Titanic Basics: Terminology

Ойындар

"Titanic Basics" is a short series we will be making sporadically, giving a lesson on a category of Titanic's story. In this episode, we tackle terminology. Some of them are basic, and some of them are a bit more advanced.
Terms discussed:
Hull, Keel, Bow, Stern, Starboard, Port, Larboard, Forecastle, Well Deck, Mast, Crow's Nest, Bridge, Helm, Poop Deck, Funnel and Smoke Stack, Tender, Sister Ship, Ocean Liner, Cruise Ship, Scotland Road, Mess Hall, Shaft Alley, and Glory Hole.

Spencer Kent The reason they keep saying that Titanic is a cruise ship (Or at least in my mind) is because Cruise ships are the most popular form of sea travel while the Ocean Liner has almost gone extinct. Or they call it a boat which is Farrr worse than calling it a cruise ship.

Infact yeah made this before they said that, and yeah like I said Cilla grew up there, was great friends with Ringo Starr The Beatles drummer.

I think it had to do with the fact that they where very heavy and when they touched the water line, the ship had already a 6-10 degree list toward the bow. also, the would have been really hot so that when the water touched them they we flash cooled, buckling the steel and weakening the structure. To be clear I'm not an expert on this subject that's just what I think happened.

Think of it this way: there's "structure", or the hull, then there's the "super structure" (yes I know it's one word, but I split it to make the point), where "super" is used in the sense of "above, on top of, or beyond". The hull is topped by the main deck, forming a 'box' of sorts. Everything put on top of that box is the surperstructure. Cheers

Speaking of terminologies, in aviation, the news media uses the word "tarmac" all the time and all aviation staffs, experts and even enthusiast cringe at this term because it doesn't exist. They usually uses it when the plane is on the "ground" (which this should be the more preferable term for the general audience who had no idea about the term and think it sounds sophisticated, but is not...) in the airport. Last time I've checked the roads of the airport are called the runway (the long "tarmac" that planes uses when taking off or land), the taxiway (the series "tarmac" of roads that leads pathways to and from the runway and the gate/jet gangway) and the apron (the "tarmac" where planes park). And another thing, they don't use this kind of material for roads on airports, they are made of concrete to support the weight of heavy planes. I know this is out place but what the hey!

  • @eddievhfan1984

    @eddievhfan1984

Tarmac is an alternative trade name for asphalt, which may explain why it's popular as a term for runways. Also, smaller airports may indeed use asphalt for their runways, as it'd be cheaper to put in and maintain-concrete runways are more involved in terms of laying down and repairing.

  • @BornToPun7541

This is great content and exactly what I was looking for after all of my binge watching steam liner historiography. Do you have a video on the novel written in the later 1800s about a steamer that sank referred to as the Titan? This correlation story is unbelievable and I know a story here needs to be discussed that isn't sensationalized in any way. Your team is the most respectful and dignified I've come across, when talking about these tragic losses we associate with Titanic. Thank you and keep up the good work!

When that is said, we´re on the verge of a new era in computer tech with higher resolutions and real time ray tracing rendering capabilities. Is this something that you guys are going to implement in the final version? My suggestion is that you really consider the possibilities of RT.. With that amount of work and detailing you guys have put into it, it would be amazing to have another layer of texture and air particles to the final product.... Ray tracing or not.. IIRC, the ship's whistle was powered by steam from the propulsion circuit (or maybe there was a ship's service steam line for non-propulsion-related duties? IDK), and if so, it would presumably be a valve controlled by an electric relay; could be as simple as a button pressed on the bridge.

A very great video! However I noticed something. From what we have seen of your 3D-built Scotland Road I can't help but think that it's missing the typical sheer (the characteristic curvature of the upper decks) of old ships from that time. Now, I don't know how noticeable the sheer was on Titanic's lower decks or on Scotland Road, but I always thought on a ship of this size it should be noticeable. The Wikipedia-entry to the "sheer" also has a nice picture of one of Queen Mary's long corridors that imply what I'm talking about. Then again, I don't know how this looked on Titanic, I might be completely wrong here. Other than that keep up the fantastic work. :)

There is sheer represented on the T-H&G Scotland Road, but I believe this was faked in just this hallway because of the astronomical labor it would take to account for an unnoticeable sheer in every room. The Queen Mary had more sheer than Titanic, that's why it looks more obvious. Titanic would have more sheer in the lower decks, but this is only seen at distance.

Did I see that the middle propeller has 3 blades? I have read some articles and documents from H&W shipyard about Titanic middle propeller with 3 blades, but I'm still bit uncertain. Can you make some video about middle propeller?

LukZombi more than likely 3-bladed center prop, though unproven and likely always will be, there was a piece of information uncovered in 2010-11 that revealed thrust output and hydrodynamic differentials from each propeller on Titanic, and what was intriguing is that the center prop had identical characteristics as the outboard props, showing the same statistics as the prop with 3-blades, which is a bit different than a prop with 4-blades as Olympic and Britannic had. Which leads experts to now believe Titanic most likely had a 3-bladed center-prop.

The discovery of the documentation pre dates 2010-11. I first ran across it in 2007. See: www.markchirnside.co.uk/TitanicThreeBladedCentrePropeller.html

The center prop was driven by a different engine at a slower speed, so was bigger. This engine used waste steam from the main two engines and turned it into power.

That's not the case, @@nickbreen287 . The centre propeller turned faster than the port and starboard propellers (the ratio was about 2.2:1 revolutions). It was also smaller. Harland & Wolff's records show Titanic's centre propeller had a diameter of 17 feet, whereas the port and starboard propeller diameters were 23 feet 6 inches.

Hi THG, well, yesterday my THG 2019 calendar arrived, and on Saturday, I contributed $50. But I wanted to tell you that on the calendar, there was sadly a typo. On January 13, it said, " Lone Survivor" Episode of NIght Gallery Airs (1969). Isn't NIght supposed to be Night? Just asking

Why did they change the boiler function from coal to oil after World War 1 on both the Olympic and the Aquitania I believe. Was it because it was cheaper to use and required less crew?

Booze cruises. In the UK you were a bona fide traveller if you travelled more than three miles and you could get a drink in a hotel whereas locals had to observe statutory opening hours. Ships were great for these, particularly on a Sunday when the pubs were shut and as they were governed by maritime regulations anyway, the travelling drinker was doubly fortunate. The crew only, and still only as far as I know, had to close the bar when they tied up at each pier as they were in port and thus not at sea, and not going anywhere.
