Titane was one of the most fucked up wholesome things I've ever seen.

Young, sad and in pain would be a good bandname for a melancholic very emotional or punkband. Its weird how the director never thought it could fall into a transgender category, especially as transpeople often love body horror appearently because body horror.

I have Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, have had it since I was 3. Your description of your pain, living with it, and adapting at the beginning of this video hit home. Physical pain is defining, but also forces you to get creative, adapt, and, well, know your body in a way otherwise seemingly impossible. My body is changing, but not just in the normal way. I’m getting more and more disabled. The damage just keeps slowly spreading. My body scares me because it represents my future. Body horror exists at every step of life. I wish as artists, we could acknowledge our everyday relationship with our bodies as complicated, ambiguous, and ever-changing. Body image goes beyond beauty standards, but also what we can rely on to be independent people. We spend as much time with our bodies as we do with our thoughts. Sometimes, I just want a break from both.

I watched this movie in theaters and my visceral reaction of disgust and surprise and so many other emotions throughout made it a great experience. I eagerly searched for reviews online from my favorite reviewers and there were none! But in the last week I've seen 2! (Yours included) I guess we all needed some time to process haha As an aside, I was 1 of 5 people total in the theater and 3 people walked out. I don't judge them for it, but it's the 1st time I've ever seen that happen personally and I wonder if, as you said, a line was crossed for them that made the characters irredeemable. An art piece, for sure, whose interpretation and meaning will be different from viewer to viewer. Thank you for the review 🙏

I didn't see it as early as I had wanted to! Was kinda hoping to really hit that initial zeitgeist but I missed it. Ah well. I think there was a walkout or two in my screening as well; it's a thing I see from time to time (I actually think a couple of prior walked out of my Halloween Kills screening on Friday), but it's always interesting to see. Glad you enjoyed it!

Just watched this film tonight. I found myself kind of rolling my eyes at the beginning and then becoming more enraptured as it switched up further into the runtime. As someone who’s non-binary who’s trying to find how to switch up their presentation to the public I found the gender aspects inspiring until the very end where I felt they were kind of nullified. I thought the director was going for much more of a transitional, fluid character development than they were actually going for. But the relationship between the main character and her chosen father really hit home for me. As someone who has lost a father who was loving but essentially engineered his own death it was an incredibly tender and loving portrayal despite the atrocities committed by the protagonist at the beginning (which I almost wish were less overt as to not detract from the humanization of her incredible performance). It’s a very complicated, messy, forward-thinking film that I honestly can’t fault for it’s ambitions. As much as there’s stuff that I would tweak from my own personal view, I can’t think of a more visceral or compassionate film experience I’ve had this year.

This is the best review I’ve read/seen of Titane. Watched on Halloween. Not great Halloween movie. I’m still not convinced Titane has much to say about anything but at least it was weird. 👽

I didn’t find any trans reference disparaging, simply a commentary on changing one’s self to deal with impossible situations. And I felt the gut punch of an emotional and physical catharsis by the end. 10/10

sometimes I feel like some of these "art" movies don't work for me because they're asking questions that other media has prompted me to answer for myself, but to me the more "artsy" the movie the more likely it is to come at you with a bad faith argument to "make you question things". But often, my watching bredth probably isn't enough to make this generalization, they introduce elements that are almost the equivilant of "what if all computer processing was on renewables would you like crypto then" and I come away being like "interesting question with no basis in current reality. maybe I'll get back to you in my lifetime, maybe not."

Yeah, that's totally valid, though I think the current transhumanism movement makes questions about humanity in Titane more directly relevant today than, say, Tetsuo in 1988. Ultimately it's all philosophical as opposed to meaningfully applicable, and sometimes philosophical questions are interesting and sometimes they're not

I hate my body too sometimes. I have a disability and I hate ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.’ No it’s just pain and limiting things. The system isn’t great for people like me. I’m a transhumanist, I believe that human meat isn’t the end all be all. To be an other being isn’t something that scares me. I like transformation.

While I can certainly empathize with anybody who may have found parts of the film's exploration of gender politics troubling on a personal, gut-reaction level, I have to say as a non-binary person I found myself rather compelled by that aspect of the film. It's hard to fully put into words, especially since transness is not a one size fits all journey, as evidenced by how some trans people only feel fully secure and fulfilled in their gender identity after surgeries and hormonal treatments, while others seem to find contentment without any sort of physical change in their presentation whatsoever. I do feel though that Ducournau in no way intended to make a film with TERF-y ideology or wished to portray trans people as deceivers. Instead, I view the film through the lens of how often my own transition has been a painful and confusing experience, where each epiphany about myself led to further questions and uncertainties about my body, my mind, and my relationship to concepts of femininity and masculinity, among other things. It's a film that evokes the deep uncertainty if there even is a "true" self to be found in the ways I am perceived by others, if I exist as who I am because I truly feel that way about myself, or because others have taken the liberty to impose a name and a gender and an identity upon me merely by perceiving me within the lens of social hierarchies. In that sense, the ending resonates with me as a painful metamorphosis of the destruction of the body that had become less and less Alexia's as she aged and grew in the world, no matter how she attempted to shape and mold herself. Ultimately the only way to achieve self-actualization is to abandon any and all concepts of her previous self (or selves, depending how you wanna read it), and to achieve a new form of existence that seems to defy the rational, oppressive binary world. Lovely review as always, and Happy New Year!! Stay safe out there!
