely agree. I Actually rewatched True Lies, and the practical effects and miniatures were far superior to effects today. I’m so glad Titanic was made in 97..if it were made today it would be probably all CGI and no sets of practical effects

It isn't even that we rely too much on CGI. CGI has the potential to look amazing, nigh-photorealistic. But companies wanna skimp. They cheap out everywhere they can and we just wind up with shitty CGI that isn't fooling anybody and the excuse is "it's the style"

It's cheaper. They want it to be the cheapest as possible. I think I will just start rewatching all the Golden age movies. But there's hope.

We don't need models anymore. Perhaps, just for one shot of 2. And I'm not talking about today's 99% Hollywood films that use CGI in the worst ways. I'm talking about that Canadian filmmaker.

I must have seen Titanic at least 15 times and wasn’t aware that they had so many miniatures. I thought it was mainly digital effects. Amazing models. Especially the wreck on the ocean floor. Breathtaking!

Well make one that 1 or 2 ppl sitting in tandem can actually pilot, could use troll motors for power, did you know nothing but wires run down the shaft of one therefore you could shorten the shaft or use the motor & propeller as a modular unit, mounting it anywhere💡building a model is one thing but building a replica that you can actually sit in and control, would be the ultimate build, I mean if your willing to build a ship that just sits there on a stand for onlookers, your missing one important element and that's water, without it is like a bird without wings! I've always wanted to build this its been a dream of mine ever since Jack & rose made Titanic a household name again, but I lack the room of a garage to build it in, otherwise I would have already started, "hell" I would have been done by now! anyway folks my ship of dreams may just be that for me, but anyone else inspired by my foresight please indulge as I would love to see this dream become reality for someone, if not myself. Some of my research gave me these finding a one person vessel would need to be @ 3'x18ft long 2 ppl would need to be @ 3.5x22ft long with a total ballist wt of 1250/1500 lbs that's including the wt of the ppl inside and all the components within the hull. Special chambers could also be built & filled with sand or stones to add more ballist if needed. 😜👍

I'm sure it's in a museum somewhere because james Cameron borrowed it back for the 3d re release of titanic in 2012 to add 3d depth to the shots of the ship in the movie and also both models were present on his titanic the final word documentary on nat geo.

I'm not an expert so I can only go by what little I actually know, but in my mind CGI is a tool just like a wrench or a hammer. The problem is as I see it in a lot of big budget films they grab the hammer without considering if it will be useful to the task at hand. Sure are there things only a hammer can do? Absolutely, does that mean that the rest of the tool-kit is obselete and the hammer can magically do everything? Absolutely NOT. A good example that comes to mind is the Live Action Lion King, the effects in of themselves were neat, but they ABSOLUTELY did not help the film in any way. On the other hand, TITANIC used a wide variety of tools and that's why it succeeded despite it's bloated budgetary issues.
