Titan sub disaster: What is the future of deep-sea exploration?
Canadian vessels are returning home after searching for the Titan submersible off the coast of Newfoundland. All five crew members perished at sea, after what the U.S. coast guard calls a “catastrophic implosion.”
A debris field was discovered on the ocean floor near the Titanic wreck, and investigations are now underway. There are now new questions around the vessel's structural engineering.
Oceanographer David Gallo hopes there are answers that lead to safer vehicles, with this disaster being the first implosion of a submersible with passengers on board. He says it's something the community has feared - but expected.
Global’s Mike Armstrong reports.

The CEO’s arrogance and the loophole of diving in international waters without standards in witch he counted on killed them all . They say not to speak ill of the dead but he was at the core of this travesty and now anyone who went along with this will face many questions as people will want a scapegoat and someone too blame since the leader is gone .

The lesson here being that if you cut corners, people die. This is not a new lesson. Most safety regulations are in place because someone got hurt or died. The policy against loose clothing or jewellery while operating the drill press? That's because someone's fingers were ripped off. The lock-out tag-out procedure for equipment maintenance? That's because someone pressed the power button while the mechanic was still inside the thing, trying to fix it. The only silver lining here is that the person who was directly responsible for the submarine being a deathtrap was inside it when it went off.

@Jake-oq2bq Are you suggesting that only the wisdom of an old, specifically white, man could have prevented the sub implosion? Because if so I would like to hear your reasoning. Thus far I had been under the impression that the CEO just had complete contempt for safety regs in general, but if you have another explanationt hat makes sense, I am all ears.

I do feel bad for the kid as well. But there's no real way to escape a submarine without surfacing. The pressure locks you in. The sub was pretty badly designed, as I understand it. Lots of things on the outside that could catch on things, thinner hull than it ought to have had, window not rated for the depths it was aimed at. Basically, they cut every corner to save money and that had the result it usually has.

The masses take the advice of 'experts,' and bow to the dictates of their marionette leaders who together scare them into lining up for endless 'safe n effective' boosters. Billionaires have unique, foolhardy and expensive ways to end themselves. All the same in the final analysis. Rich or otherwise the majority are not too bright.....
Sorry, you mean "What is the future of deep-sea tourism?"
It’s not an experimental vessel. It is a vehicle for hire since it had paying passengers. How many aircraft manufacturers allow paid passengers on experimental test flights - none. Experimental vehicles are used to evaluate the performance of materials and systems under stress in a controlled environment.

@@gmw3083 stress testing establishes operational limits. I don't think anyone knew what the limits of the Titan sub were. Also engineering safety standards would not permit operation at the limits but significantly below the limits. Deep sea diving like all activities has risks. The concerns here are not to remove the risks associated with deep diving but rather to reduce the risks associated with a faulty vehicle. James Cameron experienced the exact same risks associated with deep diving as did the Titan occupants - the difference lies solely in the integrity of the two submersibles.

If the victims weren’t billionaires the media wouldn’t care. The real tragedy is the fact that rich people get more sympathy than common people
From what I understand the shape of the hull was a big factor. It's like Elon Musk making his rockets pointy for a meme even though it ended in paying civilian casulties
incompetency motivated by greed. it's that simple. my heart goes out to the victims and their families/friends. :(
Most subs that can dive that far are qualified for research purposes, not tourism
I would say the industry is imploding...
This wasn't "exploration" it was "tourism". I find the idea of diving on wrecks quite ghoulish. The Titantic sunk with over 1500 lives lost. It's a tomb. Let it alone.
Hopefully one conducted by experts lol
James Cameron got a nice story for making a new movie
I don't think that we need any new kinds of safety regs for manned subs. Like, all this tells us is that cutting corners when you're going in to a hostile environment that allows no second chances can make you dead. And that's not a new lesson.
Is this all to detract ppl from exploring the ocean? 🤔

This is perfect! There are 3 people I would like to buy tickets for as well, between you and I pooling together that’s a crew of 5 let’s send them together. Sure it would be a blast for them!
Isn't it strange that there was a book written in 1898, 11 years before Titanic was even designed, called Futility that was about the then largest and most technologically advanced olympic-class ocean liner ever built sailing cross the Atlantic avoid striking and iceberg on a moonless night and killing both the rich and the poor on board the vessel? The name of the liner in the book? The Titan. Then just to add another observation I made, the Titan, according to the United States Navy, was most likely lost on June 18th. The name of the company that manufactured the Titan is called OceanGate Fifty one years before on June 17th 1972 Watergate occurred which was a massive government cover-up of a scandal at the White House leading to the impeachment and resignation of Ben President Richard Nixon. Now you can take this with a grain of salt or you can tell me to put on my tinfoil hat. But I have been researching this rabbit hole for a long time and THIS was not only a cover-up of something far more sinister. It was also a ritual sacrifice of five souls.
Majority of the people watching and commenting can’t even afford it
The Titan submersible has proven to be a tragedy. Prayers and thoughts to the victims. 😢🙏

My inner cynic knows there is only one answer: Whatever's on the other channel we might have been watching instead.
There have been rumors of the titanic being cursed... Could that also be a factor? Regardless there should have definitely been more restrictions involved. The mistake was no accident. Just arrogance like Captain Edward John Smith: the Captain of the titanic. Have they not learned from their mistakes? Those who have forgotten are doomed to repeat.
Lol what's the future?? How about not go diving with only 2 professionals, using an analog Playstation controller in what looks like a hoodini coffin, to explore wrecks at beyond dangerous depths?
If you’re a millionaire or billionaire… listen to the experts and don’t cut corners.
😢
Get better CEO and build you subs better
The future is to not do what these people did. Learn from the mistakes of the past to make a better future. Or in this case a submarine that isn't operated by an Xbox controller.
More money than brains
The future is with... following regulations. Safety regulations exist for a reason; they were written in blood. It was just a goddamn cheapskate billionaire and he paid the ultimate price for his hubris.

Lol this is like watching Musk blow up soviet era rockets and thinking "wow it's so hard to get to space".... when saturn 7 rockets have been DESTROYING Elon's 50 year old failures. James Cameron has been to the titanic SEVERAL times without a problem, he built the sub to withstand 3 times the pressure and had redundancies for every system. "There are no small mistakes at that depth" -James Cameron.
